Love and Chaos Series -
The Alpha King’s Ugly Bride Chapter 15
Learning that her husband had a mistress shouldn't have come as a surprise. It's been a month since they got married and in those times, he had only been in her bedroom a few times. The first was on their wedding night and he didn't share her bed and after that
was today when he came in to inform her about the banquet. Yet, knowing the truth surprised her.
He had a mistress, a fairer, more radiant and elegant. Mia had to admit she felt insecure standing before Zara. She had taken notice of the fair and proud lady earlier while they spoke and she was a walking perfection. Discovering she was her husband's mistress made sense. He longed for the best, and she was his best.
She remembered how Zara spoke about two people loving each other and not being seen as fit by society. At first, it was more like a parable, but after being told who she was, she knew she spoke about the alpha king.
The king had a thing for fair and beautiful, and she was not that. She was not the fair bride he wanted and in the last few weeks; she had told herself he was so cold towards her because she was a last-minute resort and an ugly replacement. And she had to cling to that as his reason for being cold towards her, but learning about Zara Michel now told her it was never because of her at all.
Xavier was cold towards her because he had and loved another.
If she was honest, she'd admit she knew there was someone else, but meeting her the way she did, totally unprepared, didn't help.
It was enough that the people of this kingdom valued her less because of her look, and now she had to be reminded of it whenever she saw Xavier from now on.
She wanted to yell and throw a punch, but she couldn't. This was a miserable life and hers to live.
"The wine, my queen!" Lydia handed the cup of wine over to her as she stepped out of the washroom where she had dried off the wine stain on her robe.
She took the cup from her and emptied the content into her mouth at a go. She handed the cup over to Lydia, who watched her with mouth ajar. If she was going to make it through the night as the perfect queen, she needed what would drown her anger. Her head remain tall as she shifted through the crowd in search of her husband, the alpha king, and nodded firmly at the few crowds that greeted and congratulated her. Finally, she came to stand beside him and, taking notice of her, he smiled and possessively wrapped his arms around her. Her body crawled.
At first, she wanted to be at her best behaviour throughout the night, but now she just wanted the night to end.
"Here she is!" he announces, to alpha Chike and Luna Blair standing before him.
Mia recognised them. They were the alpha and Luna of the capital and, according to reports; he was the alpha's representative in the capital city of Wahala.
She gingerly made her way towards them, bowing when she got close.
"It's nice to see you today, my queen." He and his Luna took a bow.
"And you too, Alpha Chike."
"I heard you're an acute reader," Blair said, with an interest in her eyes.
Mia nodded, "Yes, I am."
"That's wonderful. The alpha king was just telling us about his wife, who has a fondness for books." Blair added.
Mia glanced up at the Alpha king but saw his gaze had travelled far away to the corner of the hall, stunned. She immediately knew what he had seen to look so awestruck, more of who.
She had already seen Zara, and she was beautiful, but seeing how affected the alpha king was at the sight of her didn't help.
She tore her gaze from him and returned to the couples before her, nodding her head in affirmation, "Books are great." She sounded breathless. "They are like a whole new world and I love getting lost in them."
"Perhaps we too shall get a bookshelf soon." Blair beamed, peeking up at her husband.
Xavier unwrapped his hand from around her waist, and Mia glanced up and saw him disoriented. That was the first.
He cleared his throat. "Can you excuse me for just a minute?" Then he gazed down at Mia. The effect his lover had on him seemed surreal and raw emotions showed on his face. "I've got to go," he announced and stepped away from them and soon disappeared into the crowd of guests.
"We will leave you to mingle with the rest of the guests, my queen, and we will do the same," Chike said with a small smile before guarding his wife away from her presence.
Her hand balled into a fist and she could swear her eyes flared, but she hoped no one would see it. She had been at her best behaviour tonight at his request, but he couldn't even do the same!
Ignoring the better sense in her head, which told her to carry on with being the good queen for the night, she followed the scent of the alpha king. Everyone gathered seemed preoccupied with each other and no one paid her much mind, and she took that to her advantage. She hurried towards the direction the scent lingered and soon she saw him. She stayed quiet and watched as he took a turn that lead to a narrow hallway in the Palace where no one was. Mia followed, but made sure she remained unseen. She was better than this, but she wanted to confirm her suspicion that he came to see his lover.
Not so long after, Zara stepped out of the shadow with a smile on her face. He smiled back, and it looked too good that it hurt Mia's heart to see it. He reached for her and wrapped his arms around her waist, hauling her affectionately against himself. His hand caressed her face, trailing every fine line thereon with ease.
"I've missed you," he let out, his voice bearing testaments to his words.
"I missed you too." she sealed their lips, taking possession of it. They pulled away to catch their breath, and she caressed his face, her fingers trailed over his beards and her smile broadened.
"I want to hold you like this forever," he vowed. "My queen."
She chuckles, "Queen, uh?"
"You've always been my queen, and soon you will be the queen."
Disbelief lingered in her blue eyes. "Your plan is already in place? You're going to get rid of her?"
He grinned, and without answering, he took her lips for a passionate kiss.
She placed her head against his, her eyes shuttering. "I can't wait for the day I get to have you all to myself before the world and no longer have to hide in the shadows." "Soon, sweetheart, soon," he vowed.
