Flight of Fancy
Chapter 4

If he was being honest, the book completely slipped his mind for a long time.

It was a busy period in that particular rural area, especially living on a farm. It was a time for picking the grapes, gathering potatoes out of the ground, mowing the vast grasslands around the farm and several other trivial and not so trivial jobs.

So it was not surprising that there was no time to think about something as unimposing as a dusty instruction manual, while work was ubiquitous. The evenings were spent in pleasant conversations and the afterglow of the daily activities. Finally, the mind could let go of the oppression of modern society in those glorious moments when work was so overwhelming and cathartic.

It actually felt good to be alive.

He couldn’t do it all the time, but it certainly lifted his spirits every once in a while and made him forget all the woes.

This period was coming to an end and now Autumn would bring rain, quiet and a time of contemplation and introspection. There would definitely be work that needed doing, but the majority of the tasks for that season had been completed and the whole family was happy in the knowledge that they would have plenty of delicious home food to enjoy in the cold Winter months. There was still time to make some preserves from peaches, apricots and other fruit, but that could come later.

After the final day of work, just before falling into an exhausted sleep, he remembered the book and then he dreamt of flying again.
