Married On Paper To The Billionaire
Chapter 44: Happily Never After

"Oh, my goodness! I'm so sorry about that, Kane. What went wrong?"

"It was a difficult labor. Her birth canal was narrow and the doctor suggested an emergency C-section but Serena wouldn't agree to it. She said she wanted me to be there to witness the natural birth, whatever that means." "Wasn't there anything they could've done to save the baby?"

"She was born dead, Emilia. The doctors aren't magicians. There was nothing they could've done."

Emilia sighed. "That's terrible. I don't like Serena but nobody deserves to go through that kind of nightmare. How is she?"

"Asleep right now. She was a mess before, wouldn't let go of the baby and kept screaming at the doctors to do something." "I'm so sorry, Kane."

"Thank you. How's Tiara?"

"Asleep. She was deliriously happy when she saw Travis. It was such a beautiful moment."

"I wish I was there to see it. Have you informed your family about her return?"

"Yes. They'll be here first thing tomorrow morning."

"I hope they're aware that we're still keeping this under wraps until the police complete their investigation. The world doesn't have to know the details."

"I understand and yes, they're aware. What about your folks?"

"Same. We also want to keep tonight's tragedy under wraps for as long as possible until I figure out what to do with Serena."

"What do you mean?"

"Do I compensate her and kick her out of the mansion or what?"

"I can't help you with that, Kane. That's your cup of tea."

"Emilia..."

"What?"

Pause.

"Kane?"

"Can I come over?"

"To where?"

"Your place."

"No."

"Emilia - "

"No! That is completely out of the question. I got this place to get away from you."

"What about our children? I haven't seen Travis in weeks."

"You will see your children but not tonight. Listen, I have to go now, ok? It has been an exhausting evening and I'd like to get some rest."

She hung up abruptly and Kane cursed under his breath. How had he let things get out of hand like this? How had he been so careless to destroy his marriage like this? "Mr Beaumont?"

He turned around and found a nurse standing behind him. "Yes?"

"Miss Filipe is awake and asking for you."

"Oh, ok. Thank you."

He strolled to the recovery ward where Serena was staying in a private room. 'Lupe was sitting in the lobby crying softly. He ignored her and went into Serena's room.

She looked frail on the bed and her hair was disheveled. Her skin was pale and there dark circles under her eyes. When she saw him, she attempted to smile but it came out as a wince instead. Kane didn't know what to say to her, so he just stood beside her bed and waited for her to speak.

"I am so sorry," she said with much effort.

"It's ok. It wasn't your fault," he said warmly.

"No, it wasn't my fault. It was yours."

"Excuse me?"

"If you'd gotten here sooner I wouldn't have wasted so much time until my daughter suffocated and died inside me."

"But I told you why I couldn't come right away. My daughter was getting rescued you're your accomplice."

"Joyce wasn't my accomplice. My business with her ended after I handed your daughter to her."

"That makes you an accomplice!"

"I'm sorry you feel that way. I only did that to punish Emilia, I didn't mean to hurt you."

"Your thinking is seriously warped. How would you kidnap my child and not expect me to be hurt?"

"So, now that you've found her, what next?"

"That's none of your business. You should focus on recovering."

"And then what?"

"And then carry on with your life."

"What life? My biggest dream has just been shattered tonight, Kane."

"Sorry."

"But we can try again..."

"What?"

"Once I feel better, we can try to have another baby."

Kane stared at her as if she's grown another head on her neck. "Are you insane? Do you realize that this crazy stunt you pulled nearly destroyed my marriage?"

"Your marriage was destroyed from the very beginning. Besides, you're better off without Emilia. I can make you truly happy, Kane. I will be obedient, truthful and faithful to you." He shook his head incredulously. "You're unbelievable."

"I love you, Kane. That's what I've been telling you for months. Why can't you just give me a chance?"

"Because I would be a lunatic to be romantically involved with a woman who abducted my child, took advantage of me in a vulnerable moment and tried to blackmail me as well."

"I was desperate! Why can't you just understand me?"

"This conversation is over. When you have recovered, I will have my assistant get you and your foster mother a decent apartment where you can live henceforth. I am only doing that because of my sympathy for you regarding what happened to you tonight and also because I've found my daughter. I will also wire some money to you to help you restart your life."

"I don't want your money. I never did!"

"That's your loss. We're done here." He turned to leave but her next words halted his strides.

"Don't you dare think that you can use me and discard me as you did to Kendra. Joyce may have found Jesus and decided to return your child to you, but I'm not that forgiving."

"Then you will rot in jail where you belong. Don't test me, Serena. The only thing tying you to me died tonight. I don't owe you anything anymore!"

****

Tiara's first day of therapy went well and Emilia was pleased. Aside from the occasional nightmares when she slept, she was just like any other toddler.

Joyce had done a poor job of taking care of the child and she looked malnourished when she was rescued. However, one week later, she was looking better and the rosy color of good health was returning to her skin.

