“I need to understand why you need revenge.” Lucian kept his voice gentle as he spoke. “Let me in.”

I glared at him as his hand palmed my face and his thumb began to stroke my cheek. I would never admit this to him, but his touch did things to me. Soothed me. Almost made me safe.

I roll my eyes at myself. There is no harm in telling him some of the truth.

“My mother never failed to let me know how disgusted she was by me. I would think that she would understand how it feels to be different. She was originally from a small island and was sent to our coven to learn from them. They were all excited until they actually saw what my mother looked like. They treated her different because she didn’t look like them.”

I remember the stories that she would tell my siblings and I as if she told me them yesterday.

Her skin was tan compared to the pale skin of those apart of the coven.

She had dark unruly curly hair compared to the pin straight hair the witch’s apart of the coven usually had.

They viewed her as lazy and careless and feared that she would influence those around her to act the same.

The only person who treated her like a normal person was my dad.

He loved everything that they tried to change about her.

So when my mother found out that I was different from others and was the first to support my exile, it felt like the ultimate betrayal.

“If revenge is what you want Arabella, then it is what you will get.” The look in his eyes lets me know that he was probably inside my head, and heard my thoughts of my mother.

It doesn’t matter though, because I’ll be done with him once this is all over.

He is just a means to an end.
