Xavier's

POV

I stared at the report Greyson handed me in shock.

"Are you sure?" I asked.

"Yes," he answered and nodded, "I had them do the test three times to ensure it was correct."

"What does the doctor say?" I asked.

"He confirms it's true," he answered and smiled. "Should I say congratulations?"

"Does she know?" I asked, worried.

"I am not sure," Greyson answered. "The doctor wanted to come and see you about it, but with everything going on, it wasn't possible."

I pulled my hands through my hair, getting worried. The signs were there, yet we were all so busy that I just brushed them off as a coincidence. This was certainly not the best time.

I raised my eyebrows and looked at Greyson. He was silently observing me.

"You don't seem to be very happy about the news," he stated.

"It's not that I am not," I said and sighed. My thoughts were racing at a million miles per hour.

How do I handle this?

"It is just the wrong time," I said, worried.

Greyson grabbed my shoulder and gave it a bit of a squeeze.

"Everything will work out just fine," he said seriously. "I am sure of it. But I do suggest you tell Luna."

"Yes-yes..." Another breath escaped my lips, and I felt the worry push up inside me. How will Kate react when she replaces out? Will she accept it? Will she be angry?

"How far is Kate's birthday planning coming?" I asked.

"So far, everything is on schedule," Greyson answered. "I believe Luna would love the theme you picked for her."

"I heard Kelly is Kate's new assistant," I said, watching Greyson's reaction.

"Yes, Kelly is excited," Greyson said a bit sourly.

"And you are not?" Why do I have a feeling that you are a bit jealous of your mate?"

"I am not," he answered a bit too fast. "I am just worried for my mate's sake."

I could understand, but Kelly could look after herself, and with Kelly by Kate's side, I felt a bit more relaxed. It was a great idea for Kate to move her to her side.

The rest of the day passed quickly, and just before it was time to leave, Greyson hurried into my office.

His facial expression told me trouble was coming, and I was particularly not in the mood.

"What?" I asked, getting up and grabbing my jacket.

"Brenda is here," he said, taking a step toward the door.

He knew I was about to lose my cool.

"Who let her in?" I growled, annoyed.

"The new security guard downstairs..." Greyson answered, looking over his shoulder.

"How did..."

The elevator rang, and my gaze snapped toward the elevator, revealing Brenda.

Greyson, looking like a deer caught in headlights, was not sure if he should stay or leave.

Brenda walked past my secretary's desk, smiled and waved at her, and rushed toward my office. I watched as my secretary tried to stop her, but Brenda was one step in front of her. By this time, I was boiling.

Why would Brenda come here now?

Why always at the most inconvenient times?

"Xavier!" Brenda's squeak and the sound of her voice reminded me of dry chalk on a blackboard. A cold chill ran down my back, and I turned toward Greyson.

"Ensure everything is ready to the finest detail, and ensure Kate gets picked up on time."

"Yes, Alpha."

Greyson left, and Brenda walked in.

"Brenda, why are you here?" I growled, crossing my arms around my chest. "You don't have an appointment."

"I know," she said, not caring about my anger and taking a seat. "I came to see how you are doing."

"You could have just called," I said coldly.

"Yeah, but where will the fun be in that? And," she said, lifting her index finger to the air, "there is that little issue of you not answering my calls; you gave me no choice but to come here." "What do you want?" I snapped. I wasn't in the mood for her games, and Brenda never cared for anyone except herself.

"Have you told your fiance?" She asked.

"Tell her about what exactly?" I growled, feeling a new wave of anger push up inside of me.

Ray walked out of the depths of my mind, feeling irritated. Katie must be trying to connect with him.

"Know about me and the pup, silly?" She asked, biting her lip.

"I don't know what you are talking about," I growled under my breath.

"You do know the pup is yours?" She asked, seeking my gaze.

"Prove it!" I spat at her. "And even if he was, it wouldn't change anything between us."

"Don't you want a relationship with your only child?" Brenda pushed, cutting me off.

I looked at the girl I once loved and shook my head in disbelief; this wasn't about me and the boy.

"Brenda, what are you really doing here?" I yelled at her.

In times like these, I wish Greyson was here to get a read on her.

I internally sighed.

Brenda's records were squeaky clean, except for her mate dying and rumors about his involvement in disappearing she-wolves; nothing more came up. There isn't much information on where she was or what she had been doing for the last couple of years. "I need money, Xavier," she said, dropping her gaze. "I need to feed the pup."

If that was the only reason, it would be the easiest way to get rid of her, but I knew better.

"How much?" I asked and turned to get my checkbook.

"Two million," she said, and I raised my gaze.

"What are you trying to pull?" I sneered. "You need two million to feed the pup now. Is he some sort of gold-eating machine?"

Brenda heard the sarcasm in my voice, lifted her gaze, and sought mine.

"No," she answered, "I need a place to stay. See the payment as unclaimed child support."

"I will not help you with that," I said, irritated.

"Then I have no other choice but to inform your fiance about the pup," Brenda said, getting to her feet. "I wonder how she would feel if she knew that you didn't even care about your own flesh and blood." Greyson appeared at the door, hearing Brenda's words.

"Alpha," he said, looking between the two of us as he entered. "The car is waiting for you."

"We will continue this later," I hissed at Brenda. "For now, I have an urgent meeting to attend to."

Brenda chuckled, amused.

"Is that what you call her birthday party?" She asked and raised a perfect eyebrow.

I froze for a second before I turned and stalked out the door.

Brenda was many things, but I was sure she wouldn't dare try to make a scene at Kate's birthday party.
