Katherine's POV

I stood in front of my full-length mirror, admiring myself in my new office wear.

I had decided to dress in a black pencil skirt, white blouse, and black high heels which would give me the needed height, and to finish off the look, I had decided to wear the necklace Xavier gave me.

My fingers instinctively moved over the simple, yet elegant necklace. I have grown fond of the item and it reminded me of Xavier.

I tied my long auburn hair into a high pony, set off toward the washroom to finish and do my makeup. When I was satisfied with my appearance and believed I looked decent enough to act as the new CEO of the company, I stepped out and was chauffeured to the headquarters of King Enterprises in a sleek black SUV.

Swiftly, I arrived at the premises of King Enterprises. Stepping out of the vehicle, my gaze drifted towards the towering edifice before me, resplendent in its majestic white hue. For a minute I stood frozen, feeling overwhelmed and a bit intimidated by the size of the building.

I remember vaguely that the building itself housed 65 floors. It was not the largest building, but was seemingly the fanciest and most modern building in the area.

My gaze moved along the tall white building's wall, searching for the top floor, and swallowed hard against the knot formed in my throat.

According to John, my office will be located on the top floor overlooking the city below.

I let out a breath I did not know I was holding and climbed the few steps toward the glass doors. I hesitated for a second at the door before I found the courage to open the door.

The reception area was quiet and seemingly it looked like there was no one around. I headed to the reception desk to sign myself in.

John was engaged in conversation with a young girl adorned with long red hair and brown eyes at the reception desk.

"Kate, let me introduce you," John said calmly as he closed the door behind him and casually walked closer.

"This is your new personal assistant, Sarah," he pointed to the young girl and introduced me, "She was personally assigned to you by the personnel department..." he said. Personally, assigned?

Was she my father's assistant?

I gave the girl a quick nod of my head, acknowledging her, and turned back to John.

"Come, come, let me show you to your office," John said and gestured for me to follow him.

"I am a floor below you," John continued, "I am in the operations department. We will be working together on some of the projects..."

That was interesting... I wonder which ones...

John opened the office door, and I stepped in.

The office was huge, with bookshelves against the walls. My gaze moved from side to side, feeling my father's presence still lingering inside.

I walked toward his office desk, and his familiar forest scent enveloped me.

I shivered on the spot as he took a deep breath, feeling my heart aching, uncontrollably in my chest...

Oh, Daddy, I miss you so much. I wish you could see me now... I will replace a way to avenge you and Momma.

Tears burned behind my eyelids, and I scrunched my hands into fists. I got up and walked toward the big wide windows overlooking the city below.

I swallowed hard against the lump in my throat, fighting against the tears burning behind my eyelids.

John kept quiet, giving me time to get my emotions under control.

"Kate," John called from behind me, "if this is too much...?"

"No," I shook my head, "I will be fine..."

"Very well," he said and turned toward Sarah.

"I'll be returning to my office then," he said, "if you need anything or have a question, Sarah will be able to assist you..."

After that, John turned and rushed toward the door, winked at Sarah as he passed her, and in return, she nodded her head, followed by a lustful smile as her eyes followed John toward the elevator.

I narrowed my eyebrows and looked at the girl with interest.

Sarah looks far too comfortable to be just a normal Personal Assistant...

What kind of arrangements does she have with John...?

"Ms. Kate," Sarah called, and I turned my attention toward her.

"Yes?" I asked as I took a seat at my father's desk. I will give myself time to wend when all of this is over. Now was not the time, and I had a lot to do.

"Would you like some coffee?" She asked, and I nodded my head.

The redhead assistant left my office, giving me some time to think.

I sat back, crossed my fingers, and my gaze landed on the ceiling.

My mind wandered off, remembering that John said there were big projects he was busy with and he needed approval from the board of Directors. Why was he so interested in getting Black Umbrella Enterprises involved? Sarah returned with a cup of coffee in her and placed it on the desk.

