Chapter 448 Mislead Whom

Elspeth had never seen Jethro looking so lost before, so she couldn't help feeling incredibly guilty. But, at the same time, she was also aware that she could not allow him to overthink the issue.

"Of course not. You are an employee at my company. So, if something were to happen, it would also be on my head."

It was the perfect answer-professional and polite. There was absolutely nothing wrong with her response. Naturally, Jethro could not replace the answer he desired either.

"Is that all?"

She snorted at his inquiry. Although her voice was unchanged, her attitude became cold and indifferent. "Didn't I make myself clear enough just now? I will not fall in love with you, so you should give up on that hope as soon as possible."

Jethro was so drunk that he could barely stand straight. As a result, he staggered unsteadily as he leaned against the door frame. A trace of sorrow entered his voice as he lamented, "I know it's impossible for you to fall in love with me, but I wanted to try anyway."

"Why would you want to do something so futile?"

She simply could not understand him. An ordinary person would have seriously reflected on whether their behavior was worth the effort after being rejected by the same person repeatedly. Even if they wanted to persist in their actions, they generally gave up due to the previous rejections.

Yet, he wasn't anything like that. Instead, he seemed to believe that he would have a chance as long as he could break through all the obstacles standing before him.

"I don't know, but I really like you. I have liked you for so many years."

"Have you ever thought that your feelings for me might not be what you consider love?"

Jethro gave her a sad look, and then he smiled. "Even if you don't have feelings for me, you shouldn't say things like that to hurt my feelings."

Those words were too hurtful. They practically negated all his efforts right at the source.

"Alright. I won't say anything to hurt you again."

Then, Elspeth turned around to return to her room so that she could change into something more presentable and send him home. Contrary to her expectations, she had just placed one foot in her house when the drunken man took it as an invitation to follow into the house. Moreover, he immediately collapsed on the couch as soon as he entered her home.

"What are you doing? Don't you dare tell me that you're planning to sleep here?"

Alas, when she noticed that he was gradually losing consciousness, she suddenly had an ominous premonition.

He seemed sure that she would not kick him out of her house, so he closed his eyes and leaned back into the couch with nary a care in the world.

"No, you really can't stay here!" she exclaimed frantically.

She even rushed over and tried to drag him off the couch. To her surprise, although he was utterly wasted, he still had the sense of mind to grab onto the couch desperately. He practically glued himself to the couch and refused to move.

On the contrary, she gradually lost her grip on him, which caused her to lose her balance and collapse on top of him.

"Are you throwing yourself into my arms?" Jethro glanced at the disheveled person in his arms with a teasing grin as he spoke with his alcohol-ladened breath. He was so drunk that it affected his speech. Ever the words he uttered were slurred and indistinct.

"What do you mean by throwing myself into your arms? I simply slipped and fell."

Then, she quickly climbed to her feet. Unfortunately, before she could steady herself, she was dragged back into his embrace.

"Don't move. Let me hold you for a while."

His voice carried a hint of coquettishness, which sounded highly irresistible.

Nevertheless, she knew without a doubt that such actions were wrong and unacceptable. That being the case, she hastily scrambled away from his arms.

"Get off my couch right now while you are still conscious."

When he saw that his plans had fallen through, he decided to act shamelessly instead. Hence, he leaned back into the couch, made himself comfortable, and prepared to sleep. "You can't sleep at my house."

Elspeth was starting to panic at this point. If Callum suddenly decided to visit her tomorrow and happened to witness this scene, he would surely tear them both apart.

After all, the current situation was just simply outrageous.

Jethro had already closed his eyes and pretended to have fallen asleep, uncaring of the consequences his actions could cause.

He did not know how long it had been, but suddenly, the person standing beside him strode away. Then, just when he thought that Elspeth was planning a different method to kick him out, he felt a blanket being draped over him. Moreover, she carefully tucked the blanket around him.

"I'm warning you. You better be gone by the time I wake up tomorrow."

He secretly complained to himself that she was heartless.

After Elspeth finished covering Jethro with a blanket, she returned to her room to sleep.

When Elspeth woke up the next day, she deliberately took a peek at the situation downstairs. He had also folded the blanket on the couch neatly and evenly.

It looks like he's gone...

"Have you woken up, Elspeth? If you're awake, you should come downstairs for breakfast. I've made your favorite thick toast with egg."

A head suddenly stuck out of the kitchen, and then Jethro waved at her with a smile and a spatula in his hand.

She was rendered speechless. Why has the situation gone from bad to worse?

"Didn't I ask you to leave my house?"

He lowered his head, looking slightly aggrieved. "It's all because you always skip breakfast every day. I noticed that you eat nothing but bread every day. So, I thought I'd make you some breakfast before I leave to make you eat a little more."

The words Jethro spoke might have sounded like he was doing her kindness, but it was a pity that she did not need such service.

Be that as it may, he was already halfway through making breakfast. No matter how it looked, it really seemed inappropriate to drive him away at this moment.

She slapped her forehead in resignation. "You have to leave immediately after breakfast."

When he heard that she was extending his time limit, he immediately broke out into a grin. "Okay!"

Thus, what she expected was to be a quiet morning instantaneously turned into a morning where two people shared breakfast together.

She lost all her appetite just thinking about the sticky situation in front of her. As time passed, she couldn't help but feel the growing anxiety in her heart. Her mind kept sending her warning bells as it screamed that Callum would stop by anytime soon.

"Is my cooking not good? Why aren't you eating?" Jethro raised his head and looked at the warm soy milk that was turning cold in her bowl. The sight made him feel slightly doubtful.

"No." Elspeth took a symbolic bite of the toast. The taste was exquisite indeed. Unfortunately, she was not in the mood to eat at the moment.

After she hastily ate her breakfast, he voluntarily assumed the chore of washing the dishes. Eventually, she could only watch him working happily in the kitchen while she was powerless to do anything about the situation.

All of a sudden, there was a knock on the door. The alarm bells in her heart immediately started blaring loudly, shrieking that her circumstances were about to go straight to Hell.

I'm doomed! That's probably Callum! If Callum sees that Jethro stayed overnight at my house and that we even shared breakfast together... There will probably be a massive catastrophe! Should I pretend that there's nobody at home?

Just as she was panicking about how to deal with the situation, she heard the sound of the lock clicking open with a key.

Oh! It's just the housekeeping lady.

She finally breathed a sigh of relief when she saw the familiar face at the door.

She had given a copy of the keys to the housekeeping lady for the sake of convenience.

"Miss Lynwood, should I do the usual cleaning today?"

Elspeth nodded and forced a smile on her face. "Yes, please."

The housekeeping lady entered the house to clean. Then, Elspeth glanced at Jethro in the kitchen and urged, "Hurry up and leave, lest you cause a misunderstanding."

"Make who misunderstand?" A cold voice came from the door. She jerked her head stiffly, just in time to see Callum standing at the door with a sneer that seemed to speak volumes on his face.

It seemed that she was now in the eye of the storm.
