The door to the room opened, and they pulled apart to see Jane and a few other workers from the parlour standing there. A big smile spread over her face on seeing them present at the temple, alive and well. They moved and gathered around her bedside, all having looks of relief on their faces as they beheld her. It warmed her heart up and made her grateful to be alive.

“Thank you all for coming to see me,” she said, her eyes looking through the crowd around her bed.

“It’s the least we can do for everything you did,” Jane smiled cheerfully at her.

“And thank you for not abandoning us in the blazing house,” Kyra said with a grateful smile on her face.

“I would never do that. You’re all my family and I’m happy we made it. I believe whatever comes our way, we will overcome.”

The workers stayed around for a few more hours before most took their leave, leaving only a few behind. As the crowd in the room reduced, her eyes searched for the few notable faces she longed to see, but didn’t see them and that arouse her concern.

She turned to stare at Jane. “Where are Romeo and Kemi?”

Jane’s head dropped in remorse, and Kailani’s heart clenched in her chest, knowing something bad had happened. “No.”

“Romeo learnt Kemi was still trapped in the parlour and he went in to bring her out. He went in and never made it back.” Jane explained, and a tear rolled down her face.

Kailani sobbed bitterly and tears streamed down her face and her lips trembled. This wasn’t the life she told them they will have with her, this wasn’t the safe and peaceful life she promised them. She failed, she couldn’t protect them. They died a painful death and she couldn’t do anything to stop that.

This was on her. She should have done more to make sure they lost no one, but she failed.

Edward tried taking her hand, but she pulled it away from him. She did not want consolation; she wanted to grieve the loss of those she held dear. She wanted to cry.

“We will get justice for those we lost, Kailani, I promise,” Edward vowed under his breath.

Jane and Edward were with her on every side until her return home. They comforted her and made provisions for her when she needed them. They stayed with her, not for that day but also the rest two days until she could return home from the temple.

As she rode through the gates of her house, she saw Rue already waiting for her before the entrance. She got down from the carriage and approached the door where she stood.

“Lani!” she ran over to her and they threw their arms around each other.

“Rue!” they stayed that way for a while before pulling away.

“I heard about what happened. I am sorry. Oliver and I have been in the East meeting the physicians there. We returned yesterday, and I came as soon as I could.” she explained.

Kailani beamed at her and stroked her face tenderly. “I’m glad I get to see you one more time.” She said, and they hugged again.

Kailani retired to bed to get a rest, as instructed by the priest who attended to her at the temple before her discharge. She needed to heal from the minor aches left and getting as much rest as she could would help her do that.

Edward stood at the door watching as she tuck herself into bed, and her eyes caught him. She beckoned to him to come closer, and he obeyed and drew closer to the bed.

She took his hand and pull him into the bed so he would lie beside her. “I don’t know what you did, but thank you.”

His eyes narrowed. “What do you mean?”

“Jane told me there was no way I could have survived the smoke. She told me she tried persuading you to not go into the parlour, but you went in and somehow I’m here.”

“I did what I had to do to make sure you survive.” His words grew faint towards the end.

She brought his hand up to her lips and leathered k****s over the back of it. “Thank you,” she mumbled between k****s.

“You’re welcome, always.”

He placed his head against hers and his eyes stayed shut. His breath fanned against her face, causing weakening shivers to run through her. She bit her lips before leaning in and placing her lips on his, kissing him slowly.

He kissed back immediately with such a fierce force that took her breath away. His hands roamed over her body and he cupped her breast through her clothing. He got on top of her, careful not to put too much pressure on her as he kissed her neck and shoulder while getting her out of the clothes and worshipping her with his tongue and mouth. He pulled the clothes down her body, exposing her to his eyes from the waist up. His hand slowed when he got to the part of her skin below her breast where the dagger had left a scar. He ran a faint caress over it and she shivered against him and m****d out.

Her perky breast hardened from the cold that engulfed them and they poked at him and his attention moved to them. His mouth dropped and circled over the tip, dragging it between his teeth and earning a m**n from her lips and her eyes shut. His tongue toyed with the hardened tip making her pant before moving to the next and applying the same tactics, bending her body to his will.

“I thought I’d never get to have this again. Have you this way?” she gasped out when he inserted his knee between her legs and she rubbed off on it.

“I’m glad you’re still here with me, my sweet darling,” Edward mumbled, closing his lips on hers.

Kailani quickly pushed his jacket off his body, and he tossed it onto the floor. He pulled off his shirt so that way he was naked from the waist up. Kailani notices a few scars on his body, realising the boundary he had pushed to get to her had left these marks on his skin.

Edwards saw her staring and his eyes also dropped to the scar on his skin before turning to look at her.

“Did it hurt?” she asked, her hand coming up to trail over the area of skin at his rib cage and upper chest while keeping her eyes on him.

He drew a sharp breath and nodded. “It did, but I knew it had to be done. I had to get to you.”

She leaned into him and kissed his chest over the area of his scar, and he m****d out. Her lips moved to his right nipple and her tongue teased it for a while before taking it between her lips to suck on it.

Edward gathered her into his arms and cuddled her against his body, feeling her softness against his.

She wanted them to stay this way for the rest of time.
