“I see.” The woman smiled. “It’s just seven thousand five hundred, right?”

The police officer nodded. “Yes.”

The woman’s smile was reassuring as she declared, “Let me handle this.”

Half an hour later, Vicky stepped out of the police station with the woman. “Miss Jandrell, thank you forpaying on my behalf,” she spoke. “I will pay you back.”

The woman did not refuse her offer and said, “I’m not in urgent need of that money, so you can pay meback whenever you want.”

Vicky studied her face and asked, “Miss Jandrell, are you here on purpose to help me?”

The smile on the woman’s face froze, and she feigned confusion. “What?”

“You came here for me, didn’t you, Miss Jandrell?” Vicky stared into her eyes. “It’s far too much of acoincidence if you keep appearing before me whenever I need help.”

She could consider it a coincidence for being helped once or twice, but this was the third time.

Seeing through Vicky’s thoughts, the woman softly sighed and confessed, “Yes, I was specifically sentfor you, Ms. Shaw. My employer learned that you needed help, so he sent me to assist you.”

Vicky’s expression darkened slightly. “Do I know this gentleman?”

The woman shook her head. “I’m sorry. I’m not sure about that either. I am simply following his ordersto carry out the task. If you have any questions, it’d be best to ask him.”

After returning home, Vicky found the business card she received before. After hesitating for a fewseconds, she decided to make the call.

The waiting sound seemed to stretch indefinitely. However, the call was eventually met with a dial tone,indicating that it had been hung up, which was later followed by a text message to Vicky’s phone.

[Do you need something?]

Thinking that the person might not be able to answer calls, Vicky replied with a text. [Thank you forhelping me again. I’ll pay the money you lent me as soon as possible.)

After about 20 minutes, a reply finally came. [You’re being targeted. You won’t be able to work normallyfor a while.

This money means nothing to me, so you don’t need to worry about it.]

Vicky’s fingers hesitated. [How do you know about my situation?]

[Is that strange?]

[Why are you helping me?] She added.

[I have my reasons for doing so. Don’t worry; I’m not a do- gooder who likes to help others.]

[What’s your purpose in helping me, then?]

After a long pause, a response finally came from the other side. [I can’t tell you that for now. However,you don’t have to worry-l won’t force you to do anything and I won’t harm you]

Vicky looked at the message in front of her and was momentarily lost in thought.

In response to her prolonged silence, another message came through. [Ms. Shaw, considering yourcurrent situation, you should be well aware that a dead end awaits you.]

Vicky’s fingers tightened around her phone until her knuckles turned pale.

Tyler was closing in, and without the support of the Shaw family and Harvey, she had no room to resistand was left to be at the mercy of others.

Vicky had to admit that she was in a desperate state and resented Tyler for putting her in such aposition.

‘I’m at the end of my rope, so what else do I have to lose?’ she thought.

With this in mind, Vicky replied. [Can you help me, sir?]

[Of course.]

[What do you want me to do?] She typed.
