Chapter 138
Abigail would be especially hard to deal with. After all, Sebastian was her only son, She would definitely stop at nothing to get her son out of trouble.
Stella chuckled dismissively when she heard what Madelyn said.
“Any lawyer can be bribed, but not Tristan.”
“You trust him that much?” Madelyn was skeptical.
Having suffered a major loss in her previous life, she was now more cautious with people,
Stella said, “It’s not about me trusting him. It’s about him protecting his career. How else do you think he has
maintained an undefeated record throughout the years?”
Madelyn nodded, realizing she had a point.
Tristan had never lost a case, and if he were to be bribed by Robert and Abigail, not only would Stella not let him off, but it would also ruin his reputation.
From Stella’s tone, Madelyn could tell that Stella wouldn’t let things slide easily this time.
At noon, Madelyn ordered a light lunch for Stella.
On her way downstairs, the elevator stopped on the third floor and opened. She immediately noticed a young girl
sitting on a chair in the hallway, holding a doll.
Just before the elevator doors closed, Madelyn instinctively blocked them from closing shut and stepped out.
It was Serena sitting on the chair. When she saw Madelyn, her eyes narrowed into crescents as she smiled, melting Madelyn’s heart in an instant.
“Mommy,” Serena called out softly, making Madelyn’s heart clench.
Madelyn instinctively looked around. Melinda was nowhere to be seen, so she turned her head back and pointed at herself.
“Were you calling for me?”
“Mommy, I want to be carried.”
Serena placed her doll beside her and stretched her arms.
out.
Madelyn stepped forward to pick her up. Serena was soft and had a pleasant milky scent.
Madelyn looked into the ward.
When she didn’t see Melinda, she asked, “Are you here alone?”
Serena nodded.
“Yeah. Mommy went to work.”

“Then why did you call me Mommy just now?”
Madelyn was confused.
The first time they met, Serena had also called her Mommy.
At the time, Melinda was also there, so Madelyn had assumed she was calling Melinda, but now…
Serena silently looked at her with large, confused eyes and didn’t explain herself. Madelyn remembered that Melindal had said Serena was abandoned, so she couldn’t help but feel pity for the girl.
The nurse who was in charge of watching Serena
approached and, upon seeing Madelyn, greeted her respectfully.
“Mrs. Miller, this child calls everyone Mommy. Please don’t take her seriously.”
“Oh, I see.”
Madelyn felt slightly disappointed but more sympathetic toward Serena when she heard the nurse’s words.
The nurse took Serena from her.
“Sweetheart, we need to give you your injection. Are you scared?”
“Nope!” Serena declared in a resolute tone.
Ever since Serena’s medical expenses were no longer an
issue, the hospital had been treating the mother and
daughter much better, especially when it was Madelyn who gave them support.
Madelyn was about to leave when Melinda returned just in time to catch sight of her.
Melinda greeted Madelyn respectfully, “Ms. Garcia.”
“Are you working?”
“Yes. I need to.”
Melinda nodded.
Madelyn subconsciously glanced at the ward, knowing Serena needed care the most now.
Noticing her concern, Melinda said, “Ever since you helped us, the hospital has been very kind to us. I work during meal times in the cafeteria, and the work is easy with short hours.”
Her tone was full of gratitude as she spoke.
Madelyn inclined her head.
“You have it rough. Don’t overwork yourself. Take care of your health.”
“Thank you, Ms. Garcia. I will repay you as soon as possible!”
Madelyn was surprised to hear Melinda say that she wanted to pay back the money. However, upon seeing Melinda’s determined expression, Madelyn decided not to say anything.
