Chapter 8
After Nadia finished saying those words, she stood up and pulled her grandmother’s covers up.
She had thought that her grandmother had fallen asleep, but unexpectedly, her grandmother opened her wrinkled eyes slowly.
And she asked. “Nadia, is what you just said true?”
Her breath was weak and it took all her strength to ask the question.
Not wanting her grandmother to worry about her, Nadia nodded and said, “Grandma, don’t worry. He’s very kind. You must take good care of yourself. When he has time, I’ll bring him over to see you.”
Nadia’s grandmother knew that Nadia had a boyfriend, but she had never met him.
Even if it switched from Jim to James, her grandmother would not be able to notice.
Nadia continued, “He’s nice to me. He’s from the city. He has a car and a house, and he has a pretty good job with a salary of several thousand dollars a month. And he’s good–looking.”
She tried to put James in a positive light.
Although his car was just a broken, old Chevrolet Sail, with an unkempt courtyard of a house that Nadia didn’t know how many years he had lived in, despite how his new house looked well decorated, James didn’t tell her if the house was really his. Maybe he rented it.
However, one thing she said was true, that James was indeed handsome.
She didn’t have much hope for her marriage. After all, they had only known each other for less. than a few hours before they went to get their marriage license.
If it wasn’t for the cost of her grandmother’s surgery, she wouldn’t have gone to get the marriage license,
After hearing Nadia’s words, a long–lost smile appeared on her grandmother’s face.
“It’s okay. As long as he treats you well.” Nadia’s grandmother took Nadia’s hand, gently patting the back of her hand.
She then continued. “I know my own body. This hospital costs a lot of money a day, right? I’d better go back home! I don’t want to bother your sister either.”
With that, she was about to get up from the bed and pull out the infusion device on the back of her hand.
Nadia hurriedly pressed her grandmother’s hand. “Grandma, you have to be hospitalized now. We have to listen to the doctor. Besides, if you go back home, who will take care of you?”
Nadia knew that her grandmother wanted to be discharged from the hospital just because she was afraid of spending her and Elena’s money. Nadia’s two uncles and aunt didn’t care about their mother, and her grandmother was afraid of becoming a burden on her and Elena.
“I’m really fine. I just need to go back home and replace a clinic to get some medicine. I’m anxious to stay here.”
With that, Nadia’s grandmother lifted the covers off her body and prepared to get out of bed.
“Grandma, the doctor said you have to be hospitalized in a big hospital. This is where they can cure you. Don’t worry. Uncles and the others don’t care about you, but Elena and I do. Mom and dad died a long time ago, and it was you who raised Elena and me, so how could we possibly leave you aside?”
Elena was five years older than Nadia. In the year when Nadia was six and Elena was eleven, their parents died one after another.
Their elder uncle bad wanted to send Nadia and Elena away, but their grandmother had fought tooth and nail to keep them.
From then on, their grandmother worked in the fields during the busy season, and whenever she had time, she would go to the mountains to look for herbs and sell them to pay for their school fees and send them to school.
Anyway, Nadia must cure her grandmother’s illness.
“You can rest assured. I can earn some money in my flower shop, and I can also work part–time. Now that I am married, I’m not alone anymore. We have the money to cure you.”
Only when her grandmother heard these words, she stopped insisting.
But just after lying down, she frowned as if she thought of something else.
“Forget it. I’d better go back home! You just got married. If your husband knows that I’m spending your money to be hospitalized here, I’m afraid that it will affect your relationship. I don’t want to be hospitalized anymore. Take me home!”
She really didn’t want to become her granddaughters‘ burden.
Looking at her grandmother being so persistent, Nadia hurriedly consoled her. “Grandma, you really don’t need to worry.
Chapter 8
We have modern health care now. You won’t cost much money here.”
Nadia had to comfort her grandmother this way, even though the health care would not reimburse the cost of treating her grandmother’s illness.
Hearing this, her grandmother started to relax.
“Alright then. I’ll listen to you. Take your husband to the hospital tomorrow and let me take a look.”
Although Nadia and James had received their marriage license, as Nadia’s grandmother, she still wanted to see if Nadia’s husband was a good man.
“Okay! As long as you listen to the doctor, I’ll bring him here tomorrow,” Nadia said with a soft look.
Putting her grandmother at ease, she then went to pay for her grandmother’s surgery.
It was almost one o’clock. Elena rushed to the hospital carrying an insulated lunch box with Ray.
