"Did Jules send you over?" Dr. Ray's eyebrows knit even tighter. What was that guy thinking? He slammed the list back onto his desk, clearly annoyed.

...

Monday.

The medical lab called, asking Flora to report in. Flora and her counselor took leave and hurried over to the lab. Three others joined her two guys and a girl. The lab had specified they wear lab coats and masks, so they all showed up masked.

But even with masks on, some people just have that presence that grabs your attention. Like Flora. She walked up slowly, wearing a lab coat and surgical mask. She was slender, with a pale complexion and a unique aura that made you take notice.

Both guys couldn't help but glance at her several times. She looked so young. And her skin was so fair. The other girl, too, found her gaze drifting to Flora, noticing her slender, fair neck. Her eyes flickered with a hint of something.

Growing up with darker skin, she had faced her share of mocking remarks. Over time, she had developed a bit of a dislike and envy for girls with fair skin.

"Is everyone here?" Shawn came out of the lab holding a list, looking at the four standing at the door. "Let me just check names-Alexa, Tan Song... Flora."

Those called raised their hands. Shawn glanced at Flora as she raised her arm, noticing how her sleeve slid up a bit, revealing her very white wrist. He looked away quickly. "Welcome to the medical lab. I'm Shawn, think of me as your senior here. Now, let's get your fingerprints registered..."

Shawn spent the morning responsibly showing Flora and the others around the lab. Some senior members passed by, nodding slightly as a greeting. The seniors were all too busy for small talk.

"Alexa, you'll follow Sister Darcy. Tan Song, you'll be with..." Shawn hesitated when he got to Flora. The news of a freshman joining the lab had spread, and all the seniors were reluctant to mentor her. They had even messaged Shawn the night before, asking not to be assigned Flora. They felt she would only hold them back, being just a freshman with a lot of coursework still ahead and probably not much hands- on experience with surgeries and experiments.

"Flora, you'll follow me," Shawn sighed. Flora nodded casually.

Each newcomer was assigned a mentor, and they went off to their tasks. Shawn, too, had plenty to do and couldn't focus on Flora for now. He couldn't give her any important tasks, so he asked her to run errands.

"Hey, you're new, right? Can you handle this experiment for me? Make sure to record any changes," a senior sister, Darcy, rushed over, seeing Flora at the computer, and dropped a stack of documents on her desk.

"Sure," Flora nodded.

"What's your name?" Sister Darcy asked in a friendly manner. In the medical lab, masks were mandatory, so Darcy couldn't see Flora's face, only her eyes that shone like cold stars.
