Xavier's

POV

My face whitened when I heard the name, and I sank back in my chair.

Greyson didn't want to discuss what he found in the hotel, just in case we were being watched. We ended up at the office, knowing it was secured. "Tell me you are joking," I said to Greyson.

"I wish I was," he said, narrowing his eyes. "What are you thinking?"

Thinking?

Was Greyson asking me in so few words to weigh Kate's life?

"Send the trucks," I ordered, "there is no other way I can't risk her life."

Greyson nodded and turned to one of the warriors standing close by.

"You heard your Alpha," he said. "Get the trucks ready."

"Yes, Beta Greyson."

"I need you to trace the trucks," I said to Kelly when the warrior left my office. "Make sure no one knows that we are tracing them." Kelly nodded, turned on her heels, and left.

"Will you be fine?" Greyson asked, cocking his head to the side, reading me.

"I'll be fine," I answered. "I'm not sure if I will be able to control Ray, though."

"Understandable," Greyson said, "but promise me you will not do anything stupid."

I lightly laughed.

Greyson knew me quite well, and my thoughts ran back to my younger years, when I lost Tara, my first love, to a house fire.

I was sixteen at the time, and it was a week before my seventeenth birthday when the fire took her and her home.

When the blazing flames consumed the small wooden cottage, I lost control of all my senses and ran into the fire, hoping to save her.

Greyson's father pulled me out, and the heartbreak was excruciating when I was told she didn't survive and her body hadn't been found.

I internally sighed as her pitied face flashed before my eyes.

Tara and I believed we were mates. We believed we were meant to be together. We were inseparable, and I couldn't get enough of her-to Greyson's annoyance-until the day of the fire.

My heart was scattered, and my mind was a mess. It was worse when I had to bury an empty casket.

Afterward, I started doing crazy things to try and ease the pain inside me; if it weren't for Greyson, I might have been dead a long time ago.

"I promise," I said, "I will not put you through that again."

"Thanks," he said, turning toward the door. "I am going to help Kelly."

"Greyson," I said, and he stopped in his tracks.

"Yeah?" He asked, turning his head to look over his shoulder.

"I need you to take the information to Head Councilor Williams," I said, and I gave the file he compiled back to him.

"Are you sure?" He asked, a bit startled.

I nodded.

"If they do harm Kate," I swallowed hard against the lump that had formed in my throat, thinking of the possibility of her not returning home, "at least Councillor Williams will investigate and have those involved punished. It might save a few lives in the process as well." Greyson nodded in understanding and left my office.

My mind was a mess, and the worry was consuming me bit by bit.

I couldn't bear to lose her.

I got up and walked toward the huge office windows overlooking the city below.

Nighttime has always held the most beautiful but mysterious view from here.

I sighed, feeling my heart painfully scrunch in my chest.

"I can't lose her," I whispered to no one in particular. "It will kill me..."

A stray tear escaped my eyes, and my fingers moved over the moist trail it left on my face.

I knitted my eyebrows together, confused as I looked at the salty moisture on my fingertips.

I was crying.

I blinked a couple of times, bewildered at what I was seeing. I stopped crying when I lost Tara. The agony of losing her had disabled me from feeling that emotion.

I never shed a tear when my parents died or when Brenda left and rejected me.

How was it possible that just the idea of losing Kate brought that emotion back to me?

I took a deep breath, trying to bring my emotions under control, but my heart pounded in my chest even worse, and my hands instinctively grabbed hold of the left side of my chest.

My legs gave way under me, forcing me to the floor, and I clenched my hands on my chest.

"She's not dead," I reminded myself. "Kate is still alive!"

Yet my mind didn't listen, and the most excruciating pain rippled through my body.

"She is not dead!" I growled weakly, pushing myself up from the ground. "I know she is not..."

Footsteps sounded in the hallway, and I straightened my clothes before the office door hinges screamed, indicating their arrival.

"Did you succeed?" I asked, assuming it was Kelly or Greyson, but when the revolting cheap perfume hit my nose, I knew I was wrong. "Oh, yes," the girl said. "I have."

I turned around, looking at the woman I never thought would manage to enter my office building.

She looked proud of whatever she had accomplished, and a sinister smile followed on her red lips.

"Erika?" I growled darkly, feeling anger push up inside of me.

Why the hell was she here?

Did she take Kate?

"Alpha Xavier, long time no see," she said sweetly, licking her lips, and her eyes carried so much lust as she walked closer.

"Why are you here?" I spat disgust at her and turned to leave for the door.

Erika rushed closer and grabbed my arm, pulling me back.

"Wait a minute," she said, holding onto my arm.

I immediately shook her hands off in disgust, sidestepped her, and pushed toward the door.

"Don't you want to know where your precious Kate has been taken and locked up?" She yelled behind me.

That had done it, and I immediately stopped in my tracks, roared out of anger, and stormed toward her, stopping inches from her face.

"And you know where, don't you?" I roared coldly. I watched Erika shiver at the coldness in my voice, yet a smile appeared at the corners of her lips, and I took a step back. "Yes, I do," she said.

"This is not a joke, Erika!" I growled. "I do not have time for your sh*t!"

"Who said I was joking?" She said this, rolling her eyes at me. "Let me show you something first."

Erika pulled her phone from her handbag and switched it on. Enjoy this chapter for free and stay updated with the latest version on Job_ni-b.c-om. Don't miss out, visit it now. She then handed me her phone to have a look at the video clip that was date-stamped moments ago.

A man in the video clip had a suit on and his back was turned to the camera, yet I recognized him as Greyson and the other man as Councilor Williams.

"Looking at your face," Erika smiled slyly, "you know the person."

"What do you want?" I asked and threw the phone back at her.

"My request is very simple," she said, looking me up and down and pinning her gaze at my crotch. "You can probably guess what I want."

Erika blushed lightly before she continued.

"I have already booked a room for us," she said, licking her lips and moving her index finger down my jaw. "If you are not willing, then I have no other choice but to forward the video."

Erika rested her finger on the send button, waiting for my answer.

"Time is ticking," Erika said. "Take your precious time to decide. It's not as if it's not almost time."

I shook my head in disbelief. How did this girl become so evil and self-centered? She could have been such a beautiful trophy wife if she wasn't so ugly at heart.

"No?" She said this and moved her finger to the send button. "Too bad. I thought you cared for Kate."

"Wait!" I yelled and snatched her phone away from her.

"I give in," I said, lowering my head in disgust, "but you need to promise that you will not hurt Kate and help me save her in the end."

A sinister smile appeared on her lips.

"Of course," she said, "but you will have to treat me well first."

I grabbed the phone from Erika, threw it against the wall, and it smashed into pieces. I then turned toward Erika, who looked at me in disbelief and shock.

"Let's go," I said, smiling darkly at her as I started to plan my next move.
