I set Eve down on the sofa and tuck a blanket around her.

“You don’t have to do this.” I hate the way she sounds so insecure, like she really doesn’t want to inconvenience me. God, if she only knew how much I want her to lean on me. She has no idea how badly I want her to be under my care.

She takes it and adds it to the tree. “Are we really going to do this until it’s done? Won’t you two get tired?”

“I’m not sure if that’s an insult to our stamina, but I’ll be happy to show you just how long we can go once it’s done,” Cole says, and Eve’s legs squeeze around my head.
