Avery’s pov
Hi, mom,” I said with a shaky smile on my face as she stares back at me wide-eyed.
She takes a hesitant step forward as if still not believing I am right in front of her. ” Avery, are you really here?”
It’s like her eyes are only zoned on me and have not realised Xade standing here beside me yet. I nod. ” Surprise,” I said, my voice trembling slightly.
She’s still dressed in her gardening outfit, the gloves still on her hands which let me know she just got in from gardening. My heart warmed. She always loved plants.
Her eyes teared and without another word she rush forward, pulling me word she rush forward, pulling me into a hug. I sigh, not caring that the dirt on her gloves was pressing into my back. I hugged her back just as tightly, soaking in the warmth of her hug that I had missed for months. Her scent that made me always feel peace.
She smells of dirt and flowers, she smells like home.
I can’t believe you’re standing right here,” she whisper, her voice thick with emotion and she pulls away slightly to look at my face. Her eyes beam up at me. My mom was shorter than me, about two inches short and I revelled in the feeling of being a bit taller than her. At least I am taller than one person.
What are you doing here? Are you on break? You hadn’t told me you were on break,” her brows furrow as a mask of confusion swirls in her gaze. I took in a deep breath, my fingers shaking as I nervously bit my lower lip.
That’s when her eyes skit over to Xade standing beside me, and as if just noticing him for the first time, her eyes widen in surprise. ” Oh! And who might this be? Is he a friend from college?”
Her not remembering him is going to make this even more difficult to explain. What if she thinks I’m just some careless girl who fell for anyone and got knocked up? That would be embarrassing.
“Not only friend, he’s my boyfriend,” I managed to say and saw the look of pure startlement on her face.
Nerves build inside me and that’s when nausea decides to crawl its way up into my throat. I gagged, and rush out of Xade’s hold, bending over the barricade as I threw up.
Avery!” Mom’s voice is loud as both she and Xade rush to my side. She starts to rub my back in soothing circles while Xade holds my hair back and tells me I’m okay. “Are you okay?” Mom rushed in worry as I wrench again on her poor rose flowers.
I felt awful but couldn’t stop.
“She’s okay,” Xade said soothingly. “Probably just some nausea cause of the baby,”
I froze. We all froze. I could hear a freaking pin drop if there was even a pin to begin with. My heart skipped, then skipped some more until it was running viciously in my chest. ” Wh-a-t?” Mom stuttered, her voice her swirling with disbelief.
This was not how I wanted to break things down to her and I don’t believe that was how Xade wanted her to know as well. He was also stunned by his words, looking at me apologetically and regretfully.
Ba-by?” Mom stammered even more when Xade and I remain quiet. She stops rubbing those soothing circles on my back, takes a step backward and looks at me and Xade, her eyes misting with confusion and doubt.
Avery?” her voice is low, urgent to make me tell her the truth. Xade gripped my hand, rubbing circles on the back of my hand in comfort. Mom’s eyes fall to our interlocked fingers and her eyes widen.
I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand and her eyes drop to my stomach. ” Avery are you pregnant?”
