My Darling, My Dearest -
Chapter 463 Attending The Wedding
Rachel felt embarrassed when she heard what Julie said. Her face was flushed and she was a little red behind the ears. She quickly turned her eyes to the floor and hurried upstairs to change clothes. Rachel headed downstairs as soon as she got changed. Standing beside the stairs, Tracy tugged lightly on Rachel's dress. "You bought this dress a long time ago, haven't you?" she asked. "Well, I just got this a week ago," Rachel answered in a quiet voice.
She bought the dress when she went shopping with Lea last time. Her belly grew larger recently, and so the clothes she bought some time ago didn't fit anymore. She bought this dress a size larger than usual to make sure it would fit. Even still, it already felt a little tight just a week after buying it. The last thing she'd want was another dress left to gather dust in the wardrobe.
"Just a week ago? Why do I think you bought it a long time ago? How about this? It's the weekend tomorrow. Go shopping with me, and we'll get more clothes for you." Tracy frowned. Sitting on the sofa, Jonathan overheard the two talking. He took a sip of his tea and urged Rachel to agree. "That's a good idea. Go with her and buy whatever you like. I'll pay for it."
"See, he's never been that generous with me before!" Tracy grumbled, pretending to be displeased. "Now we can buy all the things we want." "What are you talking about?" Bewildered, Jonathan pointed at Tracy. "Didn't I give you all the cards and money you used for shopping before?"
"No, you didn't. It was our son who gave them to me!" she teased.
Rachel tried to intervene in their argument but failed. After a while, she interrupted, "I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I don't have time tomorrow. I'm going to attend the wedding of my classmate from junior high school." "Are you sure?" Tracy raised her eyebrows at Rachel. Jack had just come in when Rachel nodded in agreement. Tracy turned to Jack and prodded, "Your wife is going to attend the wedding tomorrow. Surely you're coming with her, right?"
"Oh, yes, of course." The question caught Jack by surprise, and he shot a curious glance at his wife. He gestured to his wife as he turned to walk outside towards the yard.
A smile formed on Rachel's face as she followed him. She knew that Jack was intrigued by her decision to attend the wedding and that he badly wanted to know why. Tracy joined Jonathan on the sofa. She saw a bank card tucked in the pocket of her dress. "Why are you giving me the card?" She looked at him blankly.
Jonathan looked puzzled. "Well, you just said you are going shopping tomorrow. You can use this card."
"Hey." Tracy handed the card back and poked him in the chest. She sighed at Jonathan's innocence. "You really are getting old. Haven't you still figured out why I said it?"
"Figure out what?" Jonathan scrunched his eyebrows. He became more and more confused as he kept thinking about it.
Tracy pouted. "I was just trying to make Rachel tell me her plan!"
"Really?" As if trying to make sense out of it, Jonathan repeated Tracy's words in his mind. "Why didn't you just ask her directly?"
Tracy casually watched Rachel and Jonathan in the yard. The two sat on stone chairs while they whispered to each other. She moved closer to Jonathan on the sofa and gave him a nudge on the shoulder. "If I didn't ask her to go shopping, how could I get her to tell me that she is going to attend the wedding tomorrow? Don't you see that our son doesn't know at all?"
Jonathan's face still had the same look of confusion. Tracy leaned her head back in resignation. After a while, she straightened herself again and patiently explained, "A lot of people go to weddings in pairs. When Rachel sees this, I don't think she'd still be so indifferent. Especially since pregnant women tend to be softhearted and emotional."
The next morning, Rachel was woken up by a phone call. She heard Lea's anxious voice on the other end. "Hey Rachel, I can't go to Anna's wedding today. Please send a red packet for me. I'll pay you back later."
"Alright, Lea. But is everything okay? Why aren't you coming all of a sudden?" Rachel asked in a concerned voice. She was only half awake now, and she covered her mouth to yawn.
Lea explained in a rush, "Rita caught a cold last night. I didn't think it was that bad, so I just made her a cup of peppermint tea. But then she got a fever and vomited."
"Then you should take her to the hospital as soon as possible," Rachel suggested. She felt wide awake after hearing this.
After being woken up by the phone call, Rachel decided to get up and make breakfast. She washed her face and then went downstairs to the kitchen.
