My Darling, My Dearest -
Chapter 415 Jack Had A Car Accident
Rachel's cold face came before his eyes. Jack couldn't help but feel a pang of pain. He took a deep breath, determined to catch up with her taxi. Just then, the phone in his pocket rang, diverting his attention.
As soon as Rachel got home, she sat on the sofa, trying to calm herself. She had experienced a whirlwind of emotions. Instantly, she touched her belly, knowing such extreme reactions weren't good for her baby. Julie noticed that something was off about her. Bringing her a glass of water, she asked, "Miss, are you feeling okay?"
"Oh yes, I am fine,"
Rachel said and began to drink the water. She realized she had been extremely thirsty. In a gulp, the glass was empty.
Ever since she came back from outpatient department, she knew that her colleagues had begun talking about her. Such talks annoyed her a great deal so she remained in the office most of the time. The pantry was considered the gossip place hence she avoided going there.
At present, Rachel was gazing at Julie. And Julie was tempted to ask about Jack. After all, their relationship seemed a bit strained lately. But before she could say anything, the landline rang, interrupting their talk.
Julie went and picked it up. The conversation was brief. In a matter of seconds, she announced, "It was Mr. Fu's call. He said he has some urgent business to deal with. You shouldn't expect him for dinner." "Okay."
Rachel nodded her head and gave a cold smile. She had so many questions for him. She was dying to know what was keeping him busy. However, the only thing she could do was suppress these urges. But nobody thought this emergency would keep him away from home for several days.
Even Julie couldn't help but ask, "Miss, why don't you call Mr. Fu and ask when he will come back?"
"That won't be required," Rachel said indifferently. She flipped through the medical book in her hand and tried to look focused.
By now, Julie knew Rachel didn't like it when people pressed her. Having no other choice, she let go of the matter. Julie noticed that the TV was on. Since nobody was watching it, she reached for the remote, getting ready to turn it off. Just then, something caught her attention. Her eyes became wide open. Pointing her finger at the TV, she called out, "Miss, Mr. Fu..." Her voice faltered. In the television screen, a crowded site was shown. Plenty of people surrounded the area. Utter shock was evident on all of their faces. The scene was the epitome of chaos.
With her hands on her waist, Rachel slowly stood up. Her calm face turned livid and her eyes widened in shock.
The reality came crashing in. Jack, who had called them a while ago, was now in the nearby city. On his way back, his car crashed with a tourist bus. The news that was shown on the TV was live. Jack lay limp on the stretcher, his body splattered in blood. He was being sent to the ambulance.
Her limbs became weak. The sight on TV was too gruesome. Unable to take it, Rachel closed her eyes. After a while, she opened them again. She had thought she was dreaming. However, the news on TV remained the same. In a trembling voice, she asked, "Julie, did they show Jack on TV?"
"Yes, it was him." Julie shivered with fear.
Feeling her legs go weak, Rachel fell on the sofa. Julie hurried to hold her arm and asked, "Miss, are you okay?"
"I'm fine." She took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down. She signaled to Julie to bring her phone from the tea table.
Looking at the hospital number shown on the screen, she dialed it with her trembling fingers. After talking to them, it was confirmed that the person was indeed Jack. Tears slid down her chin.
A friend of Jonathan had sent him a potted orchid two days ago. Now that he had a lot of spare time in his hands, he indulged in raising flowers at home.
Tracy sat next to them, peeling walnuts and putting them in an empty bowl. "The walnuts we brought are extremely good. I'll peel them today and feed them to Jack along with eggs. It will improve his health." "Heath? What's wrong with him? I think he has been doing well these days," said Jonathan in a deep voice.
Tracy disagreed. "Our son seems to be strong on the surface. But deep down, he isn't doing that well. The other day I caught him sitting motionlessly near the window. These walnuts will do some good to his mental health as well."
Jonathan listened silently and didn't utter a word. Soon, his mind went back to the orchid. He started wondering if he should move this orchid into his room in the evening.
After a while, Tracy realized Jonathan was lost in his own world, paying no attention to her words. Pulling the corners of her mouth, she said angrily, "I'm going on and on but you are paying me no attention. Di you even hear what I said?" "Of course, keep going," Jonathan answered, trying to hide his guilt.
Tracy rolled her eyes at him. "Then tell me, what did I say just now?"
In truth, Jonathan didn't hear anything. He coughed awkwardly and tried to think of an excuse. At this moment, the telephone in the room rang. He rushed over saying, "I have to answer the call. It must be important, you never know!" Internally, he thanked the caller for rescuing him from this situation.
Tracy curled her lips and murmured, "The older you are, the better you are at fooling people!"
On the other side, when Jonathan walked into the room and picked up the phone, he heard a lady's voice. "Hello, are you Jack Fu's family?"
