Chapter 282

He stared deep into her eyes. “Does it matter if 1 believe y

you or not?”

She was stunned, and then she smiled to herself. Yeah, whether he believed her or not had nothing to do with her. Why was she so nervous when he looked at her just now?

“I’m going back to my room,” said Serenity. She tried to walk past Jackson to get to the stairs.

But she only managed to take two steps before he grabbed her arm. The next moment, she was pulled into his embrace.

“I believe that you’re innocent.” He bent down and said next to her ear, “But do you really think you can replace out anything investigating on your own like this? Three years have already passed. Have you ever thought that maybe the truth you wanted to uncover never existed in the first place?

Serenity’s bright almond–shaped eyes looked hack at Jackson. She smiled gently and said, “Rich and powerful people like you think that I can’t possibly overturn the case with my own power, but a common folk like me still believes that one day, I can prove my innocence,”

Her smile irritated his eyes and stung his heart. After a while, he said, “What if I’m willing to help you? What If… I can help you uncover the truth you want?”

She stared at him blankly, not understanding why he had suddenly changed his attitude.

“What if I say that, if you’re willing to stay by my side and keep me company, I can help you uncover the truth? Would you say yes?” he asked, his warm breath almost enveloping her.

Her heart started beating really fast. She could feel it in her throat.

She knew that all she needed to do was say yes and she would be able to clear her name and stand before society as an innocent

woman once more.

But she would be trading for this “innocence” using her freedom and perhaps even her body. Was that really what she wanted?

She was not a little girl anymore. She could more or less guess what would happen if she said yes.

Her mother would not want to see her obtain one land of innocence at the cost of another.

“I’ll replace out the truth myself,” said Serenity. She rejected Jackson’s offer.

“Are you sure?” he asked in a whisper. Then, he slowly straightened up. His seductive eyes turned gloomy. “You can come to me whenever you change your mind.”

He let go of her arm.

Serenity bit her lip softly and walked to the stairs.

Jackson’s eyes stared at Serenity’s back until her figure disappeared from his vision. He then sat back down on the sofa and took out the photo of Serenity in a floral dress from his pocket again.

“Is it you?” he asked softly, as if his question could reach the little girl in the plioto across the boundaries of time and space.

The only response he pot was the silence in the air around him.

In his mind, the ploto overlapped with a painting that he had seen before. The little girl in the painting looked very similar to the little girl in the photo. She was also wearing a similar floral dress.

Was it a coincidence? Jackson’s eyes regained focus. Or was she really… the little girl in the painting?

If she was, then…
