Love and Chaos Series -
His Forbidden Mate Chapter 52
"The earlier I start my journey, the faster I will get back to Lurds," Edward told Xavier whom he had woken up in the early hours of the morning.
"If anyone had told me, we will have this conversation about you ever replaceing a maiden and getting married. I wouldn't have believed them," Xavier spoke with a grin on his face as they walked towards the study. They would spend the next hours to come deliberating on the proceeding of the wedding at Lurds before Edward would leave.
Edward had put in motion the plan for the wedding. The last task he had to do was meet the dressmaker for the robes the king and queen would wear at their wedding. He had done all he needed to do and was ready to return to Lurds, where his mate and lover waited for him.
He missed her. He missed her laughter, her smile, her naughtiness, her wildness. He missed the feel of her skin when pressed against his. He missed the touch of her hands on all parts of him. Her soft kisses fondled and caresses. He missed her surrender, and he missed surrendering to her. It was only a week without her and he couldn't wait to return to her.
"I once believed you preferred the company of men to maidens," Xavier spoke again, this time pulling him out of his thoughts into the reality where his brother was, and they stepped into the study.
Edward gave him a one-sided look. His brother always had the most insane thoughts. "Whatever made you say that?"
"Well, I never saw you with as many maidens as a prince would keep."
"You mean I wasn't a whore like you." he shot back.
Xavier gasped and faked a hurt expression. "Such a low blow coming from you, brother. And no, I meant you were always with your friend Dyan for the longest of time and after his death, you just withdrew and the only maiden you showed affection for was Mia." "I mingled with a few maidens in the past, but withdrew after Dyan's death and I don't prefer the companies of men. I always appreciated the beauty of maidens. I had a belief Dyan had a thing for you when he yet lived. But he told me he admired you a lot and it might show off as more, but it wasn't. I have loved this girl since I was but fifteen summers old and I have not stopped since then. She's my mate and the one I want to spend the rest of my existence with. It can't get any better than this." Xavier gave him a goofy grin that made him roll his eyes. "Now you know how it feels when I gush about Mia."
"While I don't doubt the fact that you love her, you have a keen interest in exaggeration." Edward pointed out, making Xavier grumble as he opened the study door and stepped in.
"It's not exaggerating if it's true. We've been through a lot that most people wouldn't survive or even replace happiness after. Yet I love her more than I did yesterday and she loves me too."
The royal family had suffered two losses of their unborn children to the God of death in the last two years. The first was hard and the second, which was over six months ago, was harder. Despite this, they had remained strong, still loving, and hopeful. Their love story and how they still had each other's back shook the kingdom and left many in awe. It had to be love, and Edward was a firm believer in that love.
"Yes, brother, it's the truth, but the queen does a better job of telling it than you do."
While Edward yet spoke, he felt a hard clench in his heart and he stopped moving, making Xavier stop as well. He turned to look at him with a raised brow, but said nothing. He waited for the pain to subside, but the longer he waited, the excruciating it became and his eyes shut.
These were feeling he got when someone he held dear was in trouble, including his father, his brother, the queen and Kailani and seeing that the three former were well, it only meant one thing. Something bad was happening to Kailani in Lurds. His heart hammered heavily against his chest at the actualisation of the threat Kailani could be facing in Lurds. His eyes stayed shut as he tried using his magic to replace out what exactly was happening to her.
"Edward?" Xavier called out, but he couldn't reply. He couldn't afford the distraction from his aim.
He mumbled the magical chant underneath his breath and his eyes opened void of its blue orb and rather a complete silver, shiny and terrifying.
The mark Kailani had left on his skin burnt him and he groaned out. He knew she was in danger and her life was on the line.
He blinked and gasped out as he returned to the realm of the physical and his eyes returned to their normal colour. "I have to go," he said, taking a step back.
"What's wrong?"
"Kailani is in danger and I need to go," he answered, becoming weary as well.
"What are you going to do now?" Xavier asked, looking equally worried. "You're very far from Lurds. There's no way you would get there in time."
Xavier was right, Lurds was a few days' journey from the capital.
He knew he wouldn't make it there on time if he boarded the fastest carriage in the capital. He would still be too late.
He could, however, reach Lurds faster using another means. His magic. He made a promise to Kailani to not use his magic to push any more boundaries. He had made the promise, intending to keep it, but now this was the only way he could reach her and ensure that she was safe and he had to take it. Pushing the boundaries to teleport him from the capital over to Lurds within a moment was unsafe and dangerous, but he was certain Kailani would die if he didn't.
"I need to go to her. She needs me," he answered, rubbing his hands together before pushing them forward, and he began mumbling something under his breath.
Xavier stood quietly and watch and the longer he made the incantation the higher his pitch got and soon he stopped speaking.
Xavier who noticed blood trickling down his nose, spoke up in fear, "Edward, this seems dangerous and you're bleeding." His tone came off worried, but Edward didn't answer him.
He couldn't and he didn't stop despite the pain and the weakness the spell caused him. He had to succeed. He had to rip the demarcating portal open and step through.
Xavier didn't have magic, and if he did, he didn't know how to use it as Edward did, but he had been told magic flowed through his veins and perhaps that magic could help his brother here and now. He took hold of Edward's hands and he dragged a sharp breath, feeling the impact of the touch.
Edward gasped as well but did not stop the spell and in the next second, a portal opened to him. He seized his incantation and released Xavier's hand, moving towards the portal.
He noticed Xavier coming along, and he stopped and turned to him.
"What are you doing?"
"Coming with you to Lurds, as you can see."
"You can't. The kingdom needs you here. Mia needs you here, and she will not forgive me if something bad happens to you."
Xavier took hold of his hand, stopping him from moving. "I am the older one. I am the one to protect you. And you're heading to a dangerous zone and I can't let you go alone." Edward smiled. "I am not a child. I will be fine. I promise I will be fine."
Xavier didn't look convinced, but he had no choice but to let him go. "Fine, go save your mate, but please be careful."
Edward nodded, "I will do that." he stepped into the portal and it closed, leaving Xavier all alone in the study.
