Married On Paper To The Billionaire -
Chapter 14: Living in Lala Land
When she woke up, her eyelids felt heavy as if she'd been sleeping all day. She lifted herself to a sitting position and groaned with the effort because her back was sore. "You're awake," a man whispered.
She turned to her right and saw a deliciously handsome man sitting on the chair beside her bed. He was staring at her as if she was an angel descending from heaven. He was dressed in a sky-blue polo shirt and blue jeans. His black wavy hair was badly in need of a trim and his hazel eyes glowed with awe.
"What are you doing here?" She asked him.
"I've been waiting for you to wake up," he replied in a deep baritone voice.
He reached for her hand, but she shrank away from him. What a creep! It wasn't enough that he'd sat there and watched her sleep, now he wanted to touch her too. "Are you ok?" He asked.
"I should be asking you that question. Why are you here? What do you want from me?"
His expression changed from joy to confusion. "Emilia, don't you recognize me?"
The name sounded foreign to her. Was that her name or was this stranger trying to play a fast one on her?
She looked around the room and noticed for the first time that she was in a hospital. Why? What happened to her?
"I should probably get the doctor," he said and rose to his feet.
"The doctor? Why? What am I doing here?"
"You've been in a coma for the past three months," the man said calmly. "I've been coming here every day to sit by your bedside and wait for you to wake up." Emilia's eyes grew large like saucers. "Coma? How? Why?"
"It's a long story. Let me get the doctor first. He'd be thrilled to know that you're awake."
"Three months..." she whispered, trying to remember how she got there.
No matter how hard she tried, nothing came to her mind. Her memory was blank like a slate wiped clean. What happened to her?
Suddenly, she felt a splitting headache and she groaned and grabbed her head with both hands. Her fingers touched a scar on her left temple, and she wondered how it got there.
"Are you ok?" The man asked, coming back to stand beside her bed. "What is it?"
"My head..."
He rushed out of the room immediately and returned a few minutes later with a doctor. They were talking to her, but she couldn't hear what they were saying. A loud bang kept going off in her head repeatedly until she screamed.
When she woke up again, it was evening and there was a middle-aged couple in the room with the handsome guy. They quickly rose to their feet when they saw that she was awake.
"Emilia, darling. How are you feeling now?" The woman asked tenderly.
"Where's the doctor?" She asked.
"I'll go and get him," the handsome man said and left the room.
"Sweetheart, are you ok?" The older man asked her.
She ignored him and looked away. Why wouldn't these strange people leave her alone?
The doctor showed up, smiling like a man who had just won the lottery. "Hello, Emilia. How are you feeling?"
"Why does everyone keep calling me that name?" She asked.
"Because it is your name," the doctor replied calmly. "Do you recognize the people in this room?"
"No. Who are they?"
The woman gasped and the older man held her in his arms immediately as if to prevent her from collapsing. The handsome guy looked disappointed. Who on earth were they? "I'll introduce them to you," said the doctor. "This is Kane Beaumont, your fiancé."
"What!"
"This is Lara Taylor, your mother and Andrew Taylor, your father. Your name is Emilia Taylor and you've been in a coma for three months." "How? Why?"
"You sustained a severe injury to the head when someone shot you."
She gasped. "I got shot? By whom?"
"By a demented woman who is now in jail, paying for what she did to you."
It was a lot for her to take in all at once. She didn't even know how to react. Should be happy that she's engaged to this hot guy? Or worried that this might all just be some kind of setup? "I don't know what to say," she admitted.
"That's understandable," said the doctor. "We'll keep you here for a few more days to observe your vitals and if we don't replace anything amiss, you'll be discharged and free to go home." "Home..." she muttered. Where was that?

"Yes," she replied.
This was awfully awkward for her especially because she didn't recognize this woman that was supposed to be her mother.
The couple left the room, leaving the doctor and the young guy.
"Do you need anything?" The doctor asked her.
"I want to be alone," she replied.
Kane looked let down, but he didn't argue. He said goodnight to her and left the room with the doctor.
He showed up the next day with photos of himself and a woman who looked like her. He told her the back stories about each of the photos but none of it was familiar to her.
The middle-aged couple came too with their daughter who claimed to be her younger sister. She didn't remember the girl either and even after they showed her their family album which featured her in it. By the third day, the doctor certified her ok and approved her discharge from the hospital.
"Would you like to go home with your family?" Kane asked her.
"Do I have my own apartment?" She asked.
"No. Even if you did, it wouldn't be advisable for you to live alone under the circumstances."
"What about you? Do you live alone?"
"Sometimes."
"What do you mean?"
"I live with my family most times, but I also have apartments in different places that I stay in when I want some privacy or just to clear my head."
"You have many apartments? What do you do for a living?"
He smiled. "I'm in charge of running my family's businesses."
She was impressed. He'd claimed to be her fiancé, hadn't he? Well, she might as well stay with him and replace out more about herself and how they ended up getting engaged.
With her consent and the approval of her family, he took her to his log cabin near Calabasas. It was surrounded by woods and there was a creek nearby too. She loved the place and instantly felt at home. "Who was the woman that shot me?" She asked Kane one afternoon while they sat by the creek.

He cleared his throat before speaking. "Well, she was someone I used to be with. She was jealous of you and tried to kill you so that you and I would never be together again." "Why? What did I do to her?"
"Nothing. She was just a selfish, cruel person who always wanted to have her way."
That conversation put things in perspective for her. Kane spent several weeks taking care of her. He cooked for her and told her stories about their brief holiday in Europe.
She especially liked the story about how he proposed to her in Greece. She wished she could remember the event by herself.
On the 40th day of their stay in the cabin, Kane was serving her lunch when she spotted a tiny scar on the back of his left hand. She heard his voice in her head and she began to say the words out loud.
"Mother always warned me against climbing the apple tree, but it was one of my favorite things to do. One afternoon while she and Father were away from home, I climbed it but lost my footing and fell. I got this cut on my hand from that fall, but I was determined to keep my secret..."
Kane stared at her. "Emilia..." he whispered.
"Mother saw the wound on my hand the next day at breakfast and asked me what happened," she continued. "I lied to her and said that I'd been scratched by Lillian's cat. Father was all too glad to hear that and said it was time to finally get rid of the cat. He never liked it."
"You remember..." Kane was saying, but Emilia wasn't done yet.
"Lillian was upset, and I felt sorry for her but not for long. She used to be a very mean girl who always got away with everything. It felt good to stick to her for once. I also hated the cat, so it was good riddance for me. I've never told anyone else this story. It's my dirty little secret from childhood, and now you know it."
She looked up at him and it was as if a curtain had just parted in her mind, revealing all the hidden things that she'd been looking for.
"You told me that story on our second night in Rome," she said softly.
"Oh my god, Emilia. You're back!"
She stood up and flew into his arms, crying happy tears. "Kane!"
"I knew you would come back," he said softly while holding tightly to his chest. "I knew you would come back to me."
"I felt so lost," she wept. "I felt so, so lost."
"And now, I've found you," he said happily. "I'm never going to lose you again. I promise."
She clung to him while she continued to weep with relief. It felt good to be back to her senses. Living in Lala land wasn't fun at all.
"I've missed you so much," Kane whispered into her hair. "I'm so glad you're back."
She stepped away from him just so she could look into his eyes. Yes, she'd missed him too.
"Show me how much you missed me, Kane," she whispered.
"Your wish is my command," he replied and swept her off her feet.
