Avery’s pov

I staggered, her words hitting me right across my face. I had not expected her to be so harsh. My stomach quivers and my lower lip trembles. ” Mom, please-

She shook her head, her eyes swimming with disappointment. ” I need time to process all of this. You can’t just pop in with a boy I have never heard of and announce you’re expecting with him and expect me to be okay with this right away,”

She waves her hands between Xade and me.

Whatever this is,”

Fay,” Xade murmurs, using her middle name. He was the only one who used it. “I know this has been a shock to you and your emotions are all over the place but know that I love your daughter more than my own life and I will take care of her and our baby,”

Mom looks at him surprised, jaw dropped a bit. ” How-how do you-

She looks at me and her eyes lit with understanding. “I guess you’ve mentioned me to him but failed to mention him to me. I’m your mother and you never told me you were serious with someone,”

Mom I- I frowned when she turns her back to me and began to walk away, removing her gloves, her shoulders shaky. ” I need time to process this Avery, I need some time alone,” her voice tremble.

I swallowed hard and Xade came to stand beside me, clutching my hand and giving it a squeeze. ” Okay,” I whispered to her in defeat. She needed time and I couldn’t exactly force her to listen to me or accept this.

Xade and I turn around to leave but she calls out to me, her voice soft and faint. “I love you Avery. No matter what, I love you. But, I just need some time to process all of this,”

Her words, though filled with love, also was filled with disbelief and disappointment. I turn around, my eyes filled with tears to see that she was already looking at me. I love you too Mom,” I said emotionally. Take all the time you need and I’m sorry this is how you found out about it.”

She nods, managing to crack a small smile and then turns around once more and disappears into the kitchen. I can hear her shaky cries from here as she tries to stifle them. It’s gut wrenching and I cannot help myself.

I stride over to the kitchen, replaceing her leaning against the countertop, her shoulders shaking as she silently cries. I am not sure if she has heard me enter or not, but I approach her and hug her from behind.

She stiffens, the cries stopping. I hold her tighter. “I am still your little girl mom,” I murmured, wishing I could have found a better way to tell her I was expecting.

With my arms wrapped around her, she surprises me when her hand touches mine, her palm warm. “I’m sorry for reacting the way I did,” she whispered, squeezing my hand. “I didn’t mean for it to come out so harsh, it is just that I hadn’t pictured you to be a mom so early and-

She stops, her voice growing shaky. “I will need time to process this,”

I nod, hugging her once more and planting a kiss on her shoulder. “I love you mom,”

I am about to detach my arms from her when she stops me. “Where will you be staying? Or are you going back to the campus?”

I gnaw on my lips before responding. “I’m going to stay with Xade for a bit, I’ll explain everything to you when you’re ready to listen. But just know he loves me and takes care of me,”

I will protect her with my life,” Xade utters in the doorway. “I will protect them, you can count on me Fay.”

Mom turns to look at him standing in the doorway, her eyes hard to read. They drop, and she looks away. “You better,” she utters, squeezing my shoulder and walking away.
