Katherine's

POV

"That is the downside of revenge, and since I decided to take that route, it will be dangerous."

Xavier looked at me and gave me a grave smile.

"You are right," he said, "it is precisely that reason why you need to be vigilant; otherwise, how would you be able to take your revenge?"

Xavier took out a file from the file bag and handed it to me.

"Here is all the information about the man you found on the website," Xavier said, pinning my gaze as he set the file on the coffee table. "If you want to go down this road, you can open it. If you decide against it, burn it."

I internally rolled my eyes at Xavier and smirked. There was no stopping me from getting John and his family behind bars. I picked up the file from the table and carefully opened it without hesitation.

As I browsed through the information, a sudden cold feeling ran down my spine.

It turned out that although the man was a director of the company, he was also a Wolf Council member.

At the end of the file, there was even a photo of John sitting with the man at Pink Flamingos, and the date stamp on the photo was taken recently.

"The club's owner is my friend," Xavier explained. "Most of his deals are a bit shady. He was willing to give up some information on these two as a favor," Xavier said, and he got up.

Xavier walked to the alcohol cabinet and poured two glasses of wine before he handed me one.

I took a sip of the wine, and my mind wandered off.

I was always well taken care of and hidden from the outside world. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be pulled into the darkest ends of the business world.

The closest thing I ever came to such a drama was watching it on TV.

I sighed, feeling dread, anger, and even sadness push up in me.

What would have happened if my parents were still alive? Would things have spiraled out of control as well?

"What's the matter?" Xavier asked, startling me. "Are you scared?"

"No," I said, shaking my head. "I said I wanted revenge; I am not afraid of it."

Xavier gave me a curious look and took a seat next to me.

Some days, I wonder what he thinks. Did he replace me interesting because I hated my family so much? Or was it because I had no fear in my heart?

"These photos don't prove much except that they know each other, and I can't use them to confront John," I said, "and since he is a director, it's normal to have contacts signed in private. I need to replace proper evidence that John can't weasel himself out of it." Xavier nodded in understanding.

I took out the notebook that belonged to John and placed it on the coffee table. I have gone through the numbers numerous times. Yet I couldn't figure out what they meant.

Xavier picked up the book and flipped through the pages. His eyes darkened, and he slowed his browsing.

"What? What are you seeing?" I asked, curious to know what Xavier had found.

"Take the book with you to work tomorrow and compare it with your company's financial report to see if there is a match."

The next morning, I called Sarah to my office and requested that she gather all the financial reports from the financial department again, and by 10 a.m., the financial department had personally delivered those reports to my office.

I started my research, going through every report bit by bit.

When I eventually finished the documents for the last two years, I felt defeated about not replaceing anything that matched the numbers in the book.

I sighed, feeling a bit depressed.

What do these numbers mean? Why were they taunting me?

I slowly rose from my chair and shifted my gaze to the side.

What if?

I turned, stalked out of my office, passed Sarah, and ran to the business department.

I quickly gained access to the project file room and started to look through the register.

As soon as I turned over the page, my heart pounded in my throat, and I knew I had found what I was looking for.

My hands were trembling with excitement as I rushed down toward the filing cabinet to retrieve the file.

In order not to let Sarah know what I had found, I went down to reception and asked Kelly to copy and scan the file, email it to my PC, and then have the file returned to the business department.

I made sure I left the company earlier than normal, and I was sitting in the living room reading through the contents of the report when I couldn't replace anything out of order.

It was just another ordinary project-nothing too special about it.

I read through it over and over, but I couldn't replace anything wrong with it. Yet, I had this nagging feeling at the back of my mind that I was missing the obvious.

Why would John write down this file number in his black book?

Why was this file number so important?

Was it just for a record?

I shook the last thought off; that wasn't John's style. He only kept records of things that were important to him.

"Why the long face?" Xavier asked as he entered the living room.

"I can't seem to replace anything wrong with the contact, yet I know something must be wrong with it," I answered, frustrated. "What am I missing?"

I handed the document to Xavier, and he took a look, and it wasn't even a minute later, I had my answer.

"This agreement was made two years ago," he said, looking at me. "The agreement itself is fine, but the problem lies in the quotation. Look!"

The price quoted two years ago is very different from the current price. If someone had quoted such a high price two years ago, no one would have been willing to sign a contract. Although this price seems normal now, it would have been a very big problem two years ago.

"And here?" Xavier pointed to the name, and I gasped. They were the same company that received huge amounts of money.

"Now I just need to replace the rest of these contracts," I said excitedly. "So that I can get John out of the King Group completely!"