Jack didn't know that she was already up. He knocked on her door a couple of times, but there was no answer. Rachel called out to him from downstairs just as he was about to peek into her room. "Jack come down and have breakfast."
"Why are you up so early?" Jack looked at her, a little surprised.
Rachel took off her apron and turned to Jack. "Only a pig like you sleeps in for so long," she said jokingly.
"Oh, I'm the pig?" Jack straightened his belly on purpose. "Then I fail to be a pig because I can't even compare with your belly."
"How could you say that to your wife?" Tracy's voice came out of nowhere and startled Jack.
He stepped back a little and crossed his arms on his chest. "Mom, why are you up so early as well?"
"Oh nothing, I just went down to give a coat to Rachel," Tracy answered. She took a bite from the apple she held in one hand. She pointed to the bag on the sofa and said, "I went out yesterday and bought this coat for her. It's the perfect outfit for the wedding later."
"Mom, you're so unfair, you know that?" Jack pretended to be jealous, but he was happy for his mother's attitude now.
He walked to the sofa and took the coat out of the bag. The coat was from a designer brand and was obviously well made. "Mom, did you also prepare my coat?" he asked.
"How could I forget?" Tracy pointed to another armchair. "I bought you a suit. Try it on. It should fit you just right."
Jack walked over to the other armchair and held the coat up. He was not so observant of subtle details, but he knew what his mother was trying to do as soon as he saw the suit. His suit and Rachel's coat were almost of the same hue. They were not the same shade, but the similarity was unmistakable.
The corners of Rachel's mouth twitched a little. She agreed to wear the coat to the wedding, but she had no idea how Jack's suit looked like until now.
It would definitely be eye-catching to wear outfits of the same color.
She slowly walked to Jack and looked at the suit. It was now obvious what Tracy was trying to do. She then heard him mutter, "Okay, Mom. I'll put on this suit when we head out." Rachel stamped her feet because she was irritated. But she couldn't lose her temper when she saw Tracy's pleasant, smiling face. She pinched Jack's back really hard instead.
After eating the last bite of the apple, Tracy smiled and pretended not to see what was going on between the two. She chucked the apple core to the trash bin and wiped her hands with a tissue. "I bought those for you today, so you must wear them," she insisted. Her plan's success pleased her very much. "Anyway, I just went down to give you the clothes. I'm going to play mahjong with my friends, so I'm going to head out now."
"Be careful on the road, Mom," Jack reminded her. When Tracy left, Rachel looked menacingly at Jack. "The suit on you is fine. Don't wear that one."
"No way. I just promised Mom," Jack teased.
Rachel looked displeased. "If you insist on wearing that, I'm going to look for another outfit to wear."
"Come on. I was just kidding. I'm not going to wear it." Seeing that she was about to go upstairs, Jack quickly reached out and grabbed her arm. "You know what, I don't really like this color anyway." The smile on Rachel's face was obviously fake.
She was quite annoyed at Jack. "Do you think that's funny?"
She rolled her eyes at him.
The hotel's pristine lawn was a dreamy venue for Anna's garden wedding. It was in an upscale hotel in the western suburbs.
It took a long time for Jack and Rachel to prepare and finally get out of the house. The traffic in the viaduct on the way to the venue delayed them even more. When they arrived, the wedding ceremony had already begun. Pastel-colored flowers adorned the backdrop and sides of the white wooden stage. The simple yet elegant flower arrangements gave the venue a rustic feel. The couple was standing on the stage while the emcee narrated how the two fell in love.
Guests sat on neat rows of white chairs in front of the stage. The seats were already almost full with guests.
A waiter came over to Jack and pointed to the front. "Sir, there are available seats on the second row in front of the stage," he suggested.
"Okay." Jack walked behind Rachel and carefully protected her.
They felt a little weird sitting in the second row because it was mostly family and relatives of the bride and groom there.
Anna stood at the center of the stage beside her father. She looked beautiful holding a bouquet of flowers. Tears of joy welled in her eyes as she savored the moment.
In a gentle voice, the emcee asked, "Groom, do you promise to take care of your bride for the rest of your life? No matter how expensive her bag and clothes are, will you follow her and pay for her? Do you promise to be her sidekick?"
In a usual wedding, these questions would be asked in a solemn manner. But the emcee's way of asking them helped lighten the atmosphere. Author's note
