Chapter 14

As the nurse dabbed at Beatrice’s wound with disinfectant, Beatrice winced and let out a tiny yelp. Yosef was at her side in a flash. “Are you okay?

“Just a scratch,Beatrice said, looking up at him with those doe eyes. Mr. Webb, what about your shoulder? Does it hurt a lot? You should get that checked.”

Yosef had taken a hit from the edge of the float while shielding Beatrice.

It’s nothing.Yosef brushed it off.

He fussed over Beatrice’s hand. “Keep it dry, okay? We don’t want you to get a bacterial infection. I’ll get someone to look after you.

“I can take care of myself, Mr. Webb. I’m not a kid, you know.”

Zara watched them with an icy stare. All her fatigue and disappointment had built tidal wave, and it was ready to crash over her.

What a joke.

Without a sound, Zara eased her injured leg off the bed and onto the floor, bracing herself to stand. A sharp pain zipped from her foot to her heart.

Zara was on the brink of being seriously hurt, and Yosef had not shown a shred of concern for her. As for Beatrice, she had a tiny scratch, and he was all over it. He gave her numerous instructions and even got someone to take care of her.

She let out a laugh, but it contained no joy. She was done putting up with this. It was time to

call them out!

“So, Beatrice, you’re sticking to your story, huh?”

“Ms. Lowry, I’ve always been fond of you. I really want to help you out, but after what went down today… Lying just isn’t my thing.“.

Beatrice’s ‘lying just isn’t my thing‘ meant that she was telling the truth. She could not lie to

cover for Zara.

Zara got the subtext loud and clear, but she needed to hear it straight up. She pressed, “You actually saw me mess with the rope with your own two eyes?

Yosef was the first to snap, “How many times are you going to ask the same thing?

Beatrice comforted him gently, Mr. Webb, don’t be angry. Ms. Lowry’s just doublechecking with me. It’s no biggie. Look, Ms. Lowry, we both dropped the ball here. You with the rope, and me not giving you a heads–up.

“When the client comes to, we’ll go say sorry together.”

Yosef scowled. “You didn’t do anything wrong.”

Zara tuned out Yosef’s words. She was after one thing only–Beatrice’s honest answer.

“And if I dig up proof that you’re lying, how are you gonna make it right with me?”

Beatrice was caught off guard, still trying to figure out Zara’s angle. Then, Zara added, “How about a slap in the face?”

After all, it was Beatrice’s loose lips that were causing all the trouble!

Yosef was seriously ticked off. “Isn’t this enough trouble for you? Or do you want to make things even worse?”

Zara’s eyes were locked on Beatrice: “Scared to take the bet? Weren’t you so sure you saw something? Or are you just admitting you made it all up?”

Beatrice’s eyelashes flickered nervously. The factory manager, her coworkers, and even the medical staff were all staring at her now.

Zara had cornered her with just a few sharp words. If Beatrice chickened out now, the

credibility of the words she said earlier would be greatly reduced.

She could not back down, not now. If she did, she would lose Yosef’s trust too.

Evidence? What could Zara possibly dig up? The factory’s manager had already said there were no surveillance cameras… This had to be a bluff.

Then, it clicked for Beatrice. She saw right through Zara’s game.

She was just trying to spook her!

Both of them knew the truth about the rope. Zara figured if she kept the pressure on, Beatrice would crack, refuse the bet, and Zara would win this round.

Beatrice was not about to let this chance slip through her fingers–not when she was this close to sending Zara packing for good.

She faced Zara again, her gaze steady. She uttered each word with deliberate force.

“I stand by every single word I’ve said, and I’m definitely up for your challenge, Ms. Lowry. But tell me, how long do you plan to investigate? Doctor, is our client awake yet?”

The doctor, who had been too engrossed in the showdown to leave, perked up and nodded eagerly. “Yep, he’s up.”

Beatrice put on a show of concern. “Mr. Webb’s about to rush off and fill the client in on the accident. He probably can’t wait around for you to investigate.
