Married On Paper To The Billionaire -
Chapter 7: Hey, Handsome!
"I can't get over how lovely this place is," Emilia gushed.
They were sitting by the Lake and enjoying some sandwiches that Matt had brought for them.
It was her second week in Wyoming and having lunch together at Lake Vida was becoming one of their favorite pastimes.
"These days, it reminds me of you," Matt said softly.
Emilia smiled and looked away. She knew Matt had developed feelings for her and it made her feel guilty.
She'd led him on with her constant flirting even though she had no interest in taking their friendship any step further. It had only been a fun distraction for her. She'd eventually confided in him and told him about her situation but it didn't discourage him one bit.
"I know we've only known each other for two weeks but the truth is that I really like you, Emilia. I'd like it very much if you can be my girlfriend."
She chuckled. "That's very adorable. The last time a boy asked me to be his girlfriend was way back in high school."
"But I'm not a boy, am I? I'm a man who knows what he wants and she's right here in front of me."
"That's very sweet, Matt, but I don't think I'm ready for that. I'm sorry that I encouraged your attention all this time. I'm not even fully divorced yet."
"Are there any chances of you and your husband ever reconciling again?"
She paused to think about the question and her phone dinged. It was an email from a familiar address. Her heart missed a beat.
"Is everything all right?" Matt asked. He'd noticed how her expression changed when the email popped up on her phone.
"Yeah... I should probably wait until I get home before checking this."
"Is it a message from your husband?"
"No. His lawyer."
"Oh..."
They were quiet. The only noise surrounding them was the sounds of birds chirping and insects buzzing about. The suspense was killing her.
"You know what, I'll read it right now," she said and tapped her phone screen.
There wasn't much to read in the email but when she was done, her hands were shaking and her throat was tight.
"He's doing it," she whispered.
"What?"
"I'm being summoned to attend our first divorce hearing in court. They completely skipped the mediation phase!" "Wait, were you hoping to get back together with him?"
"My father's business depends heavily on Kane's funding. If we get divorced, all of that stops."
"I understand that Emilia, but your happiness matters too. You're more than a pawn on a chessboard."
"I don't give a crap about your opinion, Matt. Don't talk to me like I'm a dumb child that doesn't know what's good for her!"
"That wasn't-"
"Stop. I know you mean well but I need you to stop talking and give me some time to process this."
He looked disappointed but he didn't say anything. He quietly began to pack up their picnic basket and disposable utensils.
"I'm sorry, Matt. I didn't mean to bark at you like that. You didn't do anything wrong."
"It's ok," he said but he didn't look at her. He picked up the basket and began to leave.
Emilia felt an overwhelming sense of loneliness and she began to cry. She felt so miserable and defeated.
Matt turned around immediately when he heard her crying. He dropped the basket and went to crouch beside her where she sat.
"I'm sorry, Emilia. I didn't mean to upset you."
"No, you didn't. You're not the one making me cry."
He brushed away a tear from her cheek with his thumb. It felt coarse, unlike Kane's soft fingers. Despite how much she was hurting, she still missed him.
"He doesn't deserve your tears," Matt whispered.
He was looking into her eyes now. His warm brown eyes told her just how much he cared about her. Why couldn't Kane be sweet to her like this adorable farm worker? "You should be with someone who can make you happy,” he continued softly.
Emilia nodded slowly. She was mesmerized by his soft words and kindness. When he leaned forward and kissed her, she wasn't surprised.
His lips were warm and soft. He kept them on hers, waiting for her to respond. She didn't and he stopped.
"I'm sorry," he apologized.
"Don't be. It's ok."
"Do you want me to walk you back home?"
"Sure, thanks."
As she walked back to her Grandmother's house with Matt beside her, she wondered what Kane was doing at the moment.

"I don't know why this divorce thing is taking forever," Kendra complained. "Just sign all the papers and get it over with!"
"It's a process, Kendra. We've only been separated for a couple of weeks," Kane replied.
"Rich people don't follow protocols. Get rid of her already!"
"Can you please talk without yelling? I'm not deaf."

"What did you say?"
"Nothing."
"Why are you suddenly so bothered by Emilia? She's not even here and you're so worked up about her."
"I wasn't bothered before because she wasn't a threat then."
"And she is now?"
"She almost stole you from me."
"That's ridiculous. I'm not an object that can be stolen."
"But you abandoned me and claimed to be in love with her."
"It wasn't a claim. I was in love with her."
"Bull. Shit."
Kane sighed. He'd had enough of Kendra's nonsense for one day. He had to get rid of her or else he would never have the peace he craved so badly right now. "Goodnight, Kendra. Go home."
She frowned at him. "Excuse me?"
"I said, go home."
"This is my home!"
"No, it's not. It's my condo and I want to be alone in it. Now, leave."
"Don't try that with me, Kane. I'm not that stupid girl that let you kick her around like a ball. I'm not going to just roll over and let you disrespect me."
He could feel his temper rising to the surface. Kendra was as stubborn as a goat and it would take more than words to make her leave.
He picked up the phone on the stool beside him and dialed a number. "Please, come upstairs," he said into the phone.
"Who are you calling?" She asked suspiciously.
"You'll see," he replied.
Kendra didn't budge. She lifted her chin defiantly and remained seated on the couch opposite him.
There was a knock on the door and Kane said, "Come in."
It turned out to be Kane's bodyguard, Dino. He was a huge African-American man who was built like Optimus Prime. His dark suit fit him perfectly like a glove and he permanently had a pair of dark shades on. "Yes, boss," he said in a deep baritone that seemed to bounce off the walls.

"Of course, sir,” replied Dino. "Please, come with me, Ms Banks." "Are you kidding me?" She shouted at Kane. "How dare you?" "Let's go, Ms Banks," said Dino, reaching for her.
"Don't touch me!" She snarled and slapped his hand away.
Dino looked at Kane. Kane nodded at him. Dino looked back and in one swift motion, lifted Kendra off the couch and tossed her across his shoulder.
"Put me down!" She screamed and kicked but it was useless. Dino had her tightly pinned on his shoulder.
"I'll have your things couriered to your place tomorrow," Kane informed her as she was carried away.
Finally, when he was alone, he walked over to his bar and poured himself a drink. All he could think about was Emilia.
Where was she now? How was she doing?
"Damn," he muttered and took a big gulp of his drink. He hated how much he missed her.
Those disgraceful videos of her running down the road and falling had angered him greatly. As if that wasn't bad enough, the internet trolls had turned her photos into horrid memes. "Shit," he swore and poured himself another drink.
He didn't know whether to look forward to seeing her at the court hearing or dread it. He wasn't even sure of how he felt about her anymore.
The disappointment he felt the following week was crippling. Emilia didn't show up in court but instead, sent her lawyer to represent her and inform him that she would not contest the divorce.
"Well, it's safe to say that she's moved on," his lawyer said with satisfaction. "Let's wrap this up quickly and call it a day."
He was still stewing about it when his secretary announced to him a couple of hours later that Kendra was asking to see him. He was tired of her and this was probably the best time to finally break up with her. "Let her in," he said into the intercom.
A few seconds later, Kendra breezed into his office like a whirlwind. She was dressed in bright colors and had a wide smile on her face.
"You didn't tell me you were coming."
"Well, I'm here now and I've got good news for you."
"What?"
She pulled a folded piece of paper out of her purse and placed it on the table in front of him.
"What's this?"
"It's the test result from the hospital. I'm pregnant, Kane. We're going to have a baby!"
