Avery’s pov
The weight of the news made my tummy hurt and my heart aches. It felt like someone had struck their hand through my chest, got a grip on my heart, and squeezed it until it bled. My knees grow weak as the room begins to spin around me.
Xade is right behind me, pulling me in his arms as I looked at the screen in horror. Xaden takes the remote from me and switches the channels, but every single one that came up seems to be talking about this “very dangerous patient” who escaped, aka me.
Xade growled harshly. “Put it off!”
Xaden obeys and the TV screen goes black. But I can’t stop seeing that footage of me running down the halls while the anchor’s voice drew up a narrative that painted me as this so called dangerous fugitive.
“Did you see it?” Melissa whispered, her voice heavy with anxiety.
“Yeah,” I choked, my fingers gripping around the phone hard. “How….
After you left he came back and I made an excuse that I left to get a cup of coffee and when I came back you were gone. Then he had everyone searching for you Avery, it was like this man had gone crazed. You should have seen his eyes,” Melissa whispered in fright.
“I didn’t know what to do so I managed to sneak out. I only saw the news this morning and I don’t understand why he would say you’re a threat to society and dangerous. You’re only pregnant-
She stops, her breath hitching. “Do you think this could be because of that animal DNA thing?”
I stiffen, my heart accelerating. Could that be the reason why? Why would he think I am dangerous because of this?
“I don’t know,” I whispered, my lower lip trembling as I rest my other hand on my stomach protectively. They put a bounty on my head as if I were some kind of criminal who escaped the hospital.
Avery-” she stops when a sharp knock sounds at the door, then another. This time is was louder and more urgent.
“Uh I will call you back okay? Keep me updated,” she ends the call before I can respond and I keep the phone to my ear as if it was an anchor that would keep me from falling.
Xade begins to pace the floor, running his fingers through his hair. Xaden looks lost and confused and Kaylee looks unsure of what to do. That makes the two of us.
” This can’t be right. Why would they put her up there like she was some fucking criminal?” Xade snarled.
Xaden looks at me, his brows furrowing. ” When was this video taken?”
Before I came here,” I murmured, finally pulling the phone from my ear. “I had a massive headache that made me pass out. All along it was the memories returning but Melissa called 911 and they brought me to the hospital. The doctor,” I swallowed nervously. “The doctor found animal DNA in my blood.”
Xade cursed under his breath, cupping my face with both hands as he searches my eyes. “I know you’re scared baby, but I promise you I will protect you. We will get this sorted out.”
“He must be one of those secret hunters who work in places like this to capture our unguarded kind,” Xade’s father uttered as he strolls into the living room with his wife by his side. She smiles at me reassuringly but I cannot help but feel more uncertain, especially with her husband’s words fluttering in the air.
This was huge. I was on all news broadcasting channels, labeled as a very dangerous person. A danger to society. I cannot help but feel like a caged animal.
His eyes move from Xade to mine. “You’re lucky you got out of there alive.”
