Half Faced Alpha -
Chapter 39
"Axton?" She said, her eyes widening even more, if that was even possible.
A smile spread his lips as he immediately nodded. "Yes. Me. It is me, Natalia."
"What...what are you doing here?" She asked as she straightened, forcing him to lean away from her.
"What?" He asked, his voice low, the smile slowly diminishing.
"What are you going to do to me?" She looked scared, her brows furrowed and her eyes wide.
"I am not going to..."
She moved away to the farthest edge of the bed, dragging the large blanket along with her. "Stay away from me."
She looked almost hysterical, like she was facing real danger, like an abducted victim who woke up to see her abductor staring at her, not the man she had, just some time back, asked to be in love with her.
"Natalia, it is I. Axton. You just..."
"Exactly. Because it is you." She said, a small tear punctuating her word. "Please go."
"Natalia, do not...do this to me. At least listen to me."
She looked at him for a dew seconds, then suddenly started to shake her head.
"Please leave. Please just leave now."
"Natalia.."
"I said leave! Just get out! I do not want to see you or be around you, just leave. You are a monster. Please just leave me alone!"
Beta Scott walked it on hearing the noise and held Axton who was barely standing on his own. Some sentences are incomplete if you are not reading this novel on Narugi.com. Under the robe, he could feel his skin twitching hard, like someone was dragging his skin off now his body, and leaving them in a patched mess.
"Natalia, please." He didn't bother looking at it. Healing was not his priority right now, it was her.
She shook her head, then wiped her tears. "Just stay away from me while I still stay here. I intend to go back home, just stay away until I do, please."
"Natalia, I am..."
"It does not matter to me whether you are sorry or not. Sorry will not bring her back."
Her voice broke on the last word, and along with it, his resolve too.
"Sorry will not clear all those memories. Sorry will not stop me from seeing them whenever I close my eyes. So just get out."
He released himself from Beta Scott's grip, involuntarily falling on the bed. The side of his face burning. He held the groan in, and managed to speak instead.
“Natalia...Natalia, I...I beg of you. At least..." He stopped, his teeth gritting as a side of his body felt weaker. "I beg you...just listen to me."
"No. No, Axton. I hate you." She said simply, her lips quivering lightly.
"You do?" He asked, just as Beta Scott helped him up. "You hate me?"
She swallowed, slightly parting her lips so she could breathe. "So much."
The vision in his left eye was already failing, his left ear could only hear a loud, screeching sound and he was half leaning on Beta Scott's firm body. "Alpha, you are sick."
He shook his head. "It is my punishment."
"I will get the healer. I will take you to your room and get the healer."
Axton shook his head again, his left leg going completely off. He wobbled for balance on his right, and Beta Scott wrapped his arm around his shoulder to stable him.
"She will not be able to do anything."
Natalia moved further away, her eyes lowered to the bed sheet that was starting to grow slightly damp with the amount of tears she was showering on it.
"Let us go, alpha. I think miss should have her rest too." Beta Scott said and pulled Axton gently towards the door. Axton's eyes never left hers, as he waited and hoped she would at least look at him.
She didn't, and it made it feel more real. She hated him now. The same man she had been intensely, unapologetically in love with hours ago.
"But what should I do? Your face, your body..." Beta Scott said, gesturing to Alpha Axton's now shriveled face and body.
Alpha Axton turned so he could see Beta Scott who was standing to his left. "Beta...do you think she will ever forgive me?"
Beta Scott nodded. "She loves you, alpha. I am not trying to justify anything but...you were ten years younger then. I bet anyone who was given such huge responsibilities from childhood will grow to be fiercely protective of it like you were, or end up losing it. Yes, it was scary back then, but you had your reasons."
Axton nodded, and blinked hard, pushing the tears away. "I would like you to do something for me."
"Go ahead."
"The omega's father...I want to do a proper burial and acknowledgement for him."
Beta Scott nodded. "Is he the other omega's father too?"
Alpha Axton could hardly nod anymore. "Apparently. I did not know that night, not just one, but two had to mourn their father. All because of me."
"But that was the first time you ever hurt someone from your own pack. In my opinion, the fear they had for you was baseless because you never did a thing to them. You conquered other packs and made Crimson moon the biggest and richest pack. All this abundance is because of you."
"But, In the process, I turned Crimson moon to Whispers. We were rich, but no one enjoyed it. I was...I still failed."
Beta Scott sat next to him. "I understand how you must feel right now. But one thing you did not do is fail. You were a child when it started. No one in this pack is ignorant of that. Yes, it grew into you and you have a few apologies to give, but...you did not fail." Alpha Axton turned to him, forcing a small one sided smile. He knew the incident Beta Scott was referring to.
After the death of Axton's parents, the pack had employed an elder to look over the pack till Axton came of age. However, on Axton's twelfth birthday, the alpha of a neighboring pack invaded them.
He wanted their pack, and he would turn them all to omegas. One thing Axton knew he could not lose, was the last thing he had of his parents, their graves.
And on that day, even though a very brave act, he solidified his position as alpha.
He didn't come out of it unscarred, just his own scar was far different. His own scar was how he started to believe in attacking first.
He grew into the frequent wars, the invasions, and the fears he ultimately instilled in the hearts of everyone, including the people around him.
But he already knew how good it felt. Being in control. The one who is being begged for mercy. The one with the upper hand. And he never wanted to let it go. Until that night, ten years ago. "Alpha?"
Alpha Axton looked up, and then managed a one sided smile again. "Sorry."
"It is alright. I am just worried about your illness now."
Alpha Axton closed his eyes. "I will..be like this till Natalia wants me back."
"You will wait?"
"There is nothing wrong with waiting."
Beta Scott took a seat next to him. "But you can not stay like this. The pack needs you."
Tears involuntarily left his eye, and he raised his right hand to wipe it off.
"I think the worst part of this is the simple fact that being here means she still hates me." He turned to Beta Scott. "You take care of the pack from now on. I know you will do a great job. Besides, there is nothing wrong with the pack as it is."
Beta Scott watched him silently, barely recognizing the strong alpha male he used to know and have conquered packs with. The prospect of whatever entanglement Axton had with Natalia scared him.
"How can it make you so vulnerable?" He muttered under his breath, pushing his fingers to feel Axton's left skin. It felt like something that had been burnt over and over with coal, and Alpha Axton's face that he had always marveled at was half gone.
"I will take care until she comes around. And I know she will. Just rest here and keep your energy intact. I will take care of the pack for you. I will also ensure she does not leave."
Axton nodded. "If I ever get through this, you can call me just Axton."
Beta Scott nodded, a wide, mischievous smile on his face. "I will do that, Axton."
Alpha Axton rolled his functioning eye and they both laughed.
But later, when the night matured and Beta Scott fell asleep next to him, he could not help the regret that ultimately filled him and the tears it resulted into.