"Yes, I am," he replied, unable to hide his confusion. 'Who could it be?' he wondered. He told himself perhaps she was Jack's mistress or something.
"This is the hospital. Mr. Fu had a car accident and is being rescued in our hospital. Please come here as soon as possible. Some operation agreements require your signature.
Sir, are you still there?
Hello?"
Tracy continued to peel the walnuts. It had been about ten minutes since Jonathan left. Wondering who had called, she decided to check. She got up and walked to the hall. She saw that Jonathan was sitting on the sofa, pale and bloodless. The telephone receiver fell aside and she could vaguely hear a woman speaking.
Her heart skipped a beat. "What's wrong?" she asked with some trepidation.
Jonathan didn't answer. His breathing became heavy. All this made Tracy anxious. The maid, noticing his condition, quickly brought a glass of water along with some pills. Once he took the pills, the blood gradually returned to his face.
When he spoke, he sounded old. "It's a call from the hospital. Jack had a car accident and is being rescued."
As a doctor, the hospital was the most familiar place for Rachel. In fact, she had spent her time there more than her own house. She was used to seeing birth, death and illness. All this while, she was under the impression that she had been strong. But today, she wasn't a doctor. She was the patient's wife. On the way, she bit her lips, trying to contain her tears. Everything was crumbling apart. Any second, she could lose her consciousness.
She staggered to the resuscitation room, followed by Julie who begged her to slow down. But Rachel turned deaf ear to her words. She only came to a standstill when she reached the resuscitation room. Julie finally caught up with her and stood beside her, worry etched on her face.
The resuscitation room was bustling with people. After all, there were twenty-four people on the bus. Almost everyone present had some kind of injury. Their family members were waiting anxiously to hear from the doctors.
Patting Julie's hand on her arm, Rachel said in a low voice, "I'm fine. Don't worry."
She took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down. Mustering up some courage, she walked into the resuscitation room and looked around. Jack was nowhere to be found.
When a nurse saw the two of them, she stopped and asked, "Which patient's family are you? I'll take you there."
"Jack Fu." Rachel said his name slowly.
The nurse looked down at the record book in her hand, and then looked up at her. "Jack Fu has been shifted to the operating room. Once you are out of this room, walk straight and you will come across the operating room."
After expressing her gratitude, Rachel walked towards the operating room. Jonathan and Tracy were sitting outside.
Jonathan looked up at her and said, "Here you are." His voice was bereft of any emotions. At the moment, he felt numb. Tracy widened her eyes in shock and asked, "When did you come back?"
Jonathan had known that Tracy hated Rachel for leaving with informing them. On top of that, Jack spent his days in gloom. The fact that her son was torturing himself made Tracy's hatred for her quite strong. Hence Jonathan didn't mention Rachel or anything related to her. However, he had been waiting for a suitable opportunity to talk about it. He didn't expect that they would meet her in such an occasion.
"Some time ago," Rachel replied, not meeting Tracy's eyes. The three of them didn't speak for a while. Rachel's gaze went on Jonathan, trying to gauge his reaction. She knew he was hurting inside. "What did the doctor say? How is Jack?" she asked.
"Two ribs are broken, and his artery has been damaged. Thankfully, the bleeding isn't bad. This is all they told us." Normally, Jonathan looked energetic and lively. But presently, his face was haggard and yellow. His eyes were like a dry well, and his eyebrows were tightly knitted.
The mere sight of him made Rachel want to cry. Fortunately, Julie was behind her and held her, seeing she was losing it. She said worriedly, "Miss, you'd better sit down on the side."
Tracy looked up, staring at her slightly swollen belly. She frowned and asked, "Are you pregnant?"
"Yes, she is almost four months pregnant," Julie answered as she helped Rachel sit down on the chair
Four months pregnant! Julie's words reverberated in Tracy's mind. Four months ago, Rachel and Jack were happily planning their wedding.
In simpler words, the baby in her belly belonged to Jack!
Tracy's heart skipped a beat. Immediately, she shifted her gaze and looked at Jonathan, who was sitting next to her. He didn't seem surprised. 'Could he have known?' she wondered. "Did you know about it?" she asked.
Jonathan replied, "Yes, I came to know about it a few days ago."
Sitting on the chair, Rachel finally calmed herself down. Every now and then, her eyes fell Jonathan and Tracy. She knew Tracy was surprised and looking for answers. But she had no time to worry about anything. After all, Jack's life was in danger. At the moment, that was all she cared about.
She kept waiting for the door to open. It felt like hours had passed since she had sat here. Her body was slowly turning stiff.
When she closed her eyes, even for a second, Jack's smiling face would come in front of her eyes. His beautiful smile was teasing and hurting her. 'Please be alright, Jack,' she prayed as tears slid down her chin. Author's note
