Heartstrings on Fire (Agnes and Jared) -
Chapter 562
Chapter 562
"My mom cares a lot about our reputation, you have no idea what this woman did to her in the past. She's a cold-blooded woman, otherwise why didn't my mom get a single penny after my dad's death, even though she was his legal wife. All the company and properties were taken over by my sister. Over the past years, my mom has had a hard time because of her."
Hammer furrowed his brows, "Got it, Ms. Beatrice"
With a smug look, Beatrice left.
Agnes waited in the living room for a while.
Hammer came in, "Ms Agnes, your room is ready. Please follow me"
Agnes got up and followed Hammer upstairs.
He led her to an attic at the top of the house.
The moment he opened the door, a musty smell hit her.
It didn't look like a guest room at all. There was nothing but a bed, and the ceiling sloped down so steeply that you could hardly stand upright on the bed.
For a mansion with hundreds of rooms, they took her to an attic?
Hammer seemed to pick up on Agnes' confusion.
He said with a smile, "I'm sorry. You mentioned you need a firm bed, and this is the only room in the mansion with a firm bed. It's late now, and it's not convenient to move the bed. You can stay here for tonight, and I'll arrange something else tomorrow."
Agnes knew the score, the so-called firm bed was just an excuse.
It was probably Laura or Beatrice who had told him to make her stay uncomfortable.
But Agnes didn't care.
She felt it didn't matter where she stayed, as long as she had a place to stay.
Agnes said with a smile, "This attic is fine, I'll stay here. Thanks for your effort, Hammer." Hammer didn't expect Agnes to be so chill.
"Ms. Agnes, feel free to let me know if you need anything," Hammer said before leaving. Agnes went in.
The room was obviously untended for a long time, and it probably used to be a storage room, filled with a musty smell from the lack of ventilation.
Seeing a window in the room, Agnes immediately opened it.
After a while, the air in the room became a bit fresher.
Though it was an attic room, it had a separate bathroom.
Agnes first tidied up her luggage, cleaned the room a bit, and then took a shower in the bathroom.
The sheets and quilt on the bed were new, it was quite comfortable lying on it.
Agnes began to think about her next move, she couldn't stay here for long.
Neither Laura nor Beatrice would allow her to stay for a long time.
She had to replace out where the remittance slip might be hidden.
Agnes had always suspected that something so important would be kept by Laura in a safe. Because Laura used to have a safe in the Pritchard family house, where she kept her jewelry.
Now she had no clues, and could only resort to the most stupid method.
She needed to replace Laura's safe and check if Laura still kept the remittance slip.
Anyway, this was something to be dealt with tomorrow.
Agnes felt inexplicably tired and fell asleep shortly after lying down.
However, her sleep was not stable.
It was already late November, and the weather had turned cold.
There was no fireplace in Agnes' room, and the quilt was thin. Agnes woke up several times because of the cold.
She wanted to go out and ask for an extra quilt, but the servant she met said it was Hammer's duty, and Hammer was nowhere to be found.
In the end, Agnes had no choice but to use her down jacket from her suitcase as a blanket, and barely made it through the night.
