The Alpha King’s Ugly Bride Chapter 31
Mia and Xavier stepped out together as king and queen today. This wasn't their first official outing as couples. They have done a few in the past. This, however, was their attempt to present themselves as a happy couple to the rest of the kingdom. They were currently at the sporting arena where over a hundred people sat watching the two men wrestle with each other in the ring. Two men beating the shit out of each other was part of entertainment for the cheering crowd. Entertainment in Wahala could come as art, music, drama and sometimes sweaty wrestling.
Mia didn't really like the gruesome fight just to show off strength. Growing up, her mistress taught her that violence was an inescapable trait of every werewolf. Her father, however, disagreed with it. He was the most peaceful and peace-seeking man Mia ever knew, and it was easy to believe him.
"We choose our own fate. We decide who we want to be." he would always say.
People called him weak, but he never paid mind to that. He was true to himself, and that was what mattered.
During her first shift as a werewolf over a year ago, her sister and father made sure her shift, although painful, went with no one getting hurt. Since then, she had stayed in control during the full moon. Most times in the comfort of the Asika territories. Violence was unnecessary and did not correlate with one's nature. So she didn't understand how anyone could watch and enjoy the show happening in the arena.
Xavier on the other hand, didn't look bothered. This was one time he got to sit in silence and not worry about duties. He loved how the people seated at the arena had their attention on those in the ring rather than on him. This didn't always happen, so when it did, he'd gladly take advantage of it.
The heftier wrestler in the ring smashed his fist into the other's jaw, sending him off his feet. The man landed hard on the floor with blood gushing out of his mouth.
Mia gasped and covered her mouth, and Xavier glanced at her. His green eyes were curious about the horrified look hers had. It was the look that made those in the arena out as if they were cold blooded monsters
"You don't like the fight." it wasn't a question. He could read from her face that she didn't.
"I never understood senseless violence in the name of entertainment. He could end up in a terrible shape." She said.
"He would end up in a terrible shape." he corrected, "That's what makes it great and the reason it draws so many people in." a smug smile appeared on his face.
"I'm not surprised by the response coming from you," she murmured, her voice barely audible among the much noise at the arena.
He heard, but if he took offence at her words, his voice didn't show it. "Don't you think challenging fate and not underestimating oneself is a good thing?"
She turned and locked gaze with him, and for a moment she forgot to breathe.
Wrapping her claws around her sanity, she returned to reality. "I'm sorry, I didn't get the moral lesson you got." she tore her eyes away from him. She didn't want to get lost in his enchanting gaze more than she already had. "What would be your ideal entertainment, then? A man reading a book?" he asked, a little humour in his voice.
"A man or woman on an adventure, facing the odds and coming out with head standing tall, would be one show I'd like to watch."
"That's what this fight is about, except the bigger man always wins."
Mia wanted to say something in response to his last words when she noticed a guard approaching.
He had a guard uniform, but the long white cape on his armour made him stand out from the others. He wasn't the King's guard, and Mia was certain she had seen that uniform before. She wondered where.
"A message came for you, my queen. It's from our father, the alpha of alphas." the guard coming to stand before Mia and the alpha king proclaimed, bowing his head in obeisance.
Xavier stretched his hand out to accept the letter the guard held in his hand. He heard when the guard said the letter came for the queen, but he would be a fool to let Robb play a fast one on him. The guard handed the letter to him despite the sceptical look that flashed over his face. The guard who brought in the message bowed his head and left immediately after.
The letter's arrival served as Xavier's cue to leave. His happy hour had ended faster than it should, faster than he wanted. Robb had that effect. He took Mia's hand, helped her up, and led her out of the arena. The King's guards followed behind them. The letter seemed important and the crowd's noise would have made it difficult for him to concentrate.
Mia didn't fancy that he had collected the letter on her behalf, but he didn't look like he would give it to her, even if she asked nicely. Xavier's dislike for his father most times ruled his sense of reasoning. It also turned him into an a*****e who wanted to control everything around him even without realising it.
Once out, Xavier broke the seal and read through the letter. What he read must have triggered him because his right hand balled into a fist and the left clenched tightly around the letter so that it folded into a ball.
"What does it say?" Mia asked. When he didn't answer, she reached forward and took the letter from his grasp.
She glanced through to read.
Greetings, Queen Mia,
This is a formal invitation to you from the alpha of alphas, our father. He would head out from tomorrow to visit one of the three sites of the capital 3. This letter comes as an invitation to join him on this visit. We'll leave at the tenth hour. Signed AOA, Robb Ainsworth.
