Chapter 1699 We Might Bump Into Him

"All right." Elijah nodded. "Could you kindly pass the fruits and flowers to the mentor on my behalf?"

Sally looked at Elijah with sympathy.

The senior monk placed his palms together. "Of course."

"Thank you," Elijah responded in kind, returning the gesture.

A complex expression crossed the senior monk's face.

After a moment of silence, he inquired, "Have you been well?"

"Thank you for your concern. Everything's been good." Elijah hesitated before adding, "How is the mentor's health?"

"Much improved."

"That's good to hear," Elijah smiled and exhaled softly. "You should get back to your duties. We'll take our leave."

"You're just in time for the communal meal in the dining hall. Why not join us before you leave?" Brad suggested, trying to stop the departing couple.

"Oh, I am hungry!" Sally quickly interjected.

Soon after, Elijah led Sally to the dining hall.

Along the way, they encountered a few visitors and several cheerful-looking little monks.

Sally, watching this, imagined the carefree days Elijah must have had here as a younger monk.

"I wonder what debt I owed you in a past life. You saved my life and, in return, brought trouble upon yourself," Sally mused.

If Elijah had remained a monk and continued his practices in the monastery, he surely wouldn't have had as many troubles as he did now.

Elijah pinched her hand. "Choosing to leave the monastery was my decision. Don't put that burden on yourself."

Sally remained silent.

Upon reaching the dining hall, they served themselves modest portions and sat in a corner to eat.

Sally quickly understood why Elijah, as a child, didn't prefer the monastery food. It was rather bland.

"The head chef of the dining hall hasn't changed, has he?" Elijah commented with a wry smile after taking a bite.

Seeing Elijah smile lightened Sally's mood.

"So, I've tasted your childhood now?" She teased.

Elijah laughed heartily.

"How do you always come up with such quirky thoughts?"

"You don't like them?" Sally asked, her eyes twinkling mischievously.

Elijah affectionately nodded. "I love them."

Elijah seemed to have anticipated this, so he took only a small amount of food, but as they chatted, he finished everything.

Sally noticed volunteers cleaning up and washing dishes. She eagerly offered to help, and Elijah, not one to stand by, joined in. Once they finished, Sally sat with the volunteers, sipping coffee and inquiring about volunteering for longer periods.

Upon hearing this, Elijah apologized to the volunteers and gently pulled Sally aside.

"You want to volunteer?"

"Maybe stay a few more days. The monastery isn't that big. We might bump into him," Sally murmured, her eyes downcast.

She knew Elijah wasn't one to force matters, especially with his respected mentor.

Yet, leaving with regrets wasn't something he'd be content with either.

"We won't be visiting just this once," Elijah assured, caressing her cheek. "We'll come back regularly until the mentor agrees to see me." "Really?"

Sally's eyes sparkled with hope.

Elijah nodded. "So, still want to volunteer?"

"Yes!" Sally replied without hesitation, "I don't have any specific places I want to visit in the next few days anyway. Let's stay here. Show me around and share stories from your childhood. Sounds good?"
