Chapter 12 Death Anniversary

Dewitt recognized Camila too.

“Why are you here?” Dewitt hurriedly checked her injuries. Luckily, they were all superficial.

Dewitt pulled Camila up from the ground. “What are you doing here at this hour?”

“I came to do something.”

Dewitt looked across the street at the police station and wanted to ask something, but in the end, he didn’t do that.

“Where do you live? I’ll give you a ride.”

“Don’t bother. I’ll take a cab back.” Camila refused instinctively.

“No trouble. I’m free now anyway. Just think of me as a designated driver.”

Dewitt opened the car door.

Camila had no choice but to get in the car.

Along the way, the two didn’t have much to say to each other, and the most they

talked about was Gemma’s condition.

Twenty minutes later, the car stopped in front of the Starling’s home.

Camila was about to get out of the car when Dewitt saw the bruise on her arm and stopped her.

Then Dewitt took a first aid kit in the car and gave her a brief treatment for the

wound.

He applied the medicine skillfully and looked professional.

“You’d better come to the hospital tomorrow. I’ll treat it again. Don’t get it wet for eight hours to prevent infection.”

1288 Vouchers Maxwell was sitting in the car next to them at that moment. He saw Camila in the passenger seat and a strange man in the driver’s seat. Maxwell didn’t know what they were doing in the car. Camila stayed in the car for quite a while.

Tomorrow was the anniversary of Maxwell’s parents‘ death. Twenty years ago, his parents were killed in a car accident, and the culprit had not been found yet.

So every year, Maxwell’s mood was not good in this period.

He had arranged the best doctors for Gideon’s surgery, but just because Gideon found out about that prenuptial agreement, he refused treatment.

Maxwell admitted that he wasn’t calm enough tonight, so he sat in his car, waiting for Camila to come home and intending to talk to her.

However, he didn’t expect to see this.

Maxwell thought, “She went out at night to have a rendezvous with another man. No wonder her ex–boyfriend cheated on her. They were both at fault.”

Maxwell averted his eyes, thinking, “Why should I care about a tool?”

In the other car, Camila thanked Dewitt, opened the door, and got out.

She didn’t notice Maxwell in the shadows and pushed her way into the yard.

The light in the study was on, so Camila thought Maxwell was there. She paused for a moment before she passed the door to the study.

She suddenly had some regrets. She shouldn’t have used this way to get the money for her grandmother’s surgery.

It was really much more difficult than expected for two strangers with no emotional foundation to live together.

That night, Maxwell slept in the study again.

Early the next morning.

Maxwell left early.

Camila made breakfast as usual and brought it to Gideon’s room.

Gideon was not in a good mood today and sighed when he saw Camila.

Camila thought Gideon must be mad at her and Maxwell because of the prenuptial agreement.

She wanted to comfort Gideon, but she didn’t know how to say it.

Just as she turned to go out, Gideon called out to her.

“Today is the anniversary of Maxwell’s parents‘ death. I would like you to go and keep him company. He lost his parents when he was eight years old, and I’ve been his only family all these years. Now that I won’t be able to keep him company for long, I’ll leave him to you.”

Camila was shocked.

She took a note from Gideon. There was an address of a wharf on it.

“He goes out to sea every year on this day to visit the place where his parents died. It’s not too late for you to get there.”

Camila squeezed the note. She imagined Maxwell standing alone on the deck. She couldn’t help but empathize with him at the thought of her parents, whom she’d

never met.

She considered it a vacation for herself since her grandmother wouldn’t need company until the day after tomorrow anyway.

By the time Camila found the wharf, the yacht Maxwell was on was already more than ten meters offshore.

Maxwell was standing on the deck with his back to Camila.

Camila shouted Maxwell’s name for a long while, but the sound of the waves was too loud. Maxwell didn’t respond.

The yacht was getting farther and farther away.

Camila had to turn around and leave.

The wind on the beach was very cold. Camila gathered her jacket.

Suddenly, someone behind her called out, “Camila!”

Jerking her head back, she saw Maxwell standing behind her.

“Grandpa sent you here?” Maxwell’s voice was hoarse. As if he hadn’t slept all

night, his eyes were sunken, and he looked haggard.

“Grandpa gave me the address.”

“But I volunteered to come,” Camila thought, but she didn’t say so.

Maxwell’s Adam’s apple bobbed.

“Go back and tell Grandpa not to worry about me.”

Maxwell’s face was icy.

Camila watched Maxwell silently turn around and walk onto the board. He looked so lonely and pitiful.

Camila chased after him without a second thought.

But she was born afraid of water, especially seawater. In her impression, the sea

was scary.

She shivered as she walked on the board, and several times, she tried to pull Maxwell in front of her, but she withdrew her hand.

Just as she was about to get on the yacht, a large wave hit it, and the board shook

violently.

Camila let out a scream.

Maxwell turned around and stopped Camila from falling.

Camila was so frightened that she hugged Maxwell tightly.

She has had countless dreams of being pushed into the sea, struggling to get out, only to hear a woman’s laughter.

This nightmare had tormented her for so many years that she was scared at the sight of the sea.

Feeling Camila shivering, Maxwell carried her in his arms.

Camila’s face was pressed against Maxwell’s chest, and as she listened to his strong heartbeat, she suddenly felt less cold.

The yacht started.

Camila sat in the cabin and looked at Maxwell on the deck.

In the sea breeze, he was staring blankly into the distance.

Today was his twenty–eighth birthday. Twenty years ago, his parents rushed back to celebrate his birthday from out of town. When they were passing through the cross–sea bridge, the car suddenly lost control, hit the guardrail, and fell into the

sea.

After that, the rescue team tried to salvage the car for several months, but they

failed.

Because of this incident, the young Maxwell was once depressed. He was later sent abroad by his grandfather and slowly got better.

But from the day of his parents‘ car accident, Maxwell never celebrated his birthday again.

The heavy sadness drowned Maxwell as if he was the only one left in the world. He felt so lonely and helpless.

Camila went over to him and wanted to comfort him, but when she saw his red eyes, she couldn’t say a word.

Perhaps what he needed at this time was not comfort, but silent companionship.

Near noon, the yacht entered the sea where Maxwell’s parents had an accident.

The sea wind was getting stronger and stronger.

“Dad, Mom, I came to see you!” Maxwell shouted to the sea over and over again.

The shouts were heartbreaking.

“I miss you so much. Please come back to me!

“Grandpa asked me to tell you to come home soon after you’ve had enough fun. If you’re late, he won’t be able to see you.”

Maxwell shouted until his voice was hoarse, and in the end, he even fell to his

knees and cried.
