Love beyond the mask ( Whitney ) -
Chapter 330
Ludwik scoffed, "You think I believe you? I just quickly combed through the north side and dragged Mr. Percy over here for a little 'chat"."
He gave her a cold glance, "He denied it, said the kidnapping had nothing to do with settling personal scores with you. That's when I knew there was more to this."
"I checked the security footage from around the bridal boutique an hour before and after. I saw a black van leaving, and ten minutes later, another SUV headed south."
Maybe it was intuition, betting that this woman wouldn't harm the kids.
Ludwik followed the SUV's trail on the cameras to the south side, quickly deployed a K-9 unit, and found his son's scent.
Caught the kidnapper completely off guard.
Whitney was slightly taken aback. Ludwik had all these resources at his disposal, and the kidnapper stood no chance against him!
But he just wouldn't pin any suspicions on Elaine.
It seemed Elaine's deceitful facade hadn't been exposed in front of him yet.
No rush, Whitney thought. She would make this jerk see the woman's true colors step by step.
Then she'd leave with her two sons, never to look back.
Whitney couldn't help but provoke him, "Since you've cleared Mr. Percy and me from the kidnapping, who do you think is after your son? Maybe it's time to dig deeper, see if your precious Elaine has anything to do with it." "Like I need you to tell me that? One of the kidnappers got away, and I'm scouring the city for him. Whoever hurt my son will pay a thousandfold!"
"...Please, you're clueless, the real culprit is sleeping right by your side."
Whitney rolled her eyes.
Ludwik arrogantly took her hand, "My son, I'm more worried than you! Dream on if you think you can take him from me."
Oh, I already have, and you don't even know it.
Whitney simply walked past him, "Move, I want to see my son."
"...Am I not as good-looking as my son?" Ludwik frowned, baffled by her audacity, "What do you mean 'your son'? Have you ever taken care of him for even a day? Stay right there."
The only response he got was the sound of her firmly closing the door behind her.
Ludwik's face darkened as he heard Danny sweetly call out for his mommy inside, his frustration boiling over.
What kind of son had he raised? Had she ever fed you?
Inside the room, Danny was sitting up in bed, getting fluids through an IV. As Whitney approached, he hugged her tightly.
"Feeling better, Danny?"
"I'm okay, just some scratches. Nothing compared to what Sammy's going through, mommy...
Did you just go next door to confront Elaine? I saw them carrying her out."
Danny couldn't hide his glee, but then frowned, "But didn't you tell us to bide our time, that revenge is a dish best served cold? Why'd you lose your cool?" "I'm not a saint; why should I wait?
She messed with my son; I had to let her have a taste of her own medicine. Why use words when actions speak louder?"
"...Why do I get the feeling I have a cunning mommy?"
"But you're going to get in trouble with daddy, I heard you two arguing."
"I won if that's any consolation. Besides, he and I are nothing to each other; there's no feelings to hurt." Whitney's voice was cold and detached.
Danny sighed, wondering if his mom had really fallen out of love with his dad. He couldn't believe it.
It was all his dad's fault for breaking her heart. No, he had to make his mom fall for his dad again.
"...But maybe it's easier to make dad fall back in love with mom."
Pondering over this, Danny apologized to his mom for not being upfront earlier, leading to Elaine's kidnapping attempt.
"Don't blame yourself, mommy. We just didn't want to scare you, hoping to surprise you at the right moment..."
"Silly baby, this is the perfect moment. In a way, this misfortune has been a blessing." Whitney spoke tenderly.
Knowing she couldn't stay long without raising Ludwik's suspicions, Whitney had to say goodbye, "I might secretly transfer Sammy to another hospital tomorrow. For now, you'll have to stay by his side. If you miss me, just call." After giving Danny a new smartwatch, Whitney left the room. Ludwik was still waiting outside, leaning against the wall, smoking nonchalantly yet looking irresistibly suave.
As soon as she appeared, he jealously asked, "What were you whispering about with Danny? Don't even think about brainwashing him; he loves his father." "...How childish."
Whitney sneered, "My "brainwashing' skills are nowhere near Elaine's."
Ludwik felt like he was being mocked indirectly, his handsome face darkening, "Spare me your sarcasm. You're a terrible mother; stay away from Danny before you rub off on him!"
"Yeah, because Danny's been 'tainted' for three years, no wonder he's got a temper."
"...," Ludwik took a deep breath, her sharp tongue cutting deep.
He glanced at her lips, then, in a moment of frustration, blurted out, "If you're so keen on winning this verbal spar, maybe I should remind you of how you got that scar on your lip from our night in Banyan City!" Whitney stared back, infuriated by his audacity.
She stormed off, while Ludwik flicked his cigarette away, watching her leave with a mix of anger and something dangerously akin to desire.
Elaine, returning from the hospital, saw this exchange, expecting Ludwik to defend her honor as he used to. But things had changed; he didn't reprimand Whitney and even allowed her to visit Danny. They seemed to be bickering about the kids, but to Elaine, it sounded more like they were flirting outrageously.
And there he was, throwing flirty jabs at that witch!
Elaine clenched her fists so tight she thought she might explode with fury, overwhelmed by a sense of impending doom. She felt Ludwik slipping through her fingers.
The kidnapping hadn't taken out that little devil as she'd hoped, but instead led Whitney straight to the truth.
Things were going from bad to worse. Now, all her hopes were pinned on Keegan's case. If Whitney couldn't overturn the verdict, she'd be charged with defamation and thrown behind bars! Then, Elaine would finally have her sweet revenge!