"Thank you," I said and watched the girl take a step back.

"Is there anything else I can do?" Sarah asked, smiling.

"No," I answered, but then hesitated, and sat upright, changing my mind on the spot. "Wait, yes, please bring me the last five years' financial statements for the company..."

"Ms. Kate," she said, and found my gaze, she looked a bit worried, "I am sorry to inform you mam, but because you are currently in the learning stage, you still need to ask permission from the chairman if you may look at the financial reports. He will then inform the Chief Financial officer to provide you with the report.

Would you mind waiting a moment? The Chairman should not have gone far. I will ask him to give the instructions..."

I glanced at Sarah; a bit surprised.

She looked proud of her statement, yet her reasoning did not make sense.

I am the CEO, and I needed to read the reports. Who told her that I needed permission to look through any documentation?

I refuse to lose the first battle on my first day!

"I do not need permission to see the financial reports, or even any other business dealings," I roared, "Do you understand that?" And jumped to my feet.

I needed to remind Sarah that I was the heir of this company and refuse to bid by her rules.

I was not delusional; I knew John was behind the order. He would manipulate the employees to make my life difficult.

I internally laughed as I watched Sarah's face whiten. She just opened a door for me which would have John off my back. If I created an uproar among the employees, John would certainly believe I was not capable of handling the work stress, and he would sit back, relax, and wait for me to fail.

That will give me time to replace the dirt on him...

"Y-y-yes, yes," Sarah found her voice, as she stuttered nervously, "1-1-I will go get the reports for you now..."

Sarah rushed out of my office, toward the elevator to get the information I needed, yet I had a feeling that she would stop at John first to get permission.

I sighed; irritated and took a sip of my coffee.

My cell phone suddenly rang next to me, and a small smile played on my lips as soon as I recognized the number...

"I am downstairs," the familiar husky voice came through the receiver, and an excited giggle escaped my lips.

"Should I buzz you in?" I asked, feeling another giggle push through my lips.

"No," he replied seriously, "I have a business meeting..."

"Oh," I answered and sighed a bit disappointed.

"Aren't you coming?" He asked, confused.

"But you just said..."

"Yes, I know what I just said," he answered, "we have an appointment... have you forgotten? Check your calendar..."

I did as he said, and surprisingly, there was a booking on my phone calendar...

How?

I shook my head in disbelief.

"Yes, but..." I started to argue, "I can't go out now, I am waiting for the financial reports..."

"The ones John is manipulating in his office?" He asked, sounding annoyed.

How the hell does he know that..?

"I just..."

"Come on Katherine," Xavier said, "I will have the correct financial reports emailed to you..."

I sighed in defeat.

"Very well," I answered, "see you in five minutes."

"Can't wait," Xavier said and cut the call.

My assistant returned the moment I pressed the elevator button, and the doors flew open.

"Ms. Kate?" She stopped me, "Where are you going? Don't you want to read the reports?"

"Leave it on my desk," I answered, aloof, "I'm going out for a business lunch."

"Give me a moment and I will come with you," she tried to stall me, and my gaze fell on the smeared lipstick on her lips.

"There is no way I would let you help me look like that," I sneered through gritted teeth, "go clean yourself up before someone sees you and you smear the King Group's good name through the mud!"

I let go of the elevator doors and called for the ground floor.

I found Xavier waiting in the reception area, minding his own business. He was unconcerned with all the attention around him.

Was he deliberately ignoring every girl that threw themselves at him?

I growled under my breath as I walked through the turnstile and the girls scattered to their offices.

"Ah, finally!" Xavier said, breaking the rage in me, and got to his feet, "I was worried that you had decided to cancel our appointment..."

I rolled my eyes at Xavier and came to a stop in front of him.

"I don't know how you did it, but I know that the meeting wasn't there this morning..." I challenged.

Excitement followed in Xavier's face and he bent forward toward my ear.

"I told you I have many ways to access things... even your phone."
