Chapter 44 Oakley
Chapter 44 – Oakley
When I wake up, I’m in the infirmary. This time, no one is there when I wake up. It takes me a minute to orient myself. The
sunlight through the window shows that it’s early evening. Around dinner time. Probably why no one’s here.
I take stock of all of my injuries. Cracked ribs are sore, but seem good. Bruises are yellowing. Eye isn’t swollen anymore.. And then there’s my arm.
Well, my arm still hurts like a mother f ucker. Which tells me that something much worse than an arm being pulled out of socket happened. I sit and wait for a few minutes, but no one comes by. And I need to either get this set so that it can heal or get some pretty heavy duty pain meds as it heals. Looks like I’ve got to go replace someone on my own.
I try to move to the end of the bed, but I put weight on my hurt arm by accident and have to bite back a yelp of pain. Sweat breaks out on my forehead and I have to lay back down on the bed as pain lances through me.
It takes several minutes for me to be able to try again. This time, I cradle my right arm against my chest as I scoot to the edge of the bed. Ok. I’ve got my feet dangling over the side of the bed. Next step is to get up.
Though that sounds simple, the problem I’ve got is that I’m in a hospital gown. No undies on either. So my as s is swinging in the wind and I don’t have enough working limbs to tie it closed.
So…it’s either be in pain or modesty be dam ned.
And I was never one to enjoy pain.
Looks like my as s will be on display for anyone who cares to look.
Still cradling my arm to my chest, I scoot forward enough on the bed so that my feet touch the ground and lever myself up.
Ok. Alright. I’m up and moving. Unfortunately, each step that I take jostles my arm just a little bit, sending pain arching up to my brain. I have to stop every few steps in order to tamp down on the nausea that floods my system with the amount of pain.
I clear my little curtained in area and walk out towards the door. Even if there’s no one in here, there’s always a nurse at the
station right outside of the door,
I’m half way there when the door opens and Doc Wilder walks in. “Oakley? What the hell are you doing out of bed?” She
rushes over to me, taking in my sweaty and likely pale face.
“My arm is really hurting. Something’s wrong.” I breathe out.
“Well, yeah, something’s wrong. When you dislocated your shoulder, you also tore the ligament there. That’s the pain you’re
feeling. The muscles and nerves are reknitting themselves together. That’s the problem with wolf healing. Broken bones? No problem. Even the worst break will heal within a matter of hours. Half day at the most. But muscles? Nerves? Connective tissue? That will take a while and it’ll hurt like absolute hell.” All the while that Doc Wilder talks, she’s walking me back to my
bed.
Once I’m laying down again, she steps out to get me some meds.
When she comes back with a bottle labeled “morphine,” I know that I’m getting the good stuff. “This will probably knock you
out for a few hours.”
“Good,” I mutter. “You know this place messes with your sleep?”
jocwder gives out a chyff of laughter as she pokes the needle into my arm. “I suppose that it does. Well, enjoy your nap.

And I won’t tell Ray that you woke up. I had just convinced him to go get something to eat. I’d appreciate if you don’t rat me out.”
My eyes feel heavy as I smile at her. “Of course, Doc.” That’s all I manage to get out before the werewolf dosage of morphine she just shot me up with pulls me under.
–
The next time I wake up, it’s full dark outside. It takes a moment for my eyes to open and I replace myself staring the bedside table with a cup and a water pitcher. My mouth feels as dry as a desert. I pull myself up into a sitting position, my arm stiff and in a sling against my chest.
Slowly, I attempt to reach for the table, to try to pull it towards me, but it’s on my right side and it’s not working so well.
“Let me help,” a voice says from my other side: Footsteps come around the bed and I see Trainer Sophia beside me. She pours a me a cup of water and pops a straw in it before she hands it to me.
I smile my gratitude before sucking down the water. I empty the cup and then reach the cup out to Trainer Sophia again. She gives me a small smile before filling it up again. This time, I drink more slowly. Once my thirst is eased, I look to Trainer Sophia. “How can I help you, Trainer Sophia?”
She gives me a soft smile. “I have come with the results of the Council meeting.”
That makes me sit up straighter, “What happened?”
ok of pity passes over her face. “I had to tell them the you are here. Not in what capacity, but they know that you are

here.”
“S hit!” I mutter. “Are they coming for me now?”
“Well, that’s up to you, Trainer Sophia says. “Though the Council decided that your mate
“Ex-mate, I interrupt.
“Ex-mate,” she acknowledges. “Though they have said that Alpha Silver and your family are allowed to know that you’re here, they have also decided that you are allowed to decide whether or not they are to see you.”
“What?” I ask, completely dumbfounded.
“You get to make the choice. You’re family is here. So is Alpha Silver. They will stay in the city until you make your decision. You have 48 hours. If you decide not to see them, that you want nothing else to do with them, then you will call Alpha Silver to receive his portion of the rejection. That way, you will no longer be bound to him. And that will be it,” Trainer Sophia says, taking a deep breath before continuing.
“If you decide to see them, it will happen in my office, a guard stationed outside the door. Inside too, if that’s something that you want. You can meet them however you wish, individually, together, whatever. And you can make your decision then and there. To reject them or to go with them. Because your rejection with Alpha Silver is only half finished, it can still be repaired. One of the historians will come to help to heal the bond, which will include marking Alpha Silver. After that, you’ll be free to go
back to your mate and your family”
I’m about to answer when there is a huge roar not feet from us.
I look up in fear, though Trainer Sophia seems to have expected this reaction. It’s Ray. His wolf has fully taken control of his consciousness, his eyes pitch black and fur sprouting all over his skin. His nose has elongated into a snout, his jaws sporting a mouthful of dangerously sharp teeth. His black stare is fully on me, possessiveness and anger covering his entire gaze.
“NO!” Ray and his wolf howl together. “My mate! Mine! No one will take her from me!”

Sophia turns to Ray and I can feel her aura shoot from her. It has me nearly bending my n*eck in submission within the first second that it’s expelled and it’s not even being directed at me. The sheer magnitude of Sophia’s power has sweat beading on my forehead, my teeth gritted and my b*dy taught with tension.
Ray is having a similar reaction and he is quickly loosing the battle against her. His n*eck is bending, though his eyes show the anger that belies how much he doesn’t want to. But it’s inevitable. His n*eck bends, his b*dy bowing even to show his submission to Sophia and the second he does, his wolf starts to recede until there’s nothing left of his appearance but a memory.
Sophia walks closer to Ray and I feel her aura starting to abate. Standing in front of him, Sophia says, “I know how you feel about Oakley. I also know how she feels about you. Trust that your mate will make the right decision and stop wolfing out.”
