Jinora

Lycans are terrifying.

Kade’s lycan form must be the ugliest and scariest thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Not only is he large enough to lift cars, but try imagining a hairy man with the head of a wolf—it’s not pretty.

It baffles me because Kade is so elegant and hot in his human form. His face is gorgeous, and his body is swole with muscles. His lycan form is even more muscular, but… it’s to the point of it being intimidating.

I remind myself that this is Kade, the man I love, who is also trying to save my a*s from the vampires chasing us. I relax on his shoulder and try to ignore the feeling of needing to puke.

“I’m so dizzy…” I complain. “You don’t mind if I throw up, do you? I don’t think I can help it…”

Kade growls in response, and I laugh.

“I can’t help it! This is… this is f*****g torture, Kade! I’m bouncing around on your shoulder, and it’s painful!”

He snorts, and I sigh. “Okay, okay, I will try to keep it together! But you have to speed up your pace! The vampires are catching up to us, boy! Run faster! As fast as you can!”

I know that Kade hates being called a boy, but I can’t help myself from treating him like a dog. I like teasing him, and despite my teasing, Kade continues to run past cars on the street.

He jogs past empty buildings but suddenly stops in his tracks. A growl erupts from deep within his throat, turns around at lightning speed, and slashes at a hissing vampire I didn’t even know was there.

Where did it come from? It’s like Kade knew it would attack!

I’m shocked and hold my breath when Kade slips me down from his shoulder. I’m standing beside him, and now I realize why he stopped—we are surrounded by bloodsuckers.

“Are you alone, Kade?”

I shudder when I hear Victoria’s voice and narrow my eyes when she steps out from the shadows. Despite being evil, Victoria reminds me of an angel with her perfectly sculpted face.

How can such a crazy person be so stunning?

Her white hair is in a ponytail, and she loves cat eye makeup. She reminds me of Icy from that Winx club I watched when I was younger.

Beautiful, gorgeous, but batshit crazy—that’s Victoria in a nutshell. I glare at her, but Kade steps ahead of me as if to shield me. His purple eyes are focused on Victoria, who laughs in delight.

“Your alpha isn’t here, and your pack members are fighting my other men in the city. It will take time for them to get here,” Victoria laughs. “This is just perfect. Avery was stupid to send you guys to spy on my men because now I can kill you as a display of strength.”

She clicks her fingers, and vampires lunge at us.

Not good!

I shape-shift into a werewolf, but Kade seems determined to take care of every vampire by himself. On each paw, there are razor-sharp claws that are unrealistically long and used to tear into the vampires with.

Kade’s movements shock me, and even Victoria seems surprised. She is standing to the side, staring at Kade.

“How can he know when they are about to attack—” she gasps, and newfound interest shines in her glowing eyes. “Don’t tell me the lycan has magic abilities too?!”

The response she gets is Kade flinging away a vampire that lands on a car’s windshield. The glass immediately breaks, impaling the vampire with sharp shards. Victoria hisses, and I stand frozen as the car’s alarm is set off. Kade is insanely strong…

“You’re powerful,” Victoria is raking Kade up and down. “I wouldn’t expect anything less from a former alpha lycan, but… how come I sense you have grown more powerful since I last spared against you? That should be impossible, considering you’re an unmated beta.”

Kade growls, and Victoria laughs.

“I can’t understand you, but… it seems that you, too, have a weakness,” her focus shifts to me. “Hello there, little wolf. Do you want to play with the queen of the night?”

Despite my fear, I growl at her. I’m not interested in her games and don’t appreciate her teasing me.

My snarl, of course, doesn’t scare Victoria. She laughs in delight as if my aggression amuses her. It pisses me off. I hate the crazy vampire, and I want her dead. It’s frustrating that I’m not strong enough to put up much of a fight against her.

“You’re vocal for such a helpless little wolf,” Victoria laughs darkly and shows her sharp canine teeth in her smile. “You have found yourself quite the bodyguard. Kade is strong and the largest lycan I’ve seen. Powerful too, but even he can’t keep you safe from me—not when you’re this outnumbered by my men.”

Kade straightens in response to her words, clenching his half-human, half-werewolf-like fingers. Those purple eyes set their full attention on Victoria, who doesn’t have many men left.

She seems to realize this, too, and looks around her. There are a few vampires behind us and a few in front. Her lips curl as if she has an idea, and I snarl a warning seconds before she shoots off.

Victoria is faster than lightning. She is attacking with her vampiric men, who jump at Kade while Victoria lunges for me. I doubt I’m quick enough to avoid her. What do I do?!

There isn’t time to run from the vampire queen!

My eyes close on instinct, but the finishing strike never comes. I count the seconds in my head, and once I open my eyes, I’m met with the most heartbreaking sight I’ve ever faced.

There is a hold through Kade’s chest, and Victoria’s hand is inside him. She has impaled him. Time seems to slow down as she drags out her bloodied arm while laughing like a madwoman.

“What a fool!” Victoria cackles. “The attack was meant for your partner, but you took it instead of her! And now both of you will die!”

Kade flops down onto the ground, and the sight breaks me. My heart shatters into a million pieces, canceling my wolf form. I shape-shift out of emotion and cry out in pain.

The man I love… he is… he is down on the ground, and he isn’t moving. What should I do?!

“Kade…?” I whisper in a broken voice. “Kade, come on… you can’t die here… you wanted to have children… how are you going to become a dad if you won’t get up?”

There is no response.

I laugh, but the sound is unhappy. “Come on, Kade… you can’t just leave me here… get up…”

He still isn’t moving.

Tears form in the corner of my eyes. Victoria is talking, but I can’t hear her. All I’m focusing on is Kade, and I fall to my knees. I’m surrounded by vampires, but I don’t give a damn!

I lift Kade’s head into my lap and cry my heart out. I’m choking on tears and can’t focus on anything else. Victoria smirks at me, but I won’t move even as she steps closer.

“What a fool he was to sacrifice himself for you!” Victoria laughs and clenches her clawed hands. “Because now you will die together!”

Victoria is readying herself to tear me apart. I hear her, but do I even want to live at this point?
