Chapter twenty-one: Let Me In

Elena

The air around us was silent, Bernard was still in his wolf form, looking in the direction where the wolves ran off. I felt my heart beat slowly returning to normal as the adrenaline gradually began to leave my body. It was still raining but it had lightning now and the thunder had calmed. I whipped away some of the mud that had splattered onto my face. I didn’t dare to look towards his direction because I knew that his wolf was in control and he was still in active threat mode. I moved to where my duffle bag was laying on the ground and shouldered it. As I turned around to leave, I saw his naked human form standing in front of me. I shrieked and turned around, my cheek heating at the sight of him.

I was tempted to turn back and look at him again because the little glimpse I caught was not enough for me, I wanted to see more. I scolded myself internally, I wasn’t supposed to be thinking of him in that

way.

“He is your mate.” My inner voice tried to reason with me, I shook my head. He may have been my mate but he also belonged to another. I had to remember a very important fact.

“You can turn around now.” His voice rang in my ears. I turned around slowly and found him buttoning his shirt that he didn’t have when he arrived here. I looked at him, completely confused.

“We kept changing clothes throughout the woods for situations like this.” He said, even under the darkness of the night, I can still see the glow behind his forest green eye.

Our vision as a wolf only strengthened during the night so seeing him was not the problem. It was seeing him without my heart accelerating to dangerous speed was the problem. He as staring at me, his gaze was heated but not in a sexual way. It was like he was holding back his anger. I didn’t dare to say anything because I didn’t know if what I would say might set him off or not.

He opened his mouth but then closed it immediately afterwards. I stood there staring at him, moving backwards. A moment ago, I had been crying that I wouldn’t be able to see him, feel him or hear his voice and now he is in front of me, I didn’t know what to do. The thunder rumbled, startling me a bit. His gaze shifted from my face to the bag that was on my shoulder. A wave of shame hit me as I felt like I had been caught red-headed and guilt settled over my heart weighing it down with its heaviness. I had been so sure of my decision to leave but when I saw the flash of hurt cross his features, I knew I had been wrong. Hurting him was the last thing I had wanted to do.

“Let us go back to the house.” He turned away from me and started walking towards the direction of his Pack. I moved with him as we made our way back to the mansion. We walked a few meters in awkward silence. The only sound that could be heard was the rain dropping from above and the low rumble of the thunder in the distance.

1 kept stealing a glance at him, trying to gauge his current emotional state. Even though I had only known him less than a week, I knew that he was not the kind of man to wear his emotion on his face. He kept his true inner feeling to himself.

Thank you.” My voice came out as I whispered. I was trying to test the water to see if he was approachable or if he needed some time. He grunted in response and just continued to walk. I struggled to keep up with his pace, for every step he took, I had to take two. I would have asked him to slow down but seeing as how he just responded to me, I realized that silence is the best answer. I would just deal with it.

I wasn’t watching where I was going and suddenly I found myself tripping over a root and then I fell. Before my face could plumb into the mud, he reached behind me and caught me in his arms. We stood like that for a little while awkwardly until he was shocked back to reality by the thunder. He helped me settled on my feet and started walking again.

“Bernard, wait!” I called to him, he stopped and turned around slowly. His eyes were emotionless and gave nothing away but I could tell that he was bothered about something.

“What is it, Elena?” He sounded so fed up with me. It hurt my heart a little that he was speaking to me in such a tone.

“Are you angry with me?” I asked but he let out a humorless laugh and then turned away from me as he continued walking. I ran up to him and grabbed his arms from behind. I forced him to stop and took the chance to go and stand in his front. The ram was cold on my skin and mud was seeping into place they

should never be in.

“Bernard. I called as I looked into his eyes.

“I know you are angry, I can see it in your eyes.” I said to him.

*So, if you can see it, then why are you asking me such a s**d question, Elena?” He said, exasperatedly.

“Now, move. The rain is only going to get harder and you need to get warm.” He muttered.

*I am sorry, I am sorry for hurting you. I didn’t mean to.” I blurted out. His eyes narrowed at me.

“And why were you running away?” I opened my mouth, ready to tell him everything but I quickly clamped it shut. This is not something that I could discuss with him, no matter how badly I wanted to, my true identity had to remain hidden.

“Right, another thing that you are planning to hide from me.” He said as he walked around me and

continued his move towards the mansion.

“I thought I was doing what is best for both of us.” He spun around so quickly and gave me whiplash. He walked up to me and stared at me with blazing eyes. His chest was rising and failing in deep and labored

breaths.

“You don’t get to decide for me, Elena.” He seethed.

“You don’t get to decide what is best for me and what is not. Your leaving was the f**t thing from being the best for me. What you did was careless and selfish.” I hung my head in shame. His anger was justifiable and I had no real leg to stand on that at the moment.

“I had wolves who were meant to be on guard scouring these woods looking for you, Elena. You nearly gave me a heart attack when I couldn’t replace you. You put my wolf through hell and myself as well.” He muttered.

“I am sorry.” I whispered.

“I am tired of the constant tiptoeing that you do, Elena.” He cupped my face and forced me to look at him.

“I know you are lying about your amnesia. You don’t really have that and I know you are running from something from where you came from. I wanted to trust you but how can I do that when I barely know you?” My heart hammered inside my chest, his touch was like ecstasy and I was about to have an overdose. I enjoyed the feeling of his skin against mine.

Goodness, this mate pull, as the days passed by, it got stronger between us. It was getting harder to fight off my desire and impulses. I should have stepped out of his hold and made sure to keep a safe distance between the two of us but my body craved his touch. It was calling out to him like a secret siren luring in its prey.

“Let me help you.” He placed his forehead against mine.

“Please let me in, Elena.” His words came out almost like a plea as if he was begging me to do as he asked. I contemplated his request.

I knew he was my mate but his greater loyalties lie to his Pack than to me. I am scared that when he found out, he would turn me over to Alpha Richard. I pulled away from him and stepped out of his hold. A look of hurt and rejection crossed his features but as quickly as they came, they disappeared.
