Not His Type Of Mate -
Chapter 122
Nora's
POV
I was sitting in my room when a maid came in and greeted me. "Madam, the food is ready. Will you come downstairs, or should we bring your food here?" The maid questioned, and I fell into deep thought for a while. "Where is Lord Maddison?" I asked as I stared at the maid. "He's downstairs," she replied, and I nodded.
"You can leave. I will join him downstairs to eat," I said to the maid, who immediately nodded and went out. Looking at her, it seemed she knew about the issue between Maddison and me, and I knew the rest of the workers would have known too.
I stood up from the bed and walked toward the door. I was tired; I felt like sleeping. I would have requested for my food to be brought to my room, but I wanted to see Maddison. I had been missing him for hours already and wished to see him. Eating with him was the only opportunity I had, and I wasn't ready to miss it.
I walked down the stairs, dragging my weary legs with a little frown on my face. But I revealed a soft smile the moment I saw Maddison sitting at the dining table. We were used to eating together, and he would always wait for me whenever I wasn't there. I thought he would change because we were fighting, but seeing him waiting for me, I was glad he hadn't changed. "You're here?" I asked, although I had already seen him, just to initiate a conversation. But he only nodded before picking up his cutlery.
I sat in front of him with a smile on my face, and we started eating. "Maddison, what are your plans for the day? I haven't seen you the whole day. Where have you been?" I tried to converse with him as if everything was normal, as that was what I truly wanted. I kept glancing at him now and then to see his face, which I had missed so much. But my heart broke when I noticed that he wasn't looking at me at all.
"Continue initiating the conversation; he might answer you. Who knows, you might sort out the issue with him and continue your marriage!" Lolita advised me, and I agreed. Solving the problem between us was my priority, and I was going to do that if I had the chance. "Yes, Maddison, do you know what a reader said to me today after reading my last book?" I asked him, and he glanced at me once before focusing on his food again. "The reader said it was the best book they had ever read. They advised me to continue updating and put more twists because they just can't get enough of it." I bragged excitedly as I remembered the review again. I had seen the review earlier in the day when I decided to check the book I was writing, and it made me smile. But I wasn't very excited because I felt empty. However, talking to Maddison about it at the moment made me excited, and I kept gazing at him as I shared the news.
Maddison looked at me and grunted. He opened his mouth to talk but closed it back and waved to me. "We are eating, Nora," he mumbled gently, and my heart broke into pieces. I expected him to at least be happy for me and say something nice, although we were fighting. But his cold, simple words hit me hard, and my eyes reddened. "Why are you doing this, Maddison? Don't you think you're being too harsh?" I asked as I glared at him. I wanted to continue talking when something came to my mind, and I sighed. "If you are not careful, you will lose them both." I remembered what a seer said to me some time ago, and my heart shook. Fear gripped me, and I shivered.
Maddison... Will I lose him for real? The thought of losing him suffocated me and made it hard for me to breathe. Knowing I had lost my appetite, I dropped the cutlery and stood up. "I'm... I'm leaving," I stuttered, forcing myself to form a word from my messed-up mind. But I received no reply as I turned to leave.
I returned to my room, dragging my feet with a pained heart, and entered my room. I locked the door and rested against it. What do I do? I closed my eyes, and a tear rolled down my face. "Will you continue this way, Nora? Will you continue being sad all the time like this?" Lolita asked me, and my last thread of hope snapped and broke into pieces as I covered my mouth and sobbed bitterly.
I covered my mouth and muffled my tears, but it only made my heart ache more. I cried and cried, I cried so much that I felt like I was going to die. "Stop, Nora. You can't keep crying like this. You have to stay strong for yourself and the baby. Remember, without the baby, there will be nothing attaching you to Maddison, and you might finally lose him forever," Lolita advised me. But I couldn't stop myself from crying. I wanted to protect my baby and stop crying, but it was difficult.
After several minutes, I was finally able to comfort myself, and I wiped my tears. I connected to Maxwell through the mind link. "I'm tired, Maxwell. I'm so tired. I feel like I'm losing everything... I don't know what to do anymore," I lamented as fresh tears escaped my eyes. "Maddison hasn't returned to you yet? I thought you said you would try your best to make him forgive you," Maxwell asked with a worried-filled voice, and I let out a deep breath.
I had explained everything to Maxwell from the start, and he had been the only one encouraging me ever since. He even asked me to make sure not to let him divorce me because the whole issue was my fault, and Maddison loved me so much.
"I've tried my best. I apologized, explained, initiated conversations, and did everything else I could do. But nothing was working. I'm tired," I lamented further. "Don't worry, Nora. Everything will be fine. You just have to calm down and continue staying strong like you are doing right now," Maxwell motivated me once again, and I nodded. I glanced around the room as I wiped my tears and walked away from the door. "I know what to do now. I will go and write a little bit to clear my mind of him. Maybe when I'm done with the chapter, I might replace a solution to my problem too," I told Maxwell, and he agreed as I ended the mind link. I walked over to my table and opened my laptop. I would write, write, and write until I forgot about him.
I had only written a few words when I heard a knock on the door, and I frowned. It couldn't be Maddison because he never stepped into the room since we had a misunderstanding, and he wouldn't knock on the door before coming in either. I stood up from my seat but sat back and cleared my throat. "Come in," I said, and the next minute, the door opened, and a man in a black suit came in.
He walked towards me and bowed. "I'm Lord Maddison's lawyer," he introduced himself, and I nodded. Wait, what? A lawyer? What was a lawyer doing in our house?
My heart started racing against my chest, and fear gripped my soul as I watched the lawyer raise his head. I wanted to greet him back, introduce myself, and ask him to take a seat, but I was speechless. I couldn't utter a word and could only continue staring at him blankly. "I'm here to give you this paper on behalf of Lord Maddison," the lawyer added, and my heart sank. I looked at the paper he was handing over to me, and my hand started trembling as I received it from him. I hadn't even checked it, yet I already knew what was inside.
"A divorce agreement," I mumbled out loud, and the lawyer nodded. A tear trickled down my face, but I quickly wiped it off and looked at the lawyer. "Okay," I replied as I started reading through the divorce paper until my eyes caught the space for signing, and I realized he hadn't signed his own yet. For a moment, I was hopeful as I looked at the lawyer. "He hasn't signed yet?" I asked him, and he nodded. "Yes, I only printed that out today, and he told me he would sign today too," the lawyer explained, dashing my hope again.
Anger surged through me. It felt like I had been a fool all along for thinking things could still work out between Maddison and me when it was already obvious he was over me. He didn't even think twice or wait for me to try solving the situation before placing a divorce paper in front of me. "I will get back to you," I said to the lawyer, who nodded, bowed, and left the room.
I stared at the paper a bit longer and groaned before standing up. I walked to my closet and packed some of my things into a bag. Then, I left the room.
"Where is Lord Maddison?" I asked one of the guards I met downstairs.
"He's out, Madam. He left not too long ago with the lawyer," he replied, and I sighed. I looked at the divorce paper, which I had already returned to the envelope, and handed it to the guard. "Give it to him when he returns," I said, and left the house. However, one of the guards ran after me, asking to give me a ride to where I was heading, but I shook my head and left the mansion.
