Chapter 4

Xavier's

POV

"Mate is awake," Ray mused in my mind.

He was more himself now that Katherine was close by...

I got up from my office chair and stalked out of my office toward my room.

I haven't gone into the office the last few days, Ray didn't allow me...

I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding and opened my chamber's front door...

Goddess, why am I so nervous?

I stalked toward the spare room, but just as my hand got hold of the door handle, I froze...

"Bloody hell!" I swore under my breath, "What the hell was wrong with me? I never get nervous!"

I took another breath and gathered my nerves before I found the courage to open the door and walk in.

"Go to mate!" He ordered, getting agitated at my lack of confidence.

"My mate, you finally woke up," I said, pinning her gaze.

"I..." she croaked.

"She needs water!" Ray yelled, "Get her some water... mate's throat is dry from the coma..."

"Don't talk yet." I gestured to Katherine to give me a second, then stalked toward the table and poured her a glass of water, before I handed it to her...

"Here..." I said and watched her. She unconsciously sniffed the contents, unsure...

"It is water, not poison..." I said and chuckled, "why would I hurt my mate, right?"

Oh! Moon Goddess! I can't believe I actually said my thoughts out loud! I swallowed hard, and now my already tense mood was even more jittery because of what slipped out of my mouth. I swear I can hear my heart pounding in my chest... I felt like a ticking time bomb, ready to explode at any sec.

"Thanks..." she said, and Ray howled in my mind, excited to hear the girl's voice that brought shivers to my body with just one word.

I carefully took the glass from her, cautious not to make any sudden movements...

"Mate is checking you out," Ray purred in my mind.

"W-w-who are you?" she asked.

"She might have amnesia," Ray commented, "be gentle to her..." he warned.

I almost burst out laughing at her seriousness.

"I will," I said, cutting him off.

This girl was something... different and I wanted to know more about her...

"Ray, can you connect with Katherine's wolf?" I asked.

I didn't believe that the doctor said she was only human. She might look like one, smell like one and act like one, but something tells me she was more than just human... "He says, you are welcome..." I answered.

"What?" she suddenly asked, and I wondered if she was trying to read me.

I lifted my gaze and Katherine slightly shivered.

"Kathrine..."

"Kate," she cut me off, and something in her eyes told me that she was wondering how I knew who she was...

I sighed and got to my feet... how will I tell her that in the last couple of days, her family declared her dead...

"Kate, you have been in a coma for a couple of days..." The words escaped my lips before I thought of what I was saying, "I want you to tell me what happened..."

"I... I..." I lifted my gaze, looking at her as she struggled to replace the words.

"Even if I told you, you wouldn't believe me..." she answered, and hate and despair crossed her eyes.

"Kate, I have seen the marks on your body, the doctor confirmed that you have been tortured..." I wasn't sure if that would anger her, yet I tried to reassure her that I would always be at her side. "Tell me who has done this to you..." A frustrated breath left her lips, and she dripped her head... was she ashamed? She was Katherine King for the Goddess's sake, the heiress of the whole King Group!

Yet, something told me this was deeper than I imagined... and it wasn't just the business her father owned...

I pulled my phone out of my pocket and searched for the latest news about her death, then showed her the news headline screaming confirmation of her death.

Kate grabbed hold of my wrist, and I unconsciously shivered at her touch... The warm electric current flowing around my wrist at every place our skin touches... "Oh Goddess, this... this is heaven..."

"These animals!!" Kate growled, angered, and I flinched at the intensity of her anger.

Her auburn hair suddenly looked redder around her face, and her eyes glowed a bright yellow...

I moved away, unsure if Kate was about to shift...

I suddenly knew that all the previous torture and falling into the river, as well as the cruel truth, had caused serious harm to her body and mind.

I looked up at Kate and revealed a smile.
