My Darling, My Dearest -
Chapter 468 Made A Scapegoat
The director lied just like that.
Rachel was stunned upon hearing her words. She stared at the director in shock. "I didn't know about it before. You didn't tell me."
"I didn't?" The director's face darkened. She snorted, "Are you trying to say that it was my fault? I have actually noticed that you're always absentminded these past two days. I don't know what's going on with you, but your work has always been in a mess. Possibly, you have forgotten that I told you about it."
Rachel didn't expect that she would be in such big trouble. After all, she was only told to attend the meeting on behalf of the director. Now that she was relaying everything that happened during the meeting, the director made her a scapegoat.
She was at a loss. Looking at the director's vexed face, she thought that she should be the one to feel aggrieved and angry.
The director picked up the document from the table and threw it to the floor. She then said coldly, "Why are you still standing here? Go and modify this list immediately. Then I'll go with you when you report to the executive. I have to speak for you so he won't get angry." This time, it seemed that the director was concerned for her.
Rachel's mouth twitched. It was not her fault. Even if the director put a knife on her neck, she would never admit it.
If she picked up the document on the floor now and followed the director's order, it would only mean that she acknowledged that she made a mistake. She would only make it appear that the director had nothing to do with it.
She sneered, "I'm sorry, I was not the one who made a mistake. So I won't do it."
The director was stunned. She didn't expect that Rachel would refuse so bluntly. She had to replace someone to take the blame for her, and Rachel was undoubtedly the best choice.
Thus, she sniffed at Rachel's words. After all, she was the director of the executive department, and Rachel was just an employee. She couldn't allow a mere employee to disrespect her. Now, the more she thought of Rachel's cold and indifferent attitude, the more uncomfortable she felt.
However, she tried hard to be tough on Rachel, but it didn't work. Eventually, the director retrained her anger and decided on a civilized approach. "Rachel, I'm sorry if I was a little harsh. But as far as I can remember, I have really informed you about this the moment I knew it. Perhaps you were only busy with your work at that time, so you didn't take it seriously. And since it was almost the deadline, I just took the initiative to help you finish this job. Initially, you were in charge of this task. And since you are free now, I think you can take it over again."
The director changed her sitting position and crossed her legs again. She added, "Now that the executive scolded you, you can't just put the blame on me ungratefully. On the other hand, if he praised you, all the honors would be yours. I wouldn't get any credits from it."
Rachel's face darkened. "Director, I don't care about being praised or honored. Since you were the one who finished and printed out this list, you should take the corresponding responsibility. Rachel's words were quite rude. The director felt like she was slapped in the face.
The expression on the director's face changed at once. Her chest heaved with rage. She thumped the desk with her hands and said, "Since you seem to be firm on your decision, let me tell you clearly. If the higher-ups ask me, I will also say the same. Don't expect me to say good things about you."
Since the director got enraged, she didn't notice that her voice rose almost to a scream. And because the office door was always open, it attracted the attention of the employees outside.
Rachel suddenly felt tired of arguing with the director. Besides, she only came to her office to report about the meeting, and not to fight with her. Now that she had finished giving her the details of the meeting, she didn't care whether the director would change the list or not.
At this time, her heart also started to inflame. She clenched her fists and said coldly, "Excuse me, I have already told you everything about the meeting, so I'm leaving now." Rachel then bowed politely and turned around without even looking at the director's expression.
Several employees poked into the office curiously. But upon seeing Rachel coming out, they quickly pretended to be busy with their own tasks. It was as if they didn't care about what happened inside the office just now.
The director got so furious that she swept everything on her desk. Gritting her teeth, she stared at Rachel's office. Her eyes were full of resentment.
The director had a personal relationship with the CEO of CX Group. When he heard that their hospital would hold an anniversary event, he wanted to be a part of it so he could expand his network. Thus, he sent some money to the director to arrange things for him. As a response, the director promised that she would take care of it.
But she didn't expect that the hospital would pay so much attention to the guest list. During the meeting, several names from it were directly removed and banned from attending the anniversary event. And the CEO of CX Group was one of them.
The director had already accepted the money from the CEO, so she felt embarrassed. Actually, she deliberately put the name in the middle to avoid being noticed by the executive. But unfortunately, it was still found at a glance. She was scolded on the spot and received a lot of harsh words. She was even ruthlessly told that she was incompetent and didn't deserve to be the director of the executive department. Since she failed, she thought of returning the money to the CEO. But to her surprise, the CEO asked for interest. According to him, she received it many days ago, so it was considered as a loan. The worse was, the interest was equivalent to her three years' salary.
Her biggest problem now was where to get such an amount.
There was no other better way. At first, the director thought of manipulating the list again. But when she remembered what happened during the meeting, she suddenly lost the courage to do so. In the end, she decided to use Rachel as her scapegoat.
The director had two reasons why she'd chosen Rachel. Firstly, she disliked Rachel from the very beginning. She thought that this was her chance to take revenge on her.
Secondly, she knew that Rachel had a strong backing in the hospital.
Even if Rachel did something wrong, she wouldn't lose her job. Perhaps the worst punishment she could get was to be scolded slightly.
In the afternoon, Rachel's colleagues, who loved gossip, started to discuss what happened in the director's office earlier. They gathered and talked in a low voice. "Hey, why do you think they had an argument?"
"Maybe it was all about work."
"Of course, we all know that it's about work. But the question is, what happened in our department that could make them fight like that? Rachel was too bold to rush to the director's office. If I were her, I would never dare do it."
"Well, we all know that Rachel has a strong backing in this hospital."
"That's right." "Hey, she coming out of her office."
Before Rachel came out of her office, she saw that her colleagues were gathered together, talking about something. But as soon as they saw her coming out, they immediately dispersed and went back to their desks. They all pretended to be serious about what they were doing.
Although she didn't hear what they were talking about just now, she could already guess. With a cold expression on her face, she took a deep breath. Indeed, her mood was affected by what happened. She didn't expect that attending the meeting for her director would give her so much trouble.
Rachel couldn't help feeling depressed. Recently, she had learned how to get along with other people better than before. Celia even told her that she was much gentler now. But it didn't mean that she would just allow anyone to bully her. She couldn't just take the blame on behalf of others.
Since she had nothing else to do in her office and got bored, she came out of the hospital. She sat down on a stone bench in the garden. At first, she browsed her phone. Later on, she dialed Austin's number. As soon as Austin came out of the meeting room, the secretary rushed to him. With a phone in her hand, she said, "Austin, your mobile phone has been ringing for a long time now. Maybe it's an important call. "Thank you."
Austin took the phone and checked the caller. When he saw the name on the screen, he suddenly felt that his throat dried up. He even wanted to call the secretary and tell her to bring the phone back to his desk.
However, he couldn't be such an ostrich when it had something to do with Jack. After hesitating for a while, he walked to a quieter place and answered the phone. "Miss Shen, what can I do for you?" Rachel said, "Austin, I have something to ask you."
"What is it?"
Rachel pursed her lips. She hesitated for a moment. "Where is Jack now? Why is he not answering my call?"
"Mr. Fu..." Austin paused for a short while before he continued, "Something happened in the branch outside the city, so he went there to deal with it. It may take a long time for him to come back." 'He's on a business trip?' Rachel thought inwardly.
She then said with a frown, "Even if he is on a business trip, he can still have time to answer his phone, right?"
