I felt a million pounds lighter as Romeo carried me off the plane, a grumbling Matteo following behind with Enzo’s help.

It would take time to heal the pain between us, but I felt hopeful that we could both be stitched back together.

Matteo loved me.

He loved me.

His love was precious, especially now that I understood fully what it cost him to give it.

We got to the bottom of the steps, and I let out a cry of joy when I saw Sienna waiting for us with Noodle on one side of her and my wheelchair on the other. Tears filled my eyes as Noodle started doing a happy dance. His entire body wiggled furiously, and he cried with excitement.

Romeo set me down in my wheelchair, and I held out my arms to Noodle. “Hi, baby. I missed you so much.” He gave me kisses, and I pressed my face into his fur. “I’m so sorry I left,” I murmured, my voice low and just for him. “It wasn’t because of you. You’re the bestest boy always.”

I pulled back, and he gave me a big kiss on the face. I hoped that meant I was forgiven. Noodle rested his head in my lap, tail wagging, and I looked up at Sienna. There were tears in her eyes as she threw her arms around me. “Fuck, are you okay?”

“Yeah.” I held her tight. “I am.”

“Do you want me to kill him? Because I will. I brought a gun.”

“I can hear you,” Matteo said dryly.

She pulled away enough to give her brother a dirty look.

“Hold off on the killing. For now, at least.” I patted Sienna’s hand. She was still scowling. “If you kill him, I won’t get the pleasure of seeing him grovel. And… my child won’t have a father.”

Her jaw dropped and she let out a scream as she jumped up and down. “You’re pregnant? Oh my God!” She pulled me into another hug and then hugged her brother, her anger momentarily forgotten. “I can’t believe it. I’m going to be an aunt.” Tears streamed down her face.

Her excitement warmed my heart, but I also experienced a flash of discomfort—that familiar feeling that said I shouldn’t get too happy, shouldn’t look forward to the future because it would bring only disappointment. “It’s still really early, so there’s no real guarantee that Baby will…” I trailed off, unwilling to speak the words.

“This baby will be absolutely perfect.” Her voice was so fierce I almost believed her.

Matteo gripped my shoulder, leaning heavily on Enzo for support as he kissed the top of my head. “Let’s go home, tesoro.”

I smiled and pressed my hand on top of his. “Yeah. Home.”
