Chapter 46: The Truth Behind the Problem

Elliott's POV

Chapter 46: The Truth Behind the Problem

As I was taking care of Aaron, Swan suddenly rushed over, clearly anxious.

"You'd better calm down; there's been too much happening lately. If we keep making a mess of things ourselves, the situation for the Pack will get worse."

Only now could I understand the difficulties Melissa faced. Aaron was so weak that he needed all-around care to grow up safely.

"Our people have discovered that the North has dispatched many envoys to several regions. We don't know what they're up to, but it's likely they're here to investigate us, which makes it hard not to feel anxious."

He paced back and forth in the room, and I shook my head helplessly, trying to reassure him.

"Alright! Ever since the Dark Alpha conquered us and took away our important people, our lives have been completely thrown into chaos. If he really wanted to launch a full-scale attack, he would have done so long ago; why wait until now? So we need to wait and see what he's planning."

I forced Swan to calm down before raising my question. "Are those guys professional military personnel?"

He nodded, then shook his head, clearly unsure.

"I really want to know what the Dark Alpha is up to! He's taken everything from me! My land, my people, and Phoebe! He must think I'm truly weak and easy to bully, or why else would he do these things? Now he probably doesn't even want to tolerate me anymore and aims to take over my entire Pack."

Swan's thoughts were very negative, making me worry about his mental state.

"Calm down; we can contact the Special Missions Bureau to make your days easier. If other Packs are willing to lend you a hand, you might feel better."

I patted his shoulder, but it seemed my words didn't reach him.

"Elliott, you don't understand! Things have gotten worse. The Dark Alpha has started demanding forced taxes from my Pack, and the amounts are extremely high! This is especially troubling for me."

I was incredulous, staring into his eyes as I asked, "What are you saying? What taxes? I don't understand."

Swan pulled out a document that indeed bore the Alpha's seal and signature.

"Are you... really required to pay these?"

This was the first time I had heard of a Pack needing to pay taxes to the North.

"This tax represents that our Pack has been dominated by the Dark Alpha... We're done! Everything is ruined; all regions will be under their control. I came to you today to tell you that I'm ready to fight back, and I hope you're willing to help me." I quickly took Swan back to his home, where I gathered more information.

"Don't be too anxious; you won't face this alone, trust me. Once I get more information from the Bureau, there will definitely be a way."

Was this his method of controlling each region?

My pressure suddenly increased significantly. If my Pack was also subjected to such oppression, could I really escape from his grasp?

Thinking of this, I sent a message to Jim. If I had to choose an ally, I'd prefer someone I could trust.

When I returned home, I sensed something strange in the atmosphere.

As I walked to the second floor, I was shocked to replace Courteney cleaning the room that belonged to Melissa and me.

"What the hell! Are you crazy? What the hell are you doing?!"

I had never been this angry before. Seeing Courteney freeze in her tracks did nothing to calm me down.

I charged in, throwing all her cleaning tools outside and then shoved her out the door to ensure some of Melissa's scent remained in the room.

She stood at the door, at a loss.

Seeing my

face turn red with rage made her unable to hold back her tears, and her whole body began to tremble.

"I just wanted to clean the room. Aaron can't live in a dirty place, so the villa needs to be aired out regularly."

I didn't care about her pathetic excuses; I didn't care about any reasons!

"I've told you before, don't go in there! Don't disturb my memories with Melissa. Why are you still doing this?"

With that, I slammed the door shut and locked it with a key.

"This will always be Melissa's home; this is her room! No one has the right to enter without my permission."

As I spoke, she cried even harder. "Stop joking around! Elliott, you know she has her own life now. We have to remove her from our lives and start our own new life."

Courteney shouted at me, but I couldn't hear her.

"If I don't know about her life, then ours can't go on." I leaned against the wall, feeling that every word I spoke was so pale and powerless.

"Are you crazy?! I hate you, I really hate you! How can you treat me like this, like I'm nothing? Ever since they took Melissa away, you've completely changed! You're unhappy every day, and everything revolves around your ex-wife and her child. You're getting further and further away from me! It's not my fault they took her away, and it's not my problem that we're starting a new fate."

In my eyes, Courteney had gone mad, and I couldn't suppress my anger any longer.

"But you used your

father's Alpha status to force me to marry you, to force me to accept made me you into my home! Back then, I had to betray Melissa because of you, and hurt my wife!"

you

I didn't know how those words had come out of my mouth, but once I said them, I felt a lot better.

"You're blaming me? The one who truly hurt Melissa is you! She would never say those things! If you really had the ability, you should have rejected me outright, instead of

you refuse getting intimate with me on the balcony. If you loved her enough, why didn't me? On the contrary, you wavered between us, while I respected my fate and had to force you to be affectionate with me. Throughout this process, you never rejected me." She forced me to look up, demanding that I accept her version of the truth.

"Everything is your fault! You made me forever full of hope, made me believe that you couldn't live without me! The main reason we can't be together is because you have a wife, and Melissa is the obstacle between us. Your actions and your feelings gave me hope to fight for us, so don't blame me because she left and you feel sad. All the mistakes are yours, Elliott Kauffman. I refuse to pay the price for your actions!" Every word she said was like a dagger, piercing my heart mercilessly.

I suddenly felt all my strength drain away because her words made me realize that it was all my fault.

Melissa was destined to leave me; she was free.

And from beginning to end, I had willingly accepted Courteney. This choice had utterly broke Melissa's heart.

Looking at Courteney's pregnant belly only deepened my

sadness.

"I came to your side because of fate, not to use pregnancy to trap you. Don't paint me as the villain; I haven't done anything except want you. I will never live in the shadow of any woman, and I hope you won't either. Perhaps I should go back to see my father, but I don't want him to worry about me! Elliott, this is my final warning: don't let anyone think I'm the one doing something wrong, or I will truly leave you."

Without looking back, Courteney left, leaving me alone. I felt so ashamed that I couldn't

lift my head because, as she said, I was indeed selfish, weak, and foolish.

I didn't go after her; I knew we both needed space to think things over.
