My Darling, My Dearest -
Chapter 409 The Prenatal Checkup
The next morning, Rachel woke up the same time as usual, although she didn't sleep well last night because of another dream. In her dream, she was in the amusement park with her parents, playing and enjoying the rides. She didn't have to think about anything else but just laugh and have fun.
Her father had always said that she was the most beautiful when she smiled.
Also, her mother had always loved seeing her happy.
As a child, she had lived a carefree life full of love.
Rachel wished she could live in that dream forever and never wake up again. But that couldn't be possible. She had to face the harsh reality of life. She slowly sat up on the bed, feeling dizzy maybe because she hadn't eaten anything last night.
She closed her eyes again and rested for a while. When she opened them again, she felt much better.
She slowly put on her slippers and got out of the room. She intended to go to the kitchen to fill her empty stomach. When she passed by Jack's bedroom, she saw that the door was still open, and the quilt was still neatly laid on the bed.
It seemed that he didn't come back last night.
She couldn't help frowning as she tried to recall Jack's expression when she left him at the restaurant last night. But no matter how she racked her brain, she couldn't remember how he'd looked.
Julie came upstairs with a tray of nutritious breakfast in her hands. As soon as she saw Rachel outside the room, she asked in surprise, "Miss, why did you get up so early today?"
Every time she went upstairs, Rachel was already awake but still lying in bed.
"I can't go back to sleep anymore." Rachel pursed her lips. "Julie, didn't Jack come home last night?"
Julie looked at the direction of Jack's bedroom and nodded. "Yes. Mr. Fu hasn't come back yet.
She subconsciously looked at Rachel's eyes and saw darkness in there. Seeing that Rachel's expression became a little strange, she hurriedly added, "Mr. Fu must be busy at the company, that's why he wasn't able to come home last night."
Rachel didn't say anything, but deep inside her, she was somewhat resentful. Anyway, what did it have to do with her?
It didn't matter at all. After she gave birth, she just had to make sure that her baby was safe, and then she could leave. So it wasn't necessary to get affected by his girlfriend's provocation and get angry that he didn't come home last night.
She felt more relaxed after such realizations, so she followed Julie back to the dining room. Perhaps she was really hungry that she had two bowls of millet porridge at once. She had even forgotten to brush her teeth and remembered it just now.
Jack was awakened by the dryness of his throat. He was about to get up to get a glass of water when his eyes caught a figure sleeping on the couch. He couldn't help frowning.
Scarlett had been awake for a long time. But when she heard a sound behind her, she pretended to be asleep and was only awakened by Jack's movements. She turned slowly and rubbed her sleepy eyes. "Mr. Fu, you wake up so early."
"Why are you here?" Since Jack had drunk too much last night, his throat felt uncomfortably dry, so he coughed several times.
Looking at his awkward face, Scarlett got up from the couch and put on her shoes. "I'll get you a glass of water."
"No need." He grabbed her arm to stop her, stood up, and poured a glass of water for himself.
The only reason why he stopped Scarlett from getting a glass of water for him was that he wasn't used to being served by a stranger. However, Scarlett misunderstood his action.
She slowly touched her left wrist with her right hand as her mouth curved into a smile. It seemed that her strategy last night worked successfully.
Last night, while Jack was waiting for a taxi, he suddenly lost consciousness due to drunkenness. Scarlett took advantage of the situation. She called her driver and asked him to send them to a hotel. She let Jack sleep in the bed while she slept on the sofa.
She knew that Jack was different from most men. He didn't like women who took the initiative to sleep with a man.
So to make a good impression on him, she pretended to be a woman who had high selfesteem and kept a certain distance from him. Moreover, she wanted Jack to believe that she did not intend to mess with him.
And judging from the current situation, she seemed to have done the right thing.
Jack drank two glasses of water in a row, and his throat felt a bit better. Scarlett was tying her hair into a ponytail when he put down the glass. She came to him and said in a low voice, "I met you in the bar last night. You were too drunk, and you lost consciousness. Since I was afraid that your parents would worry about you if they saw you in such a miserable situation, I decided to bring you here instead of your home. I hope you don't mind me deciding without consulting you."
"No, I don't," Jack said and pinched his glabella. "Thank you."