Emilia and Kane had released a joint statement through a PR representative, announcing the return of their daughter as well as the death of Serena's baby who was still referred to as Jack Beaumont's child. There was no mention of how Tiara was found or Joyce Banks's role in the matter but that did not stop the public from speculating.

"How are you going to cope with the children when I return to Wyoming tomorrow?" Matt asked her.

They were sitting on the balcony of her high-rise apartment building while the twins played with their toys nearby. Being in the city for over two weeks felt like an exotic vacation to him as he rarely ever left the countryside.

"You seem to forget that I have a nanny here," Emilia laughed. "She's going to be living with us full-time when you go back home."

"Are you kicking me out?"

"We only have one guest room here," she laughed. "But seriously, I'll be fine."

"I'm seriously thinking about moving here permanently."

Emilia was stunned. "Why? What about your job?"

"Why? Because of you. And as for my job, I can always get another one."

"Matt, there is no farming job here."

"Don't worry about me, Emilia. I'll figure something out. I just want to be with you, that's all."

She smiled at him but internally, she was irritated. Matt had become too clingy for her liking. She'd tried to get him to leave as soon as Tiara returned but he wouldn't budge. Even her family were tired of seeing him in her apartment. She'd managed to avoid getting intimate with him since her daughter came back because she'd been spending more time with the children to help them bond with each other again. She had hoped that would make him lose patience with her and leave, but he didn't and now she was fed up.

Her doorbell rang, jolting her from her thoughts. The children squealed with delight and looked up at her expectantly.

"I wasn't expecting anyone to stop by today," she said, wondering who the visitor might be. "I wonder why the doorman didn't call first to inform me that someone was coming here."

"I'll get the door and see who it is," said Matt, rising to his feet.

Emilia thanked him, appreciating his ability to take initiative. He might be a clingy boyfriend, but he knew how to make himself useful.

"What are you doing here?" She heard him say when he opened the door.

"Who is it?" She asked.

"Daddy!" Travis screamed and ran to the door.

Emilia got up immediately and went inside. Tiara followed her brother's cue and ran to hug Kane too. He carried both of them in his arms, kissing them simultaneously.

"See, Daddy. My dinosaur!" Travis yelled happily as he pointed at his toy dinosaur on the floor.

"Wow, that's a huge dinosaur," said Kane. "what else have you got?"

Travis wiggled his body and Kane put him down so that he could run off to pick up his other toys. Tiara was rather awkward with her father until he put her down too and she went back to her toys. Emilia waited patiently for the kids to have their time with their dad. When they'd shown him all of their toys, she told them to go and continue playing in their room.

Once the children were out of earshot, Kane turned his attention to Matt. "What are you doing in my wife's apartment?"

"I could ask you the same question," Matt fired back.

"You didn't tell me you were coming here, Kane," Emilia said, trying to redirect his attention.

"Oh, you wanted me to notify you ahead so that you can tell your boyfriend to hide in a closet?"

"Why would I hide in a closet? You don't intimidate me," Matt said confidently.

"Then you're more stupid than I thought," Kane replied.

"Kane, please - "

"It's ok, Emilia, let him talk. He's just upset that he's been replaced."

"By who? A worthless bum like you?"

"Kane, that's enough. Don't insult my guest in my presence!"

He glared at her. "I thought you had better taste in men. If you were going to leave me, why not go for someone on the same level as me? Why settle for this low-life leech who wants to feed off you like a parasite?" Matt lost his temper and lunged at Kane with a swinging fist but Kane dodged the blow and retaliated with a punch to Matt's gut. He bent over and groaned in pain.

"Kane, stop!" Emilia screamed. "What are you doing?"

Matt was in so much pain that he sank to his knees, breathing deeply. He hadn't expected the billionaire to be so swift or so hard-fisted.

Emilia felt sorry for Matt but she was low key impressed by how Kane struck out and ended the fight before it fully began.

"I think you should leave now," she said.

"Of course, I'll leave, but I want this yob out of here too. You should know better than to let a stranger hang around our children, especially after what happened to Tiara."

"Matt isn't a yob and he's not a stranger either."

"I don't feel comfortable with him being around my kids. If you two want to hook up, do it elsewhere, not in front of my children."

"Leave her alone!" Matt snapped.

Kane ignored him. "We're not done here, Emilia. If this is the reason you filed for a divorce, then you better think again because I will fight you with everything I've got until I get my children away from this disgusting situation you have going on here."

"You're one to talk, aren't you? Would you have come here if Serena's baby survived? You had already given up on replaceing Tiara because of that child. Now, here you are threatening fire and brimstone as if you care."

"That's because I do. And for your information, whether Serena's baby survived or not, it doesn't change the fact that Travis and Tiara are my children. You can replace me in your life, but you can never replace me in theirs." With that, he stormed out of her apartment and slammed the door behind him.
