Her tears suddenly turned into laughter, "Sis, I'm hungry. I really want some porridge." "Sure, I'll get you some," I immediately responded. "Do you want any meat with it?"

She used to love meat, always talking about dieting whenever she indulged.

"Meat is good for you, right? Let's have some then," Deborah was still her cheeky self.

But seeing her like this only made my heart ache more. Despite the obvious pain, she didn't forget to smile, and I smiled back, playing along. "Alright, I'll get your favorite braised pork."

"I want it with a bit of fat and lean," she insisted, demanding perfection in her meal as always.

"Got it, I'll pick the best and biggest piece," I said as I stood up to leave.

However, I didn't immediately leave after stepping out the door. Instead, I stood by the entrance, and soon, I could hear sobbing coming from inside.

Leaning against the wall, my heart twisted in pain for a while before I went to get her food. I didn't expect to run into Conrad here.

Maybe it was the shocking image of him coughing up blood that came to mind upon seeing him, but his presence evoked that vivid memory.

He saw me too, our gazes locked, but neither of us spoke.

Eventually, he walked past me, as if we were strangers who never knew each other.

Ten years of acquaintance, four years of love, and now, strangers.

But time changes everything, and to each other, we're just ordinary people now.

"I'll have an eight-treasure porridge, a braised pork with both lean and fatty parts, and a side salad," I ordered Deborah's favorites.

Knowing she probably couldn't eat much but wanting to get her everything she loved, I also included a dessert.

With the food packed and ready, I left, only to see someone leaning against a car outside.

Even though he had ignored me

before, his

stance now clearly

he was waiting for me.

"Why are you here? Feeling unwell?" Conrad was the first to speak.

Being at the hospital cafeteria, his curiosity was understandable.

I couldn't mention Deborah's situation, and I didn't want to talk about Ernest, so I replied, "Fanny works here."

Conrad glanced at the food I was carrying. "Can't you even tell me the truth anymore?"

Realizing he saw through my lie, I dropped the act. "It's... Phipps got hurt."

Considering Dustin knew, and Allen had seen it, Conrad was likely aware too.

Conrad's expression shifted slightly. Hearing Phipps' name probably reminded him of the time he coughed up blood.

He might have thought with Ernest out of the picture, he had a chance, not

malizing Phipps had already

a move.

And he didn't know that since splitting up with him, he could never be part of my life again.

"Oh," he replied indifferently, probably more out of curiosity than concern.

"Doing okay," I responded, just as noncommittally.

Thinking I bought the food for Phipps, Conrad didn't press further.

In the ensuing silence, I noticed he looked thinner than before, less healthy.

"Goodbye!" After a prolonged silence, Conrad left me with those two words and walked away. Watching his retreating figure, I whispered, "Goodbye."

I carried the food back to Deborah's

hospital room but ran into two men in black as soon as I exited the elevator. They first looked at my face, then at the food in my hands.