Although he didn't have a good impression of her, it didn't hinder him from expressing his gratitude.
After thanking her, he picked up his suit from the back of the chair and walked out. As soon as his hand touched the doorknob, he heard her voice from behind. "Since I helped you last night, can I ask you a favor?"
He turned around and glanced at her coldly. "Tell me what it is."
Scarlett shrugged. "It's not really a big deal. Do you still remember that our mothers had once set us up for a blind date? My mother likes you a lot, and she wants me to marry you. But I know that you like someone else, and I don't like to marry a man who won't take me seriously at all. But the problem is, my mother is a bit difficult to deal with. I'm afraid that she..."
Before she could finish her words, Jack cut her off. "Miss Chen, just go straight to the point."
"My grandpa will be celebrating his eightieth birthday next week. My mother wants me to invite you to have dinner with us. I hope you can do me a favor just this once. Please come with me and pretend to be my boyfriend, so I can have a peaceful time and enjoy my meal in front of them."
"Sorry, but I can't help you with that," Jack refused unhesitatingly.
To get rid of those unpleasant thoughts, Rachel grabbed a medical magazine and read the most interesting article in there.
Julie, who was taking a short rest, looked through the calendar and saw a red circle on today's date. She had actually marked it before to make sure that she wouldn't forget.
With a smile, she reminded Rachel, "Miss, today is the date of your prenatal checkup. What time are you going to the hospital?"
Rachel suddenly realized that her prenatal schedule slipped her mind. She put down the magazine in her hands and stood up. "I'm going to change my clothes now."
Jack had just arrived home. Unfortunately, he was still reeking of alcohol. When he saw Rachel coming down the stairs with a bag in her hand, he asked, "Where are you going?"
Rachel's mind seemed to be wandering around. Actually, she was thinking if she hadn't forgotten anything. Prenatal checkups were a bit troublesome because she had to bring all the examination results she had in the previous months. The doctor might check them anytime, and she didn't want to waste more time going back home to get them.
She had actually organized all of them in one envelope before, but when she moved back to Ninwell City, her files accidentally scattered.
Since her mind was busy, she didn't hear Jack's question. On the other hand, he thought that she deliberately ignored him because of what happened last night, so he couldn't help feeling a sharp pang in his heart. He turned to Julie and asked the same question.
Julie replied, "Miss Shen is going to the hospital for her prenatal checkup today."
"I'll go with you then."
Jack remembered that he had set a reminder on his phone for today's date. The alarm had rung this morning. But because of the hangover from last night, he just turned it off without giving it a thought.
He put on the suit hanging on his arm and reached out to take Rachel's bag from her. However, she took two steps back and frowned at him. "No, thanks. Julie will go with me."
Jack said in a low voice, "It won't be convenient for the two of you."
"I think it will be more inconvenient if you go with us." Rachel then looked away and walked out. Julie was about to remind Jack that it wouldn't be appropriate if he went with them to the hospital because of the strong smell of alcohol on his body. But seeing Rachel walking out of the house briskly, she didn't get the chance to speak. She had to follow Rachel immediately.
Seeing Rachel leave without looking back, Jack's face suddenly darkened. An indescribable desolation and coldness rose from his heart. Why did she treat him like rubbish no matter what he did? This feeling made him feel uncomfortable all over.
At this time, Scarlett was in a cafe. She held her phone tightly and kept on looking down at the screen. When she saw that the signal was only two bars, she stood up, held her phone up, and moved to different directions to look for a signal. She couldn't feel at ease until she got a full signal again.
A friend who accompanied her was rendered speechless. She stayed at a bar until two o'clock in the morning last night, so she planned to sleep at home until the afternoon. However, Scarlett called her and asked her out for a coffee early this morning.
Somehow, she thought that a cup of coffee was good for her to feel refreshed. But now that she was only sitting still while watching Scarlett looking for a signal restlessly, she couldn't help complaining, "Scarlett, can you come back here and sit down?"
"I am expecting a very important call." Scarlett didn't care about other people's gazes at her. Instead, she looked at all of them with disdain.
Since she had witnessed how Rachel treated Jack indifferently at the restaurant yesterday, she thought that she already had a chance on him.
