Feral Wolf
Chapter 21

Brontes

“So you and Alpha Czar are mates?” Achilles asked as he trailed behind me.

After Mathias and his family were directed into the pack house, Calliope had left me alone to go see the rogue she had captured in the dungeon. Achilles came looking for me because he wanted to introduce me to his friends. I wanted to go with Calliope but she told me it was fine and for me to follow Achilles.

“Yes, she’s my mate.” I answered and my heart was filling up with pride. For the time I had known her, she had ruled as Alpha with fairness and love. She was like no other female. To say I was infatuated with her was an understatement. Deep inside of me, I could feel it. I was madly in love with her.

“She seems nice.” Achilles whispered softly as he and I neared his group of friends.

“Of course she is. Have you seen her hurt or be cruel to anyone here?” I asked.

Achilles immediately shook his head, “But she can be scary.”

I chuckled, “Yes, she can be.”

“Are you afraid of her?” Achilles asked, as he looked up at me with his curious blue eyes.

“Of course I am. She’s an Alpha and the fiercest female I have ever seen but I know she won’t hurt me.” I replied confidently. I thought about her soft lips and the feel of her against me. It’s a wonder how someone that dainty became something so elegant as she was. She never failed to amaze me.

“You know, my real dad was an Alpha too.” Achilles said quietly and instantly my eyebrows furrowed.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“I am like you too, Brontes. I was taken when I was a little baby. Alpha Czar killed the dad that took me away. He always told me so, said I was an Alpha’s bastard.” Achilles continued further. I crouched to his level and was about to ask him when I heard shouting over the hill on the opposite end of where the kids were playing. I squeezed Achilles’s shoulders.

“Achilles, you need to take the children back to the pack house. Can I trust you to do that?” I asked.

He nodded. “I can do it, Brontes. You can count on me.”

Achilles ran to his friends and began shouting at them to head back into the pack house. When I saw that they were well on their way I broke into a run. I don’t know what was happening but inside of me my guts were churning and my heart was rapidly beating against my chest. I needed to go where the shouting was.

When I got there, what I saw scared the hell out of me and enraged me on so many levels. I felt my vision blurring and a roar escaped my chest. Calliope was being carried out from the dungeon, bleeding badly. Her back had claw marks on it, her throat had a slash mark across it and her eyes were closed.

Everyone stopped when they heard my roar. Before I knew it I was by her side, cradling her to me, snarling at everyone that came close. I wanted to protect her from harm and my wolf did not like anyone near us. The fear of losing her was driving us to become more feral and protective of our mate.

“Alpha Brontes, you have to let her go.” A familiar voice broke through my growling. I snapped my jaw at someone I thought looked familiar to me.

“Alpha Brontes, if you don’t let her go, she is going to bleed to death. We need to save her.”

“Stay away.” I snarled again.

“Listen to me! You need to let her go! She will die! You can’t let her die! You have to let her go!” Another voice commanded and my head whipped to look at the person who was ordering me. A male whom I recognized slowly as being my mate’s father slowly walked up to me. His hands were up in the air and his head was tilted to the side to show submission. I growled lowly again but he continued walking towards me.

“Who hurt her?” I growled.

“The rogue in the dungeon.” Isis’s voice broke to my left. My fury had an outlet. My eyes began seeking out the one who hurt our mate.

“Let her go.” I felt Calliope’s father’s hand on mine. “I will take care of her. You can trust me.”

“Save her.” I gritted out.

“Yes, I will save her.” He answered immediately.

I felt my arms start to relax enough for her father to take her out of my arms. I looked at them as they ran up the hill and to the pack house. A roar escaped my lips and I sniffed the air until my nose caught the scent of what I was hunting. My skin prickled with hair and I began shifting, my clothes shredding as I shifted to my wolf. My anger clouded my conscience and all I wanted was blood. The image of Calliope was clear in our mind as my wolf refused to let me not see it. He wanted blood as much as I did.

Jumping into a full run I ran toward the smell. When I got to the cell, the rogue was struggling and snarling against pack warriors who were trying to hold him down. When they saw me they immediately let go. I slowly entered the dungeon, my eyes on my prey.

When the rogue saw me his eyes widened in surprise and fear. I growled and my jaw snapped around his neck as I dragged him out the dungeon and to the field. Everyone stood in a circle and watched me as I circled what I was going to kill.

“She deserved it!” The rogue snarled.

“Thomas!” Mathias shouted. “Why would you do that?”

“The hunters said they will spare-”

“Alpha Czar came to release you so she could protect you!” Mathias roared. “You have done enough. Now, you will have to reap what you sowed.”

The rogue turned to look at me. His eyes were wide with fear and regret. The rage flowing through my veins refused to allow me to feel any remorse for him. Instead, I only saw blood. My wolf snarled and we lunged for the kill. My jaws snapped around his neck as I growled, saliva dripping from my mouth as I held on tight and the taste of my kill was close. I twisted the rogue’s neck in front of his father who looked sad and broken but his eyes told me he knew it was inevitable.

I dropped the dead body on the ground and slowly my wolf began pushing to the back of my mind, the image of Calliope slowly fading. Calliope. I needed to see her. I was able to shift back and when I was in my human skin again I broke into a run into the pack house to my mate.
