Dustin, fully aware of Ernest's true identity, still chose to let him go. It was clearly a test.

"What plans does Ernest have?" I asked.

I didn't really need Grant to tell me; I already knew. Ernest had been lying low, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. This time, he would definitely cooperate.

As for Dustin, he probably wanted to use this chance to eliminate Ernest completely. It was going to be a showdown between the two of them.

"He told me to tell you not to worry about him. He remembers everything he promised you," Grant conveyed the message, acting as the go-between.

Ernest didn't come himself, probably to avoid the emotional farewells and the worries that come with parting face-to-face.

Since I was his unresolved issue, I decided to let him focus on his mission. I nodded at Grant, "Alright, let him handle his business. I can't stay here forever either. It's safe, but so dull that I'm afraid it will drive me crazy." "You're thinking of going out?" Grant understood my hint right away.

"Yeah, the food here leaves much to be desired," I complained.

Grant chuckled, "Alright, I'll pass on your message. But whether he agrees to let you out is not up to me."

"Tell Ernest I can take care of myself," I insisted. Despite the risks, I was confident in my ability to protect myself.

After Grant left, I waited for the go-ahead to leave, but it never came. It seemed Ernest wasn't willing to let me take even the slightest risk. But I really needed to get out, and fortunately, I had Fanny. She came to see me.

"Go replace Shirley and see if she can arrange for someone to let me out. Then tell her I can help her replace her high school sweetheart," I asked Fanny to pass on the message.

With no phone to use and no one to talk to, my mind had been racing. I recalled Shirley using her daughter to set up a scheme.

If it was money she wanted, Lord Clark must have given her plenty over the years. So, she was probably using her daughter as leverage to exchange for her first love.

Now that she had taken such a drastic step, she must be out of patience. I figured I might as well give her a hand.

If my guess was correct, her first love was probably lingering around the Sapphire Lounge. Ernest could definitely track him down.

"Alright, I'll talk to her. But if something really happens to you out there, Ernest might just kill me," Fanny joked.

"He wouldn't dare. Yates wouldn't let him get away with it," I teased back.

Fanny's expression tightened, and I immediately sensed something was off. "What's wrong? Are you and Yates having problems?"

"No, he's just so busy all the time. I'd have to schedule an appointment to have a problem with him," Fanny said with a bitter laugh, masking her sadness.

I didn't know how to comfort her, so I tried to reassure her, "He's a big-shot professor. He's probably caught up in some research project. Once he achieves his goals, he have all the time in the world for

you."

"You don't need to comfort me," Fanny forced a smile, her attempt at humor tinged with sarcasm. "Remember what you said when Conrad was too busy for you?"

What had I said?

"If someone truly cares about you, no matter how busy they are, they'll replace the time to have a meal with you, to message you, to call you," Fanny reminded me, and it all came back had said those words when Conrad had been too preoccupied to even remember our anniversary.

Now, Fanny was feeling neglected by Yates.

It's hard to give advice when you've been through the same pain.

Having experienced that feeling, I had no right to preach to Fanny.

The melancholy topic weighed heavily on both of us, and she didn't want to talk anymore. "I've got to go. I'll deliver your message."

Fanny left, lost in thought, barely noticing her surroundings until a familiar voice interrupted her. "What are you doing here?"
