Chapter 1987 Being Worldly Wise

Kaylee felt her head spinning.

So, the elderly woman being supported by Elisa is Julia. Did I just end up flattering the wrong person?

Suddenly, her world turned dark, and her smile froze on her lips.

Julia leisurely took her seat at the head of the table. She gently patted Elisa’s hand, signifying their close

relationship.

This made Kaylee’s face turn even paler.

After Julia sat down, it was then that Maria laughed and said, “Well, that’s not true. It’s just that the young lady

simply mistook me for you, Madam Smith.”

Kaylee’s face was turning pale even more.

Doesn’t this imply that I’m someone who curries favor for the sake of fame and fortune?

So, Kaylee could only force a couple of awkward laughs, attempting to salvage her image.

“No… That’s not it. I genuinely feel a connection with you.”

Maria laughed, evidently skeptical, but chose not to call it out.

But now, in this situation, calling it out or not wasn’t that important anymore.

All those present grasped the situation without the need for verbal explanation; only Kaylee remained on the

outside.

Bella’s lips curled up in a smile, one that she couldn’t suppress even if she tried.

Kaylee felt embarra*sed, her face burning with shame.

Fortunately, Julia didn’t ignore her.

“Who are you?” she asked.

Given the opportunity to speak, Kaylee naturally seized it.

So, with a hint of shyness and hesitation, she said, “I-I am a friend of Mr. Wickam and Ms. Benett. We met in the

mountains.”

Kaylee was a smart woman. She didn’t emphasize that she was the one who saved Elisa’s life, but Julia would

eventually replace out about it, or perhaps she already knew.

Sure enough, Julia curved her lips into a smile and said, “Missy, I’ve heard about you. You’re the one who saved

Elisa’s life, aren’t you?”

But Kaylee couldn’t muster a smile.

The way Julia was holding Elisa’s hand was clear she was expressing gratitude on behalf of a younger family

member to their savior.

After everything Kaylee did, she was still an outsider.

Moreover, what was tricky was that the relationship between Julia and Elisa was surprisingly good… This is

really a miscalculation on my part. I’m not sure if my future plans can proceed smoothly $

Kaylee’s face contorted and she uttered somewhat stiffly, “No need to thank

Julia changed the subject. “I heard that Gareth has already arranged everything for you, from a job to food and

accommodation. What’s the matter, young lady? Is there something you’re not satisfied with?”

In contrast, Julia always addressed her grandson by his name.

Her favoritism toward Elisa was clearly evident.

Now that Julia had posed the question like that, it made it even harder for Kaylee to voice it out.

Julia had mentioned that Kaylee had a job, a place to live in, and money on her card.

At this juncture, if Kaylee were to voice discontent, wouldn’t that be taking advantage of the situation, thereby

solidifying her reputation as a self-serving and acquisitive individual?

Thus, Kaylee found herself in a predicament where she could neither speak nor remain silent.

The atmosphere became somewhat awkward for a moment.

If it weren’t for the inappropriateness, Bella would have burst out laughing.

The worldly-wise veteran truly lived up to her reputation. With just a few words, Julia first made Kaylee. feel exalted,

and then abruptly brought her back down to the ground.

This is really satisfying.

Tears gradually welled up in Kaylee’s eyes as she looked at Gareth with a plea for help.

Ever since Elisa arrived, Gareth’s gaze, had never left her.

Kaylee bit her lip, filled with unwillingness. But she also understood that at this moment, she could only rely on

herself.

“I’m truly sorry, Madam Smith. Due to my personality, I’m unable to perform the tasks Elisa has a*signed

to me, so…”
