Chapter 100
“Everyone, please welcome Millie Caldwell, our newest member in the department. Let’s take a moment to get to know her.”
Taking a moment to sip her water, Lainey then turned her attention to Millie.
Millie had her hair neatly pinned up, complemented by a light pink blouse beneath her white coat, exuding a calm and professional aura.
The team responded with applause, welcoming Millie warmly.
However, Yoel’s reaction was lukewarm at best. He shot her a brief, disapproving glance, muttering,” Does Dr. Lloyd think we need another decorative addition? One was more than sufficient.”
Before anyone could respond, Joanna walked in. Yoel’s slight headache escalated at her arrival.
One was already a handful, but adding another seemed excessive. After all, they had a fixed number of doctors, right?
Millie’s gaze met Joanna’s, serene and composed. Joanna’s expression, however, conveyed a different sentiment.
“Following department tradition, shouldn’t new members treat us to a meal?” someone proposed.
“Great idea! Let’s organize a dinner to welcome Millie!” others chimed in.
Noticing the enthusiasm around her, Millie responded with a soft smile, “Sounds good.”
“How about that Japanese restaurant across the street? A seafood dinner would be wonderful!” another suggested.
Seated at her desk, Millie listened as dinner plans unfolded. Suddenly, someone asked, “Dr. Lowell, would you like to join us?”
Joanna, seated across from Millie, responded curtly “No, thanks.” She seemed reluctant to socialize with the team outside of working hours.
It dawned on Millie how close her desk was to Joanna’s. Working face–to–face with the woman who was once her ex–husband’s unforgettable first love felt a bit awkward.
“The weather’s warming up. Perfect time for an iced drink,” Vanessa Xander, a young doctor, mused as she gazed out the window.
“Daydreaming won’t get the work done. You may not have a trust fund, but you’ve got plenty of first- world problems,” Joanna retorted sharply.
Vanessa laughed it off awkwardly and returned to her desk, quieting down.
Catching her eye, Millie wondered if Joanna could ever let go of her aloofness. Vanessa had merely shared a thought, yet Joanna’s response seemed overly harsh.
Just then, a knock sounded at the door. In stepped Hazel with a bright smile. “Dr. Caldwell, thank you!”

Millie looked up from the medical records Lainey had handed her, puzzled by Hazel’s sudden gratitude.
Before she could ponder further, several men dressed in black entered, each carrying elegantly packaged boxes.
Lainey frowned at the unexpected intrusion. After all she preferred a more orderly office environment.
The colleagues stood still, taken aback by the unfamiliar scene.
What was happening?
With a quick glance, Millie recognized the man leading the group. He was Gavin Jones, Layla’s bodyguard.
Millie rose from her seat, intrigued and confused. She had no clue why Gavin was present.
Gavin clarified, “Ms. Caldwell, these are tokens of appreciation from Madam Layla.”
With a nod to his team, he directed them to distribute the gifts.
Every desk soon had a substantial gift box placed upon it. Inside were custom–made pastries and the iced drinks Vanessa had mentioned earlier.
