"I think I did a good job," Victor tells us, crossing his arms and looking down at Alvin. "I think you're going to love it." "Okay," Alvin moans, his shoulders slumped. "Let's see it."

"This is so unfair!" Victor says, laughing and crossing to the desk he's been using to conduct all of his business. "You've had six birthdays convince them that you're the best at gifts, Evelyln, and I've had none! And still, they're biased!" "It's not a bias if it's right," I say, shrugging and following my mate. "Then it's just a fact."

The boys come over with us to the desk as Victor pulls out a folder with a ribbon tied around it. Alvin's shoulders slump even further when he sees it. lan cackles with glee.

"What?" Victor asks, looking between his son and the folder. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing," I say, giving him a little smirk. "Just, nothing says 7-year-old birthday bonanza like a manila folder."

"I love it, dad," Alvin says, sighing and putting his hands out limply to accept the gift. "Thank you so much."

"Okay, so my wrapping is sub-par," Victor says, rolling his eyes a little. "But it's what inside that counts."

"Let's all look," I say, sitting down at the kitchen table and pulling Alvin into my lap, eagerly looking over his shoulder as his father ceremoniously hands him the folder. lan comes to our side, looking on as well as Victor crosses his arms, smirking at us. Slowly, Alvin unties the ribbon and opens the folder, peering in at a series of pictures.

"What..." he asks, sorting through him. I gasp when I figure it out, my eyes shining as I look up at my mate, a big smile on my face. "What is this?" Alvin asks.

"It's an observatory," Victor replies, smug. "I'm having it built for you in the new house, kid."

"For..." Alvin says, stuttering a little in his shock, "for our telescope?"

"A whole new telescope," Victor says, putting his hands flat on the table and grinning at his son. "A really big, fancy one. You'll be able to see all sorts of stuff - Jupiter, Pluto. You name it, kid."

Alvin's lower lip begins to tremble as he stares at his father, and then back down at the plans and the photographs, and then he drops everything and jumps from his seat, dashing to his dad and wrapping his arms around Victor's waist, totally overwhelmed. "Thank you, papa," Alvin's muffled voice says from somewhere in Victor's shirt. "I love it."

"I love you, kid," Victor says fondly, stroking his hair and smiling down at him. "Happy birthday." They stay like that for a moment before Victor slowly turns his gaze to me, smug. I smile at him, truly touched that he got his son such an amazing gift. I love it, and I particularly love how much Alvin loves it.

But I can't stop the slow smile that pulls at the corner of my own mouth.

Victor narrows his eyes at me when he sees it. What, he says, giving me a little pulse of curiosity in my mind a long with the word. What's that little smile for?

Because, I think back to him, my smile deepening. I still won.

No way, he replies, his eyes narrowing. This was the gift to end all gifts -

But I just give a little shrug as lan pulls at my sleeve, leaning close to me to whisper because he doesn't want to interrupt his brother's special moment. "Mama," he asks. "Can we do mine now?"

"Yes, baby," I whisper back, putting an arm around him as I stand up. "Let's go."

"Go?" Victor asks, Alvin turning as well. "Go where?"

"To the present," I say, as if it's obvious. Then, still wearing my secret smile, I walk with lan out the back door. I hear Victor and Alvin quickly follow behind, Archie at their heels.

We walk mostly in silence across the back yard and into the woods, towards the construction of the new house.

"Evelyn," Victor asks as we head around the house, to the space out back that he's planning to use to train some of his Beta forces. "Where are we going?"

I don't say anything, just shoot a little grin over my shoulder. I can feel lan getting palpably more excited as we go, his walk turning into short little skips, his breath getting shorter as we approach a big garage towards the back of the property. Standing at the door is Beta Stephen, a big smile on his face as well. "Everything ready, Step hen?" I ask, excited myself now.

"Yes, ma'am," he says, looking between all of us.

"Evelyn," Victor says, frowning as he comes to stand next to me, his hands on Alvin's shoulders in front of me. "What did you do?"

"I just got my son a gift," I say, smiling at him innocently. Then, I nod to Stephen, giving him the go-ahead to press the button on the garage door next to him.

Slowly, the garage door begins to lift, revealing the present behind it. Ian and Alvin, closer to the ground, gasp when it comes into sight.

"What," Victor asks, worried, "what is it?" And then he bends down so that he can see it as well.

I don't do anything, just stand smiling as the door pulls up and lan shrieks with joy, dashing forward towards the brand-new helicopter sitting there, a big red bow on its front.

"Ohhhh my god, Evelyn," Victor groans as the present comes fully into view. "oh my god, what did you do?"

"What," I say, laughing and grinning up at him as lan and Alvin disappear into the garage. "It's just a little helicopter," I say, holding up my thumb and forefinger pinched closed together to demonstrate the smallness of the gift. "For a little boy!"

"He can't even fly it!" Victor gasps, smacking a hand to his forehead in disbelief as he stares at the present. "He can't get his pilots license for...nine or ten more years!"

"That's all right," I say, with a shrug. "He can climb on it for now."

Victor gapes at me, appalled at the idea that his son would use a complicated machine as a piece of playground equipment, but I gesture towards the garage to show that the boys are doing precisely that. Worried, Victor takes a step forward to stop them, but I laugh and hold him back. "Let them!" I say. "I talked to the manufacturer - they can't turn it on or get chopped up or anything."

"Evelyn," Victor says, looking down at me, not mad but not understanding. "What were you thinking?"

"I was thinking," I say, moving closer to him to wrap my arms around his waist, "that my little boy would like nothing more in this world than a helicopter. And that you could take him flying in it, and that would make his little heart soar with happiness, and give him a set of memories that he'll never forget."

Victor's eyes soften at this idea and he presses a finger beneath my chin, shaking his head at me. "But I already have helicopters. I could take him up in one of those."

"Yes," I say, nodding with understanding. "But this one is his. Trust me, Victor," I say, shrugging. "It's awesome."

"Mom!" lan shrieks, running back over to us and throwing himself against me so hard that I'd have fallen over if Victor weren't there to bolster me. "It's awesome!"

I smile up at Victor as I hug my boy, my point proven.

Alvin comes running after, laughing. "It's so cool! It's blue!" Alvin runs up to his father, taking his hand, giving him a big smile. "Sorry, dad," he says, patting Victor's hand in a conciliatory way.

"What!?" Victor gasps. "I thought you loved your present!"

"I do," Alvin says, his eye wide. "It is perfect for me. I love it! But that," he says, turning to look back at the helicopter. "For lan? That's the best present he may get in his entire life."

"And best thing is," I say, looking around at the three of them, "that next year, we switch, and daddy picks out lan's present. So, it's his job to top it!"

Victor groans, realizing that I'm right and I laugh, waving to Stephen and turning my family back towards our cottage. "Shall we go to bed? I'm looking forward to my sleep. The sleep of victory is always best."

lan laughs, skipping ahead with his brother and Archie back to the cottage, talking eagerly about all the places they can fly now. As we walk, Victor swats my a*s with his palm, promising revenge. I grin up at him and bite my lip, daring him to do his worst. He snaps his teeth at me playfully, promising that he will as soon as he gets me upstairs.
