Chapter 28: The Whole Family Against Her

Melis POV

Chapter 28: The Whole Family Against Her

Although I had anticipated that Courteney wouldn't genuinely guide my child, seeing Aaron turn into this still made my heart ache for no reason.

I didn't want to reason with him; I stood up, ready to call for a doctor.

"You laid a hand on Aaron?"

"Melissa Helberg!"

The two voices echoed simultaneously in the room.

Elliott Kauffman had just entered and immediately saw me strike their son, Aaron, hard.

"Even if Aaron did something wrong, you shouldn't-have reacted this way! He's just a child; he doesn't understand anything," Courteney's voice trembled, her face a mask of disbelief. "Melissa, even the most ruthless person wouldn't hurt their own child! Even if you have some misunderstanding with us, you shouldn't bring harm to our son."

Elliott hurried to lift Aaron from the ground, his voice shaking with anger.

I pressed my lips together, worry etched on my face.

Anyone with a functioning mind could see that I was desperately trying to control my emotions. The trembling Mignon in my arms was on the verge of breaking down.

I raised Mignon's bloodied and swollen hand.

"Misunderstanding? Ha! Take a good

because you have your own child that you no longer care to discipline Aaron?"

your own child ook! Is this the wonderful son you've raised? Or is it

As the tension between the two of us escalated, Courteney stepped forward.

"Alright, can we set aside our personal grudges? Ultimately, this is just a misunderstanding."

Her lips curled into a faint, gentle smile.

"In the hallway, we unexpectedly ran into Melissa. Aaron was overjoyed and leapt into her arms. Little did we know, Melissa had important matters to attend to and inadvertently. overlooked Aaron's feelings.", Elliott shifted his gaze to Mignon in my arms, his expression noticeably displeased.

"It's her fault! Daddy, she doesn't want me anymore; she only holds other children."

Aaron clung to Elliott's leg, unable to contain his tears.

His heart-wrenching sobs stirred sympathy in anyone who witnessed the scene.

"Aaron couldn't wait to be with Melissa, and as soon as he walked in, he saw how tenderly she cared for that child, and that's when he started to feel upset."

Courteney's voice trailed off, as if it were truly my fault for forcing Aaron to act out this

way.

"Dear Melissa, regardless of our misunderstandings, for Aaron's sake, I beg you-he can't be without a mother. He's so pitiful. How can you seriously abandon him and ignore him for months on end?" As I listened to her words, I couldn't help but laugh out loud.

"Are you implying that I, as his mother, am too cruel? Wasn't it you who caused Elliott, Aaron, and me to be apart for several months?"

Every time I recalled the things Aaron had said and how he had called her "Mama," my heart ached.

My words prompted Elliott to involuntarily turn his gaze to Mignon's bedside card.

Mignon Agrigent, age 5.

That surname was it the same as the Dark Alpha's?

-

But he had never heard of Dark Alpha having children, let alone one that didn't appear to be in good health.

"Ha, Melissa Helberg! Who would have thought you possessed such talent!"

I looked at Elliott Kauffman in disbelief, sensing the chilling mockery laced in his biting. words.

"You divorced so decisively, even going so far as to ask me multiple times to release your mark. Is it because you found a new lover so quickly and are willing to care for someone else's bastard?"

His deep voice penetrated my ears like a thunderclap, nearly shattering the last remnants. of my sanity.

"This has nothing to do with you. Move aside."

"Now she's gravely ill, and it's a punishment for you, who so easily abandoned your husband and child! Melissa, even now, you still don't think you've done anything wrong? Where is Dark Alpha? Why isn't he here?" Faced with his accusations, I found it amusing.

Did he really think he could casually shift the blame for his own misdeeds onto me?

"No matter what, this has nothing to do with you. I need to take my daughter to the doctor. Please step aside, or I will call security."

"Given the circumstances, it seems that Dark Alpha isn't such a good man either. It's not worth it for him to make you give up on Aaron and me."

Elliott's gaze bore into me, his eyes cold yet tinged with a hint of lingering affection.

How could someone change so drastically in just a few months?

A shadow of gloom surfaced in my eyes.

They were the ones who had abandoned me first.

In the end, this family of three dared to blame me for being neglectful.

"Wicked woman! You're a wicked woman, only thinking of yourself! You don't want Daddy and Aaron!"

I paid no mind to Aaron's unfounded accusations.

The doctor had said that Mignon had a congenital immune system issue and needed to be admitted to the ICU immediately; delaying further was not an option. "Mommy isn't a bad woman; she's the best mommy in the world. No, no... don't you dare talk nonsense!"

Mignon forced herself to turn her head, her small face flushed red from rising body temperature,

Weakly leaning her entire body against me, she argued with Aaron in a small voice.

"Don't you have a mother of your own? Why are you trying to take mine?"

Aaron pouted in dissatisfaction, glaring at Mignon with jealousy.

Even in her illness, she didn't forget to defend me, and as I looked down at the little one in my arms, my heart ached even more.

"Miss, we've contacted Dr. Clinton. We should head over now."

The nurse was unaware of the current situation, but she could tell that the child was in poor condition, her face pale, and there was no time to waste. "Mommy, I'm hungry."

Mignon's simple four-word plea came out with exhaustion.

"Okay, Mignon, Mommy will make you Chicken Noodle Soup in a bit."

I glanced at the Kauffman father and son, my gaze dimming slightly, the bitter smile not quite reaching my eyes.

After just a few months, Elliott's distrust and Aaron's ruthlessness and stubbornness still left me deeply disappointed. 48.7%

As I prepared to leave the hospital room, my shirt was tugged at once more.

Aaron looked up at me with hopeful eyes.

"Mommy, I'm hungry too. Don't you want to make something for me to eat?"

Hearing those words jolted my memory.

I remembered when Aaron was unwell and couldn't eat or would stubbornly refuse food.

I would feel a surge of pity and go to great lengths to prepare something he liked, offering it to him with care..

But now, I got tired of him and wouldn't do that anymore.

I simply pulled his hand away and looked down at him with calm detachment.

"If you're hungry, go replace Aunt Courteney. I'm no longer your nanny; I've divorced your father, and I won't be cooking."

"Is this how you speak to a child? Is there nothing else you want to say to us?"

Elliott stared at me in disbelief, seemingly seeking some kind of explanation.

"What else would you, the Alpha from the meadow, want to hear?"

Wasn't he the one who hastily labeled Mignon as a bastard without knowing the facts?

Though my voice remained cool and gentle, the disdain and impatience on my face only intensified.

Courteney couldn't hold back any longer; she stood up, her pregnant belly prominent, and spoke to me earnestly. "Miss Helberg, you're being unreasonable. Aaron is still young; you can't take what he says to heart."
