My Darling, My Dearest -
Chapter 446 Where Are You Now
Seeing that Scarlett had returned to normal, Kailey breathed a sigh of relief. Thinking about the reason why she came here today, she said, "You know, Scarlett, our bar has been open for a week and is doing quite well. We have already started thinking about opening a branch. Would you like to invest more money?"
"I don't have any money," Scarlett said in a cold voice.
This struck Kailey as comical. As if she had heard a funny joke, she began to laugh. Composing herself, she said, "Come on now, how come you don't have any money? If you ever run out of money, you can always ask Jack for it. You have to seize this opportunity and make more money. This is the only way for us to become rich. And besides, even if you marry a rich man, you should have a career of your own. Be smart, Scarlett. Secure your future!"
These words were like needles that successfully stabbed Scarlett's heart. But she wouldn't show her vulnerable side to her cousin. Biting her lower lip, she said, "I don't need a secure future. I just want back the money I have invested in your bar. I will take that and leave."
Seeing the startled look on Kailey's face, she continued, "Didn't you say that you're making a profit already? You could start paying me back with that money. If not the full amount, at least give me half of it now."
As soon as Kailey realized that Scarlett was serious about not giving her more, she rose to her feet. With her hands on her head, she cried and begged, "But I need that amount for other things. For example, I have to pay the workers. It isn't possible for me to give it to you now."
"Kailey, you must have money with you. Give me some money first," Scarlett said. She was used to spending a lot. Now that Jack had taken back the two credit cards from her, she was almost penniless. Upon hearing that, Kailey's eyes widened. "Well...I don't have any money right now. It suddenly occurred to me that I still have something important to do. I am leaving." With that, she left. Being a selfish woman, she was here for Scarlett's money. But if Scarlett didn't have anything to offer, she had no intention of wasting her time.
Although Jack had moved back, he barely got to see Rachel. Smartly, she would flee from the home when he was in. And at night, she would lock her room before he could get a chance to enter. All in all, she had planned carefully and hardly came face to face with him.
After resting at home for a day, Rachel felt much better and went back to work. Not long after she sat down, Celia pushed the office door open and asked, "Rachel, are you busy? If not, may I come in?" "Come in." Rachel was a little surprised. Celia wasn't the formal type. Normally, she didn't need any permission to enter. 'What's up with her?' Rachel thought curiously.
Putting down the documents in her hands, Rachel found Celia sit on the sofa in a very ladylike fashion. She had her legs crossed and her head straight. The doubts in Rachel's heart intensified on noticing the sudden shift in her behavior. "What is wrong with you?"
"Rachel..." Celia trailed off. It looked like she was too ashamed to say what was bothering her
Seeing her like this, Rachel found herself in an awkward position. "Celia, can you please behave normally? Come clean and tell me what is bothering you! Curiosity is killing me."
As soon as she finished speaking, Celia sighed heavily. She leaned back, stretched out her hands and began to relax, letting go of her refined manners. Slouching on the sofa, she confessed, "I am afraid Marcus' family won't like me. But now that I am marrying him, I want to do something that will make me fit in."
'That makes sense!' Rachel thought with a smile. The puzzle had been solved.
"You almost scared me, Celia. The way you behaved earlier was too weird."
"I know, but isn't that how I should behave? Will they want a silly daughter-in-law? I am supposed to have dinner with the Ji family tonight. Just the mere thought of it makes me scared. Look, my hands are shaky already!" To prove her point, she placed her trembling hands on the table, showing Rachel she was speaking the truth.
"Oh Celia! You are thinking way too much. Just relax, will you?" Looking at the distressed look on Celia's face, Rachel tried her best to hold back her laughter. Even though it seemed funny to her, she knew Celia was genuinely scared.
Celia rubbed her face with her hands and nodded. Then she looked up at Rachel and asked, "Rachel, are you free at noon? Will you come to shopping with me? I don't think I have any clothes that will be appropriate for today's dinner."
Rachel had planned to take a good rest in the office at noon, but when she saw the pleading look in Celia's eyes, she couldn't refuse. Her heart softened and she agreed.
After lunch, she went to a shopping mall near the hospital with Celia. They went to a brand shop from which she often shopped.
Sitting on the sofa, Rachel saw Celia pick a dress she liked. Bringing it close to Rachel, she asked, "Do you think this dress will look fine on me?"
"Nice selection, but don't take any risk. Go to the fitting room and see how it looks," replied Rachel. Celia found a suitable size and entered the fitting room. In seconds, she was out. Shaking her head, she said to Rachel, "No, it looks horrible on me."
"Then let's go to another shop." Looking at her drooping head, Rachel chuckled and rubbed her head. "We just started shopping. There are so many stores here. I am sure one of them will have what you are looking for. Don't give up so easily."