As soon as she entered the ward, Nadia borrowed her phone. “Elena, my phone is out of battery. Can you lend me your phone? I want to make a call.”
Elena handed her phone to Nadia without even thinking.
Nadia took Elena’s phone and confirmed the receipt of the 400 dollars she had transferred just now.
She knew that if she did not help Elena click to confirm the receipt, Elena wouldn’t accept the money.
Elena took out sandwiches, soup, and green salad from the food box.
“Grandma. I made oatmeal for you. Nadia, come and eat with grandma together!”
As she spoke, she served a bowl of oatmeal. After helping their grandmother up, she started to feed oatmeal to their grandmother’s mouth one spoonful at a time.
“I’m fine. You eat with grandma! I’ll come to take care of her later. You return home afterward.”
Nadia didn’t want Elena to be so tired. She not only had to take care of her son, but she also had to take care of their grandmother.
“Can you make it?”
“Of course, I can! By the way, Nathan didn’t give you a hard time again, did he?”
As she spoke, she picked up her bag and prepared to go to buy some things. She had already agreed with Clare, the partner of the flower shop and her close friend, that she would take leave today and that she would work at the flower shop alone
tomorrow.
“No, he had already left for work when I got back.”
“Great then. Elena, I still have things to do. I’ll leave first.
“Grandma, you should eat as much as you can to keep your energy and listen to the doctor. You’ll be fine.”
After saying that, Nadia touched her nephew Ray’s head and said dotingly. “Ray, be good and listen to your mom. I’ll buy you toys next time.”
“Auntie Nadia, I’m a good boy,” said Ray in a sweet voice.
Coming out of the hospital, Nadia went straight to the supermarket.
Although she did not know what kind of daily necessities James usually used, since she was the one who would do the cooking, she could make her own decisions.
She spent two hours in the supermarket. She bought pots, pans, plates, dishwashing liquid, trash bags, and so on. She also bought bedding for herself, spending over 200 dollars in total before returning to the house in Orchid Valley.
After entering the house, she cleaned the house thoroughly. She threw everything that needed to be washed into the washing machine, made the bed, and even scrubbed the floor.
Remembering that James said he would work late, it seemed like there was no need for her to wait for him to come back for dinner.
Her grandmother liked to eat cupcakes, so she was going to make some cupcakes by herself for dinner and bring some to her grandmother.
Just as she put on her apron and prepared to make cupcakes, she heard the doorbell ringing.
Didn’t James say that he would come back very late? Why was he back so early?
As soon as Nadia opened the door, she saw Daisy standing at the door with a large suitcase, smiling all over her face and asking. “Hasn’t James come back yet?”
“Mrs. Howe, what brings you here?”
Chapter 8
Nadia thought Daisy was joking with her in the morning, but unexpectedly, she really came with her luggage.
“Aren’t you going to invite me in?” Daisy asked mischievously, her eyes overflowing with affection for Nadia. “Mrs. Howe, please come in…” Nadia said as she hurriedly took the suitcase from Daisy.
“What did you call me? You’ve become my granddaughter–in–law but you still call me that?”
“Daisy,” Nadia responded.
“What time is it? That brat isn’t back yet? Call him.”
Daisy said with displeasure as she entered and looked around, not seeing her grandson.
“He must be busy!” James previously told Nadia that he was very busy and often worked overtime.
*Busy with what? Today is your first day of marriage. Take your cell phone and call him.”
Daisy pointed to the cell phone in Nadia’s hand and said.
Nadia had no choice but to call James. Just after she made the phone call, she heard the same voice she had heard last time when she called him. “Sorry, the number you dialed is temporarily unavailable…”
Nadia frowned. How could it be like this every time?
Daisy asked. “What’s wrong? Can’t get through?”
As she asked, she took out her cell phone and dialed James.
James had many meetings, and he was now still in the middle of a meeting. He suddenly heard his cell phone ringing. After checking it, he found it was actually his grandmother’s call.
His grandmother was the boss of the family. He could leave anyone’s phone unanswered, but his grandmother’s phone must
be answered.
“Grandma, I’m still in a meeting. What’s the matter?” he asked patiently.
“Have you forgotten what day today is? Today is your first day of marriage. Do you want your newlywed wife to be at home alone? Hurry up and come back home.”
Daisy was a bit angry. James was 28 years old, but he still did not know what his priorities were.
Seeing Daisy being able to get through with James, Nadia had some doubts. Could it be that James had put her phone number on the blacklist on the first day they registered for marriage?
