Josie

I sneak off to the back of the bleachers, needing just a moment to get my ridiculous jealousy under control. Because that’s what it is—absurd and foolish! Misha is my mate, and he deserves to be happy about his victory!

Ugh, why am I like this?

I walk over the grass and freeze once I’m behind the bleachers. Everyone is watching the alpha tournament, so I doubt anyone else will come back here, but what I see still shocks me.

Blaze is pushing a woman into the back of the bleachers. She is tangled around him, laughing at the nips and k****s he is giving her. Her pants are pushed down to her knees, and Blaze’s c**k is deep inside her.

Sexy time, huh?

At first, I’m about to turn away from the scene, but then the woman’s eyes widen. She looks close to screaming, but Blaze silences her by kissing her harder.

And then it happens. The woman’s black hair is turning grey, and the golden skin on her body is getting wrinklier. It’s like she is aging before my eyes, or if I’m seeing someone through that Instagram filter. But this is real life—Blaze is sucking the life force from her!

Horror grips me, especially since he doesn’t stop there. Blaze doesn’t settle by making her older. He continues to take and take until the woman turns to a few ashes carried by the wind.

I should probably run, but I’m paralyzed by fear. It’s as if my feet have grown their own gnarled roots and stuck them in the ground. I can’t move, only shudder as Blaze’s orange eyes meet mine.

He smiles, but it’s far from friendly. It’s deranged, and I’m forced to tilt my head as he walks closer.

“Oh, aren’t you the mate of that ice alpha?” Blaze asks with too much curiosity for my liking.

He is pulling up his pants now and coming closer with anything but friendly intentions.

I take a step back. “W-what are you?”

His smile grows larger. “I suppose I can tell you since I plan on taking your life force too. You see, little lycan… I don’t have a mate, but my pack thinks I do. It’s more manageable to brainwash those poor pack members into thinking I do since they won’t fear me.”

I swallow thickly, and miraculously enough, I replace my voice. “T-that doesn’t answer my question…”

He stops in front of me. “I’m a hybrid, like you. My brothers and I have incubus b***d running in our veins. I grow stronger from having s*x and taking from my victim’s life force or from my own… only my true mate can handle me without dying, but I don’t wish to replace her. She might make me strong, but she will also make me weak. So here I am, taking the life force from innocent women.”

Before I have time to react, I’m pushed against the back of the bleachers with Blaze staring down into my eyes. His are orange and glowing, and his hair is redder than b***d.

He looks like a demon too…

“You came just in time to feed me…”

Blaze’s breath hits my face. He is beautiful, but his mouth reeks of death and rot. He leans forward, gripping my hair’s tip to play with.

I shudder and can’t replace any words. I’ve never considered myself a scaredy-cat, but this guy just made a woman disappear into thin air! How can I not be afraid of him?!

“Ah, you’re afraid of me. Fear not. This will soon be over,” Blaze murmurs in a dark tone. “With a hybrid’s life force, I can’t imagine just how powerful I will become, and you’re not claimed—perfect. I can’t take from those who are.”

I stare into his eyes, shrieking when he bends down to k**s me. I lift my arm, ready to punch him, but he easily grabs it. He is strong—I can’t make him budge no matter how hard I try.

s**t.

I don’t want to grow old!

Blaze’s lips are coming even closer, and I shut my eyes while my heart crashes against my chest. Thunk-thunk-thunk. Is this how it ends? I whimper and shed a tear. Please-please-please, save me!

“Leave her alone, brother!”

Blaze jerks away from me, and when I open my eyes, I replace him glaring to the side. “Good little brother Elijah, here to save the day… I should have figured that you would show up. Did you bring Sky with you, or is it just one of my brothers here to stop me?” He snorts. “Not that you stand a chance against me.”

Little brother?

I turn my head sideways and freeze. Is that his little brother?! But the other guy looks so much older! Despite looking good, the man seems to be in his later forties. He has greying hair and a few wrinkles here and there, and it makes no sense for him to be the little brother!

But wait… didn’t Blaze say an incubus could also use its own life force for magic? Perhaps that’s why Elijah looks older—he has used his own life force for his magic rather than stealing it from others.

“Sky isn’t with me,” Elijah says.”

“Why not?” Blaze asks. “You two love to gang up on me…”

“Sky is too young to be brought into your foolish games. I don’t want him to see what you’ve turned into!” Warm brown eyes meet mine, and Elijah sighs as if it pains him to see me tortured. “And please, for the love of the moon goddess, let the poor woman go!”

“No!” Blaze growls and grips my upper arm, sinking his sharp claws into my skin. It burns. “This is the mate of my enemy—if I let them mate, he will be harder to take down! I have to take her life force!”

Oh my god, this guy is absolutely insane! Yesterday, I was unsure if demons even existed, and now this one here wishes to take my life force! What have I gotten myself into?

Blaze opens his disgusting mouth again, and that’s when my sanity returns. Demons are the scariest creatures on this planet, yet I manage to kick him—right in the crotch!

“Motherfuc—” Blaze’s moment of weakness gave me a chance to hurry past him. He doesn’t chase me but yells at his brother. “Grab her, Elijah! Don’t let her escape! We can’t have her spreading what we are!”

“And why should I help you?!” Elijah barks.

“Because I’m your brother!”

Elijah g****s and massages his eyelids with his fingers. “You can’t always pull the damn family card, Blaze. It’s not fair.”

“This time, I can because you OWE me, brother!”

Elijah freezes up in that damn-he-is-right way and looks at me with sadness etched into his features.

Not good. Will Elijah help his brother? Elijah doesn’t seem like a bad person, but to my utter astonishment, he grabs me by the shoulders. He is tall, and his face is kind, but I know without asking that he is playing for the other team right now.

“Let go of me!” I try to fight Elijah, but when I meet his glowing brown eyes, I feel my consciousness slipping away. I stand still and gaze deeply into them, spellbound.

“Shhh…” Elijah smiles into my face. “You will forget what Blaze did to the woman and return to your mate. Yes, you may remember our names, but not what we are. Forget that we are demons.”

I repeat his words. “Forget that you are demons…”

“That’s right… now you should go to your mate.”

Yes… he is right. I should replace Misha. What was I doing here again? I was jealous of Misha, and then I saw Blaze. He was… what? I am trying to remember what he was doing, but I can’t.

“She might remember this eventually…” Elijah mutters while holding my shoulders. “There is magic in her veins as well…”

“Really?” Blaze sounds surprised. “But isn’t she a werewolf and a lycan? The wolves usually don’t have magic…”

“This one has ancient lycan b***d. The woman is of royal b***d…” Elijah peers into my eyes again. “Go to your mate.”

He releases me, and I walk past him. I get the feeling I’ve forgotten something important, but for now, I will focus on replaceing Misha. I’m sure I will remember… eventually.