The two of them walked out of the clothing store, chatting and laughing. They didn't notice the figure that was standing behind a pot of green plants, observing them.
Gritting her teeth in anger, Scarlett glared Rachel's receding figure. Overwhelmed with both sadness and jealousy, she looked at her culprit.
'It is indeed a small world,' she thought with a mocking smile. She was here for a peaceful meal and was unlucky enough to see her enemy.
Trying to forgot all about Rachel, she entered the store she often visited. The shop assistant held several new arrivals of this season in her hands and said, "Miss, these clothes will look amazing on you. Would you like to try them on?"
"No, thanks." She had visited this area to buy some bread to fill her stomach, but she ended up entering this store.
Since she was a frequent customer of this shop, every shop assistant there knew her well. In the past, Scarlett would ask the shop assistant to pack the clothes without even looking at them. But now, thinking of her financial situation, she deliberately picked up one of the dresses, glanced at it, and pretended to be critical. "These dresses will make me look a little fat. I don't think they are for me. You'd better put them back."
"Of course, if you don't like them, I will put these back. But we have different styles that may match your taste," the shop assistant insisted. Customers like Scarlett were very useful for their store.
Biting her lips, Scarlett thought for a while and asked, "I am sorry, I don't want to see anymore clothes. But I have a question for you."
"Miss, what's the matter?"
Scarlett hesitated for a few seconds and said, "I bought a lot of new clothes from your shop, and the tags are still there. Can I return them?"
'Return?' the assistant thought and was shocked. The expression on her face immediately changed. With a changed attitude, she said, "No, once the goods are sold, they cannot be returned."
Then she hung up the clothes in their right place and went to the cashier's desk. She whispered to the other shop assistants, "Has she been dumped? She just asked me if her clothes could be returned. How disgusting!" "Probably. I mean look at her. She didn't buy a single cloth nor is she looking at any."
Although their voices were very low, Scarlett had heard it all. Clenching her fists, she recalled the smile on Rachel's face she had noticed a while ago. She was pregnant and Jack loved her with all his heart. Her life was all settled.
'Why is destiny being fair to her but unfair to me?' Scarlett thought. Rachel had everything she wanted. And now, she was being looked down upon by shop assistants. Unable to take the humiliation, she sprinted out of the shop.
After shopping for nearly an hour, Celina finally bought a light yellow dress.
However, Celia still seemed a bit uneasy. Wearing the dress, she kept looking at herself dubiously. "Rachel, is this dress really okay? Why do I still feel that I am not elegant enough?"
"Of course it is, you look beautiful." Seeing Celia wasn't convinced, Rachel asked, "Don't you believe in my taste? Celia, please be confident."
"If you say so, Rachel." Celia still looked flustered. She sighed deeply, took Rachel's hand and said, "My heart is beating so fast! It might jump out of my breast any second."
As soon as she finished speaking, both of their phones rang. Rachel and Celia looked down and seemed a bit confused.
The two walked to a quiet place and answered the call. "What's up?" asked Rachel coldly.
Jack replied in a soft voice, "Where are you now? I'll pick you up. I think we should go to the mall and buy a bed for our baby. What do you say?"
"No, thanks," Rachel said, refusing his offer instantly.
Two days ago, she had casually mentioned to Julie her desire to buy a beautiful bed for the baby. It seemed that Julie must have told him about it. 'I need to tell Julie to keep our conversations a secret,' Rache thought with some annoyance.
Jack wouldn't keep the phone. He asked, "Where are you now?"
Rachel lied, "I'm having a meeting outside."
But as soon as Rachel said that, Jack's smiling face appeared before her. Out of shock, she nearly dropped the phone. "So is this where you are having the meeting?" he asked.
Behind him, she caught sight of Marcus. Rachel understood what was going on. Instead of panicking, she calmed down and said, "I'm going to have a meeting in about ten minutes." "But I just called your director and asked for leave for you." Jack shook his phone in his hand.
"You!" Rachel opened her eyes wide. "Stop bothering me!" "I am sorry, but I just can't do that." Jack shrugged his shoulders and looked straight into her eyes. Seeing Celia and Marcus walking towards them, he quickly put his hand on her waist. Flashing them a smile, he whispered into Rachel's ear, "If you don't want your friends to worry about you, then you should look happy, understand?" 'Shit! How dare he threaten me!' But Rachel stopped struggling.
Deep down she knew he had a point. If Celia noticed something, she would instantly pass the information to Lea. Since Lea was pregnant, it wasn't right for her to be stressed. If something happened to the baby in her belly, Rachel wouldn't be able to forgive herself.
Holding Marcus' arm, Celia walked over. She had a big smile plastered on her face. Her earlier look of worry was replaced with confidence. When she was with Marcus, all her worries disappeared. "Rachel, Marcus and I are leaving, we still have something to do."
"Okay, see you."
