Chapter 2012 What Child?

Athena didn't linger any longer. Taking Byron's arm, she left the hospital directly.

As it was nearing the time for Aiden and Mia to finish school, Byron said they would pick up the kids and go home together. Athena agreed. Throughout the journey, she did her best to seem normal. However, Byron could still sense her unease.

Usually, they would pick up Mia first, but today, Athena and Byron went to get Aiden first.

Aiden was a bit stunned when he saw his parents waiting for him.

Byron waved to him with a smile. "Aiden, come quickly! We're going to pick up your sister together."

Usually taking his time, Aiden hurried over upon hearing this. "Didn't we agree to pick up Mia first? It's not good to let her wait alone."

Even though he said this, Athena could see that he was delighted.

"Dad, what happened to your hand?" Aiden's attention shifted to Byron's bandaged hand, his little face crinkling in concern.

"I was careless and got cut by a small ceramic shard in the bathroom," Byron bent down to explain to his son. "I'm sorry for making you worry, Aiden. I'll be more careful next time." Aiden nodded, then looked at Athena, who quickly gave him a reassuring smile. But deep down, she wondered how she would explain Byron's illness to Aiden and Mia.

Not wanting his sister to wait, Aiden quickly got into the car.

By the time they arrived to pick up Mia, she had been waiting for about twenty minutes. However, this did not dampen Mia's spirits.

As soon as she saw Byron step out of the car, she sprinted towards him, shouting, "Daddy!"

Byron squatted down and gave her a big hug.

"I'm so glad you picked up brother first today! Finally, you listened to my advice!" She laughed. "Dad, in two days, we can go camping. My friends are so envious! I'm the only one not attending tuition classes this weekend!"

Watching the father-daughter duo from the car, Athena felt a pang in her heart, making it difficult to breathe.

Once inside the car, Mia noticed Byron's bandaged hand and bombarded him with worried questions. After replaceing out it wasn't serious, she relaxed and chided. "Daddy, don't get hurt again! All three of us will be worried about you!"

"Alright. Daddy will listen to Mia," Byron replied.

"No, Daddy should listen to mommy! I listen to mommy, and so does Aiden!"

Athena smiled gently at her daughter. No matter how tough the road ahead, she had to persevere, especially for Aiden and Mia.

With Mia's cheerful presence, the atmosphere in the car lightened considerably. Even the heaviness in Athena's heart was somewhat lifted.

Once they arrived at Lakin, Athena excused herself with the pretext of having some work to do and headed to the study alone.

She was staring blankly at the computer when Evie called.

"Athena, I checked the surveillance footage you asked for..." Evie's voice was somber, "How could this..."

"What did you see?" Athena's voice was raspy.

"There indeed was an incident at that location. The camera's view was obstructed by tree shade, so not much was captured. But I found the person responsible for Byron's injury that day..." It was outside the bathroom that Athena had contacted Evie when waiting for Byron.

As soon as Evie received the call, she immediately had someone look into it.

She knew about the incident where Byron got injured trying to save a child, as he had hidden it from Athena but not from Aron.

However, when she contacted the involved party, the response was, "What child? What child was there at that time? That gentleman just suddenly ran out, startling me. He was a nutcase..."
